    Erzählen im Gespräch ist ein ubiquitäres Kommunikationsphänomen. Die Spannbreite der Geschichten, die wir erzählen, ist groß: Wir erzählen von komischen Ereignissen, traurigen Erlebnissen, zwischenmenschlichen Verwerfungen oder aufregenden Urlaubsreisen. So groß die Spannbreite dieser Geschichten ist, so unterschiedlich sind auch die Funktionen des Erzählens. Erzählen kann eine kommunikative, eine soziale, eine psychologische, aber auch eine rhetorische Funktion haben: In Verhandlungen bringen wir Geschichten ein, um Evidenz für unsere Argumente zu schaffen. In Vorstellungsgesprächen präsentieren wir wohlkonstruierte Narrative, um ein passendes Image für uns zu beanspruchen. Im Alltag erzählen wir strategisch, um Gespräche zu initiieren, um Freunde positiv zu stimmen oder um Beziehungen aufzubauen. Insofern verwundert es, dass die Gesprächsrhetorik das Erzählen als rhetorisches Phänomen noch nicht in den Blick genommen hat. Dieses Buch geht daher der grundlegenden Frage nach, wie die Rhetorizität des Erzählens in Gesprächen systematisch beschrieben werden kann. Ansätze aus Gesprächsforschung, Sozialpsychologie und moderner Rhetoriktheorie werden hier erstmals zu einem detaillierten und umfassenden praktikablen Analysemodell für das Erzählen im Gespräch zusammengeführt. The nascent field of conversational rhetoric has not yet examined narration as a rhetorical and persuasive phenomenon. This book thus pursues the fundamental question of how to systematically describe the rhetoricity of narration in conversations. By developing a systematics of rhetorical analysis models, it attempts to combine conversation analysis, social psychology, and modern rhetoric theory.

    What can oral poetic traditions teach us about language and the human mind? Oral Poetics has produced insights relevant not only for the study of traditional poetry, but also for our general understanding of language and cognition: formulaic style as a product of rehearsed improvisation, the thematic structuring of traditional narratives, or the poetic use of features from everyday speech, among many others. The cognitive sciences have developed frameworks that are crucial for research on oral poetics, such as construction grammar or conversation analysis. The key for connecting the two disciplines is their common focus on usage and performance. This collection of papers explores how some of the latest research on language and cognition can contribute to advances in oral studies. At the same time, it shows how research on verbal art in its natural, oral medium can lead to new insights in semantics, pragmatics, or multimodal communication. The ultimate goal is to pave the way towards a Cognitive Oral Poetics, a new interdisciplinary field for the study or oral poetry as a window to the mind

    What can oral poetic traditions teach us about language and the human mind? Oral Poetics has produced insights relevant not only for the study of traditional poetry, but also for our general understanding of language and cognition: formulaic style as a product of rehearsed improvisation, the thematic structuring of traditional narratives, or the poetic use of features from everyday speech, among many others. The cognitive sciences have developed frameworks that are crucial for research on oral poetics, such as construction grammar or conversation analysis. The key for connecting the two disciplines is their common focus on usage and performance. This collection of papers explores how some of the latest research on language and cognition can contribute to advances in oral studies. At the same time, it shows how research on verbal art in its natural, oral medium can lead to new insights in semantics, pragmatics, or multimodal communication. The ultimate goal is to pave the way towards a Cognitive Oral Poetics, a new interdisciplinary field for the study or oral poetry as a window to the mind
