A Sudden Frenzy explores the development and impact of these Renaissance practices of improvisation and oral poetry. James K. Coleman shows how the confluence of humanist culture and the art of oral poetry resulted in an extraordinary turn toward improvisation and spontaneity that profoundly influenced poetry, music, and politics. By examining the culture of improvisation, this book reveals the ways in which Renaissance thinkers transcended cultural dichotomies, both in theory and in practice.     Ausgehend von der Musica poetica Joachim Burmeisters werden in dieser Arbeit musikalisch-rhetorische Figuren als verbreitetes Phänomen schon des 16. Jahrhunderts untersucht. Dabei läßt sich ein Bogen schlagen von der frankoflämischen Schule über die beiden Gabrieli in Venedig bis hin zu deren Schülern, zu Schütz und schließlich bis zu Monteverdi. In dieser Epoche und bei diesen Komponisten werden Grundzüge, Figuren-«Vorläufer», Tendenzen, Ausdifferenzierungen und Entwicklungen aufgezeigt. Unter Einbeziehung zeitgenössischer theoretischer Traktate, die immer mehr Regeln zur Textvertonung bieten, wird verdeutlicht, daß die Grundgedanken der Burmeisterschen Lehre längst nicht nur in der Praxis verankert waren. Dabei bleibt selbstverständlich die Nähe von Seconda pratica und musikalisch-rhetorischen Figuren nicht unberücksichtigt, ebenso wie der Affektausdruck in der Instrumentalmusik
