We examine the relationship between public sector efficiency and government spending, to assess public resource management across the 27 European Union countries. Specifically, we analyze the growth of public expenditure in relation to outcomes across various public sector performance (PSP) indicators. We compute government spending efficiency using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to subsequently assess the relationship between efficiency and the growth rate of public expenditure. Our findings suggest that higher efficiency can be achieved without proportionally increasing public spending, both in total expenditure and in specific areas such as social protection, economic affairs, education, healthcare, and public services. Indeed, with overall output efficiency scores between 0.77 and 0.87, with the same level of inputs, output could increase around 13%-23%. Additionally, public spending tends to rise during recessions, while it decreases with higher levels of human capital and redistribution indicators. Finally, more efficient countries tend to coalesce around Austria, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Hungary, Poland, and Sweden.

This study investigates the impact of social pension insurance on the efficiency of household financial portfolios, utilizing data from the 2019 wave of the China Household Finance Survey. Our findings indicate that social pension insurance significantly enhances the efficiency of household financial portfolios, partly through the channels of risk attitude and precautionary savings.

We implement the Rawlsian thought experiment of a veil of ignorance in the laboratory which introduces risk and possibly social preferences. We find that both men and women react to the risk introduced by the veil of ignorance. Only the women additionally exhibit social preferences that reflect an increased concern for equality. Our results for women imply that maximin preferences can also be derived from a combination of some, not necessarily infinite risk aversion and social preferences. This result contrasts the Utilitarians' claim that maximin preferences necessarily represent preferences with infinite risk aversion.

There is a growing body of evidence that interest rate spreads in Africa are higher for big ba nks compared to small banks. One concern is that big banks might be using their market power to charge higher lending rates as they become larger, more efficient, and unchallenged. In contra st, several studies found that when bank size increases beyond certain thresholds, diseconomies of scale are introduced that lead to inefficiency. In that case, we also would expect to see widened interest margins. This study examines the connection between bank size and efficiency to understand whether that relationship is influenced by exploitation of market power or economies of scale. Using a panel of 162 African banks for 2001 − 2011, we analyzed the empirical dat a using instrumental variables and fixed effects regressions, with overlapping and non-overlapping thresholds for bank size. We found two key results. First, bank size increases bank interest rate margins with an inverted U-shaped nexus. Second, market power and economies of scale do not increase or decrease the interest rate margins significantly. The main policy implication is that interest rate margins cannot be elucidated by either market power or economies of scale. Other implications are discussed.

The objective of the paper is to review the use of big data analytics (BDA) in banks and non-banks financial institutions (BNBFI) in Bangladesh. Since the advent of information technology (IT), data collection for BNBFI becomes easy through various channels. As BNBFI conduct business through information, data plays essential role to take an accurate decision. Besides, literature suggests use of big data helps BNBFI to reduce customer churn rate, enhance loyalty, manage risk and increase revenue. BNBFI are leveraging big data to transform their processes, their organizations and soon, the entire industry. For this, the study attempts to explore the effect of BDA on the efficiency of BNBFI in Bangladesh using an explorative study. Since no study has been conducted until now, collection of data becomes difficult. However, data has been collected from extensive literature review, company websites, annual reports and formal conversation with the bank employees. The primary observations suggests, some BNBFIs use data analytics regarding customer through ATM transactions, debit and credit card use, online banking and generate the data from Internet and computer that has better performance than the banks which do not use it. But the performance, however, is not identified in which specific functions BNBFI can emphasize the most to promote efficiency and growth. Besides, the observation is preliminary in nature and needs further study to provide recommendation.

The main subject of theoretical-empirical study presented in this paper is economic efficiency of companies listed on the Polish and German capital market1 . The discussed research problem was investigated in the form of a comparative analysis and realized in two parts. The discussion presented in the first part depicts mainly theoretical reflections on the essence and assessment measures of companies' economic efficiency. The second part presents the results of a comparative empirical research on economic efficiency of the companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and included in the WIG30 index as well as the companies listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, which belong to the DAX index. The research period comprises years between 2004-2013. A comparative analysis of economic efficiency of the companies was conducted using a traditional ratio analysis and the nonparametric DEA method. The results of the empirical research confirm that German companies achieved significantly higher values of basic economic categories in the analysed decade, financial results in particular; however, their generated profits did not reflect in higher values of profitability ratios. Polish companies performed much better as they also showed higher efficiency from the DEA's point of view.
