    Readings in the Anthropocene" brings together a number of different scholars from German Studies disciplines and beyond to interpret the German tradition of the last two hundred years from a perspective that is mindful of the challenge posed by the concept of the Anthropocene. This new age of man, unofficially pronounced in 2000, holds that humans are becoming a geological force in shaping the Earth's future. Among the biggest challenges facing our future are climate change, accelerated species loss, and a radical transformation of land use. What are the historical, philosophical, cultural, literary, and artistic responses to this new concept?     Glaubwürdigkeit und Vertrauen sind zentrale Ziele der Kommunikation von Corporate Social Responsibility - der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortungsübernahme von Unternehmen. Nachhaltigkeitsberichte gelten dabei als das wichtigste persuasive Kommunikationsmedium, wobei die Rolle der visuellen Argumentation hierbei noch wenig erforscht ist. Sophie Heins geht in ihrer umfassenden designrhetorischen Studie der Frage nach, mit welchen visuell-rhetorischen Mitteln Glaubwürdigkeit in Nachhaltigkeitsberichten erzeugt wird. Dazu analysiert sie die Wirkungen der Designelemente sowie ihr Zusammenspiel, und stellt visuelle Argumentationsarten vor, die eine neue Sicht auf Nachhaltigkeitsberichte ermöglichen

    "Humans have become so powerful that we have disrupted the functioning of the Earth System as a whole, bringing on a new geological epoch--the Anthropocene--one in which the serene and clement conditions that allowed civilisation to flourish are disappearing and we quail before 'the wakened giant'. The emergence of a conscious creature capable of using technology to bring about a rupture in the Earth's geochronology is an event of monumental significance, on a par with the arrival of civilisation itself. What does it mean to have arrived at this point, where human history and Earth history collide? Some interpret the Anthropocene as no more than a development of what they already know, obscuring and deflating its profound significance. But the Anthropocene demands that we rethink everything. The modern belief in the free, reflexive being making its own future by taking control of its environment--even to the point of geoengineering--is now impossible because we have rendered the Earth more unpredictable and less controllable, a disobedient planet. At the same time, all attempts by progressives to cut humans down to size by attacking anthropocentrism come up against the insurmountable fact that human beings now possess enough power to change the Earth's course. It's too late to turn back the geological clock, and there is no going back to premodern ways of thinking. We must face the fact that humans are at the centre of the world, even if we must give the idea that we can control the planet. These truths call for a new kind of anthropocentrism, a philosophy by which we might use our power responsibly and find a way to live on a defiant Earth"--

    Welchen Stellenwert kann 'Wildnis' in einer modernen Gesellschaft einnehmen? Die kontroversen Debatten, die aktuell in Mitteleuropa geführt werden, zeigen die Virulenz dieser Frage. Eine besondere Rolle spielt dabei die Akzeptanz der administrativen Ausweisung von Wildnisgebieten durch die Bevölkerung.Gisela Kangler liefert einen neuen Ansatz, um bestehende Missverständnisse und Konflikte in Bezug auf die Naturschutzidee 'Wildnis' einordnen und verstehen zu können. Analysiert werden drei grundlegend unterschiedliche Auffassungen: 'unbekannte Wildnis', 'bestimmte Wildnis' und 'Ökosystem-Wildnis'. Dabei ermöglicht es die wiederentdeckte progressive Kulturphilosophie Ernst Cassirers, die gesellschaftliche Pluralität in ihrer Mannigfaltigkeit in den Blick zu nehmen.

Obwohl der Ecocriticism international floriert, verzeichnet er kaum systematische gattungstheoretische Beiträge, die sich einem Kerninteresse der ökologisch orientierten Literaturwissenschaft widmen: der Frage nach den Affinitäten verschiedener literarischer Gattungen für ökologisches Wissen und ökologische Strukturen. Dieser Band untersucht die generisch bedingten Dispositionen und Funktionen einer Vielzahl von Genres hinsichtlich der Repräsentation ökologischer Relationen und Transformationen.Ergänzend zu dem in der Forschung vorherrschenden Fokus auf ökologisch engagierte Literatur schärft dieser Band den Blick für die ökologisch konzipierte Literatur und plädiert für eine genauere Untersuchung der Verschränkung beider Aspekte. Bezüge zur biologischen sowie zur angewandten Ökologie kennzeichnen die betrachteten Genres nicht nur auf der thematischen, sondern auch auf der strukturellen Ebene. Betrachtet werden daher neben der Modellierung des Mensch-Natur-Verhältnisses und der Auseinandersetzung mit ökologischen Fragen oder gar einer ökologischen Krise der je spezifische ›Texthaushalt‹ der einzelnen Genres, ihre Rhetorik und Modi der Wissenspopularisierung. Der Band stellt ein breites Spektrum ökologischer Genres aus verschiedenen Epochen, Literaturen und Kulturen vor und analysiert das jeweils charakteristische Zusammenspiel von Naturästhetik, Umweltethik und Wissenspoetik. Somit zeigt er anschaulich, dass ein Zuwachs ökologischen Wissens ebenso wie natürliche und anthropogene ökologische Transformationen verschiedenster Art Transformationen des literarischen Gattungssystems bewirkt haben und bewirken.
