The creative economy is playing a more and more important role in regional development to generate income and jobs opportunity. At the centre of creative economy, many evidences show that the creative industries are the most dynamic emerging sectors. In many countries, especially in developed countries, the growth rate of creative industries is more than that of GDP and other industries. In this paper, we examined how is the relationship between the ratio of creative industries' value added to GDP and GDP per capital and if the growth rate of creative industries is more than that of secondary industry through the empirical analysis of Chinese 23 regions data. The results show that strong and significant correlations can be found between the ratio of creative industries' value added and the GDP per capital. There is no evidence to show that growth rate of creative industries is deferent that of secondary industry for all the regions. But when we divide the samples as two groups, there is weak evidence to infer that the growth rate of creative industries is more than that of secondary industry for higher GDP per capital regions; on the contrary, there is overwhelming evidence to infer that the growth rate of secondary industry is more than that of creative industries for lower GDP per capital regions.

A large part of the recent research and theoretical debate in economic geography underlines the central role of networks and relational perspectives. Although networks and their social dimension are recognised as central to the regional economic development, often the focus of research is in the economy transaction and supply-chain arguments. In particular, in the context of creativity and cultural industries, there has been a growing interest in the way the social and cultural dimensions are intertwined with the sites of exchange and consumptions but also the value of productions systems and supply-chains. From the economic geography framework, we moved on to social network analysis, as a new approach able to put together actors and institutions and to present all possible relationships and connecting structures, while focusing on the interconnection between public, private and not for profit sectors. The paper presents an empirical case study of the North-East region of England highlighting the importance of networks in the regional cultural economy. It draws on the data collected through social network analysis questionnaires and qualitative interviews to make the case for a better understanding of support, knowledge exchange and sociality. Social network analysis is used to show and highlight the role of the public sector and not for profit sector in the cultural economy but also the role of formal and informal network structure which supports the sector. Alongside, the SNA data qualitative interviews are used to better understand the issue surrounding the networks. The dynamics emerging from the social network analysis needs to be better understood and put into context. In particular, it addresses some of the dimensions emerging from the networks mapping: What is the role networks and what are they importance assets and impacts? In particular how relevant is the formal and informal dimension of them? Which role do networks play in terms of support and knowledge infrastructure? What is the role of the public sector in this networks and in this interaction? The conclusions drawn helps to better understand what role the interconnection between private, public and not for profit plays in the creative economy.

Do creative industries have positive spillovers for the local economy in middle-income countries, for instance by attracting creative workers who benefit entrepreneurs and workers in other industries? Creative industries are considered highly innovative and productive and several studies in high-income countries have revealed such spillovers. However, the institutional and economic settings in middle-income countries may not be as conducive to them. Creative industries represented between 2.7 and 3.3 percent of Colombian employment in 2008 and 2017. Using granular employment data, we study their agglomeration patterns between 2008 and 2017. We find agglomeration in the largest cities (Bogota, Medellın, and Cartagena) and in a few smaller cities. Using methodologies from prior studies yields a positive relationship between creative industry agglomeration and employment in non-creative services industries. However, after controlling for endogeneity using a shift-share instrumental variable approach, we find, contrary to analyses of high-income countries, no significant impact of an increase of creative industries employment on employment growth in other industries.

This paper considers the impact of a major public sector relocation: the British Broadcasting Corporation's partial move from London to Salford, Greater Manchester starting in 2011. We identify effects of the move using synthetic control methods applied to plant-level data at Local Authority and Travel to Work Area level. Each BBC job creates on average 0.33 additional jobs in the creative industries, rising to 0.55 additional jobs by 2017, and the relocation had an impact on sectoral and firm composition. We find no significant effect on total employment but a small positive effect on Local Authority average wages.

Abstract: "Like many new products, newly released creative goods such as books, music records and movies are sometimes 'surprise' hits but often flops. Experimental and empirical research suggests that it is hard to predict the demand for a new creative good, and therefore its success, even for industry experts. Rules of thumb on the quantitative properties of demand uncertainty exist for various creative industries - including a rule by Denis Diderot (1763) according to which one out of ten published books is a commercial success. Yet, representative evidence on any industry's new-product success rate is scarce. This paper studies new-product success in a random sample of novels. Its empirical strategy to identify success - a simple characterization of author-publisher bargaining combined with a parsimonious model of new-product diffusion - is based on the common observation that word-of-mouth is a crucial success factor in creative industries. Parametric and semi-parametric estimation resu

The concept of Creative Economy and its establishment as a discipline of study gained relevance from the 2000s. Creative Economy is the set of economic activities that depend on the symbolic content - being creativity the more significant factor for the production of goods and services. The Creative Economy is closely related to economic, cultural and social factors that interact with technology and intellectual property. Thus, this paper presents different concepts and ways to measure the Creative Economy around the world, and then present a measurement of the Creative Economy in Brazil, both the formal and the informal. It is estimated that the wages Creative Economy represents between 1.2% and 2% of the Brazilian GDP and approximately 2% of the labor workforce and 2.5% of formal wages. Moreover, workers in the Creative Economy earn more and are more educated than average.

Using high-quality administrative microdata spanning 2011-2013, this paper develops new routines to compare creative economies using the creative trident framework, and applies them to the UK and US national and regional contexts. We find the UK creative economy is larger in workforce shares, and grows faster over the study period; the US' is absolutely larger, and is distributed more evenly across industries. Regional results are shaped by deeper differences in national urban systems. The paper highlights possibilities for widely varying national configurations of creative economies, considers potential mechanisms driving differentiation, and reflects on the usefulness of the creative trident approach.

The business performance of firms in the creative high-tech sector shows much variation. This paper examines whether the geographical location of such business firms influences the performance of these firms. The overarching analysis framework of this paper emerges from the recently developed Strategic Performance Management (SPM) concept for individual firms, which in the present study is extended with spatial meso-attributes related to the location of these firms. SPM aims to improve the firms' competitive performance through the application of strict internal management principles. Our study thus adopts a micro-business perspective on the organizational determinants of a firm's economic performance and its links with distinct spatial entrepreneurship conditions and general economic moderator variables. The present study focuses on both large and small and medium-sized (SME) firms, mainly operating in the creative high-tech sector in the Netherlands. The research methodology uses stepwise the following analytical tools: multivariate analysis of an extensive micro- and meso-data set on the internal performance of firms and regional covariates; Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and its recent extension to super-efficient DEA for mapping out in a comparative way the achievements of both regions and firms; a GIS-oriented statistical analysis to identify geographically-discriminating factors in the firms' performance; and the design and estimation of a Structural Equations Model (SEM) for assessing the performance of the firms concerned (using what is called the "flying disc" model). Our results show significant differences in the performance of large vis-à-vis SME firms that have adopted SPM, while their geographical position in the country, in general, also plays a significant role.

This paper aims to investigate whether the spatial pattern of creative industries in the Netherlands has a relationship with the presence of cultural heritage or, in a more general sense, cultural capital. It first shows how the creative sector developed between 1994 - 2009 in relation to other Dutch sectors. Additionally, it analyses the urban dimension of the creative industry by focussing on the four large urban agglomerations in the Netherlands. And finally, it addresses the question whether a relationship exists between the share of the creative industry and the stock of cultural heritage at the level of municipalities. The paper concludes that local cultural heritage provides a statistically significant contribution to the presence of the creative industry at a municipality level.
