    George Orwell was one of the most significant literary figures on the left in the twentieth century. While titles such as 1984, Animal Farm and Homage to Catalonia are still rightly regarded as modern classics, his own politics are less well understood.

     

    Hope Lies in the Proles offers a sympathetic yet critical account of Orwell's political thinking and its continued significance today. John Newsinger explores various aspects of Orwell's politics, detailing Orwell's attempts to change working-class consciousness, considering whether his attitude towards the working class was romantic, realistic or patronising - or all three at different times. He also asks whether Orwell's anti-fascism was eclipsed by his criticism of the Soviet Union, and explores his ambivalent relationship with the Labour Party. Newsinger also breaks important new ground regarding Orwell's shifting views on the USA, and his relationship with the progressive Left and feminism.

    Abstract: Es ist ruhig geworden um die politische Erwachsenenbildung in Deutschland. Eine Praxis der Erwachsenenbildung, die sich beinahe vollständig in einer Weitqualifikation zur besseren Verwertbarkeit auf dem Arbeitsmarkt erschöpft, kann den drängenden Problemen unserer Zeit nicht gerecht werden. Viel eher werden durch Faktoren wie die doppelte Selektivität Strukturen der gesellschaftlichen Ungleichheit aufrechterhalten, worin ein vollständiger Bruch mit den Wurzeln der politischen Erwachsenenbildung als Grundpfeiler zur Demokratisierung der Gesellschaft gesehen werden kann. In diesem Beitrag möchte der Autor nicht nur aufzeigen, dass dieser Zustand aus der Perspektive einer postkolonialen Kritik nicht haltbar ist, sondern darüber hinaus ein Zusammendenken von postkolonialer Theorie und einer Disziplin anregen, die in der Tradition der Arbeiterbewegung und -bildung steht. Während die politische Erwachsenenbildung in Deutschland durch die zunehmende Etablierung postkolonialer ... Abstract: It got quiet around the political adult education in Germany. A praxis of adult education which almost completely limits itself in qualification for a better usability for the labor market cannot live up to the urgent challenges of our time. Factors like 'double selectivity' much rather keep up structures of social inequality, which can be seen as a complete violation of the roots of political adult education as a foundation of the democratization of our society. In this article, the author doesn't only want to highlight that this situation is not acceptable seen from the perspective of a postcolonial criticism. He also wants to encourage a consolidation of postcolonial theory and a discipline that is rooted in the tradition of the labor movement. While the political adult education in Germany could strengthen again by establishing postcolonial theory, such a strengthening could be a valuable medium to dissolve postcolonial structures of power.
