    The popularity of the work of Valerius Maximus during the Middle Ages and Renaissance was due to its value as a source of moral exhortation and guidance: the work was as relevant to the readers of those times as it had been to Valerius' contemporaries in the first century AD. Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen demonstrates that the purpose of Valerius' work was to promote a system of morality based upon historical precedent that was both traditional and authoritative to the educated classes for whom he wrote. Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen offers a re-definition of the purpose of Valerius' work and totally new conclusions about its predecessors, form and audience. The book is not confined to an examination of Valerius' work in isolation, but also examines earlier forms of exemplary literature, questions of how Roman literature was communicated to its audience, and presents an entirely new theory on the identity of Valerius Maximus the author.

    Dans la seconde moitié du XVe siècle, de nombreux textes latins furent traduits en langue vernaculaire en France. C'est le cas des Facta et dicta memorabilia de Valère Maxime dont la traduction fut entamée par Simon de Hesdin en 1375 sous l'impulsion du roi de France Charles V. Inachevé à la mort de celui-ci, le travail fut complété par Nicolas de Gonesse en 1400 pour le duc Jean de Berry. Ce texte connut un franc succès jusqu'à la fin du XVe siècle et ses nombreux manuscrits et incunables, qu'ils soient réalisés en France ou dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux, furent en grande majorité illustrés. De similitude de fourme que aucuns ont eu entre eulx, tel est le titre d'un des chapitres de cette traduction. Celui-ci est emblématique du thème de la transmission de l'iconographie abordé dans cet ouvrage. Saisir les divers aspects de la création de l'iconographie et de sa diffusion permet de mettre en lumière des liens, des interactions entre les manuscrits et ainsi de les regrouper en ensembles homogènes à l'intérieur de cette tradition iconographique. Deux problématiques fondamentales sont abordées: l'attitude des concepteurs de l'illustration face à l'apparition de nouveaux thèmes séculiers, mais surtout les canaux de diffusion des illustrations, aussi bien en France que dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux

    The popularity of the work of Valerius Maximus during the Middle Ages and Renaissance was due to its value as a source of moral exhortation and guidance: the work was as relevant to the readers of those times as it had been to Valerius' contemporaries in the first century AD. Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen demonstrates that the purpose of Valerius' work was to promote a system of morality based upon historical precedent that was both traditional and authoritative to the educated classes for whom he wrote. Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen offers a re-definition of the purpose of Valerius' work and totally new conclusions about its predecessors, form and audience. The book is not confined to an examination of Valerius' work in isolation, but also examines earlier forms of exemplary literature, questions of how Roman literature was communicated to its audience, and presents an entirely new theory on the identity of Valerius Maximus the author.

    Die in der Zeit des Tiberius entstandenen ‚Facta et dicta memorabilia‘ des Valerius Maximus zählten in der Renaissance zu den meistgelesenen und -geschätzten Werken der antiken Literatur. Von Gelehrten des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts meist verachtet, in den letzten Jahrzehnten vor allem als ideologiegeschichtliche Quelle ausgewertet, erweisen sie sich in der hier vorgelegten erzähltechnischen und strukturellen Untersuchung als weit mehr als eine schlichte Anekdotensammlung. Überhalb der Einzelanekdoten – die hier mit großer mikrostruktureller Tiefe narratologisch analysiert werden – wird durch den typologischen Charakter der Kapitel und die kunstvolle, mit Ovids ‚Metamorphosen‘ vergleichbare Kohäsionstechnik eine zweite Schicht von Erzählungen lesbar, die einem häufigen Erscheinungsbild klassischer episodischer Erzählwerke entsprechen.

    Frauen sind in der römischen Literatur der frühen Kaiserzeit keine Randerscheinung. Sie sind als Protagonistinnen von zentraler Bedeutung für römische Krisennarrative. Titus Livius schreibt Frauen das nötige Wissen über römische Werte zu, um Krisen zu lösen. Sie setzen darin Geschlechterhierarchien außer Kraft und verhandeln diese neu. Weibliches Wissen ist unverzichtbar, um das Wertewissen sowie das erfolgreiche Krisenhandeln von Männern erst zu initiieren. Frauen kennzeichnen eine Krise der Männlichkeit in den Narrativen der römischen Republik.Unter Kaiser Tiberius wandelt sich der Diskurs. Es ist ein verändertes Männerbild erkennbar: Valerius Maximus präsentiert in Narrativen aus der Republik und der Kaiserzeit Männer – auch aus der kaiserlichen Herrscherfamilie – als Garanten römischer Moral. Einzig am Ende der Republik sind Männer auf weibliches Handeln und weibliches Wissen angewiesen. Jedoch wird Weiblichkeit auch hier in den Dienst einer idealisierten imperialen Männlichkeit gestellt. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Helmke: Tim Helmke promovierte im Fach Latein an der Universität Osnabrück und ist Gymnasiallehrer an der Graf-Friedrich-Schule in Diepholz.

    Die aus Tiberischer Zeit erhalten gebliebene Literatur hat nie zum Kerngeschäft der Klassischen Philologie gehört -- anders als der literarische Ertrag der angrenzenden Epochen,der in zahlreichen Facetten gut erforscht wurde. Zu den tiberianischen Autoren gibt es zwar mittlerweile Einzeldarstellungen, das erhaltene Textcorpus jedoch wurde noch nie auf ein 'Tiberianisches Element' hin überprüft. Vorliegende Untersuchung geht dem anhand der Werke von Velleius Paterculus, Valerius Maximus, Phaedrus und Seneca d.Ä. erstmals nach. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem Befund eines ihnen gemeinsamen Geschichtsbildes, das sich von den Konstruktionen der Augusteischen und Neronischen Epoche deutlich unterscheidet, da es Kontinuität zeigt, wo andere Leerstellenaufweisen oder Brüche thematisieren.--P.
