    Gabriele Klein präsentiert eine neue Sichtweise auf die Arbeit des Tanztheaters Wuppertal: Die Entwicklung und Aufführung der Stücke, die Weitergabe von choreografischem Material und die Reaktionen der Öffentlichkeit werden als komplexe, voneinander abhängige und wechselseitige Übersetzungsprozesse dargestellt. Das Buch rückt zum ersten Mal die künstlerische Forschung vor allem bei den internationalen Koproduktionen des weltweit bekannten Ensembles in den Fokus und bietet umfangreiches empirisches Material in Form von Interviews mit Tänzer*innen, Mitarbeiter*innen und Publikum sowie ethnografische Studien an den koproduzierenden Orten.     Wenn Übersetzungszwänge zwischen sozialen Sinnhorizonten den Kardinaleffekt sozialer Differenzierung bilden, kann eine entsprechende Soziologie multipler Differenzierung ihren eigenen Realitätsbezug, wie den jedes anderen Sinnzusammenhanges, nur als eine Art »indirekter Referenz« ausweisen. Joachim Renns Analyse geht einen medientheoretischen Umweg: Sie konzentriert sich zunächst auf die Bedeutung verschiedener Kommunikationsmedien für die eigenlogische Formatierung möglicher Gegenstände der Bezugnahme und erst dann auf die Referenzansprüche der Soziologie selbst. Es zeigt sich: Diese pragmatistische Rekonstruktion einer medialen »Welt-Erschließung« wird - anders als der weit verbreitete Konstruktivismus - der realistischen Intuition einer Soziologie als empirischer Wissenschaft gerecht.

    From the perspective of Latin American Studies, this volume offers a critical contribution to the current debate on world literature. It is structured around three conceptual blocks: "gatekeepers", as the dispositives and actors mediating the international circulation of literature; "translation", as an unavoidable but always problematic mechanism; and "local literatures", as modes of writing that remain intrinsically tied to their contexts. ¿Cómo ingresa la literatura en circulación internacional? ¿Qué factores regulan dicho proceso? ¿Qué transformaciones sufre cuando lo hace? ¿Qué sucede con la que nunca lo consigue o se lo propone? Con foco en la literatura que, de acuerdo con postulados teóricos diseñados en los años 60, es concebida como latinoamericana y con contribuciones de destacados investigadores de diferentes lugares de Europa, América Latina y EE.UU., el volumen Literatura latinoamericana mundial intenta ser un aporte crítico al actual debate sobre literatura mundial. Tres bloques conceptuales, que también son tres de los principales núcleos en torno a los cuales gira la discusión, lo organizan: "gatekeepers", con foco en los dispositivos, actores o instituciones que vehiculizan u obturan la circulación internacional de literatura; "traducción", con reflexiones acerca de este mecanismo ineludible, pero siempre problemático, para que la literatura trascienda fronteras nacionales; y "literaturas locales", concentrado en escrituras y proyectos que, al permanecer aferrados a contextos específicos, constituyen el lado negado de ciertos modelos hegemónicos de la teoría de la literatura mundial.

Venkat Mani presents a historical account of world literature. By locating translation, publication, and circulation along routes of “bibliomigrancy”—the physical and virtual movement of books—Mani narrates how world literature is coded and recoded as literary works find new homes on faraway bookshelves. Mani argues that the proliferation of world literature in a society is the function of a nation’s relationship with print culture—a Faustian pact with books. Moving from early Orientalist collections, to the Nazi magazine Weltliteratur, to the European Digital Library, Mani reveals the political foundations for a history of world literature that is at once a philosophical ideal, a process of exchange, a mode of reading, and a system of classification.Shifting current scholarship’s focus from the academic to the general reader, from the university to the public sphere, Recoding World Literature argues that world literature is culturally determined, historically conditioned, and politically charged.

    The purpose of this volume is to investigate scholastic culture in the Hellenistic and Roman eras, with a particular focus on ancient book and material culture as well as scholarship beyond Greek authors and the Greek language. Accordingly, one of the major contributions of this work is the inclusion of multiple perspectives and its contributors engage not only with elements of Greek scholastic culture, but also bring Greek ideas into conversation with developing Latin scholarship (see chapters by Dickey, Nicholls, Marshall) and the perspective of a minority culture (i.e., Jewish authors) (see chapters by Hezser, Adams). This multicultural perspective is an important next step in the discussion of ancient scholarship and this volume provides a starting point for future inquiries.

    Gabriele Klein entwickelt eine neue Sichtweise auf die künstlerische Arbeit des Tanztheaters Wuppertal. Die Erarbeitung der Stücke, ihre Aufführung, Weitergabe und Rezeption werden als ein reziproker, durch komplexe Übersetzungsprozesse gestalteter Zusammenhang charakterisiert. Erstmals rücken die internationalen Ko-Produktionen und die mit ihnen verbundene künstlerische Forschung in den Fokus. Umfangreiche Interviews mit Tänzer*innen, Mitarbeiter*innen und Publikum sowie ethnografische Studien an den ko-produzierenden Orten stützen die Untersuchung empirisch. Den theoretischen Rahmen bildet eine Praxeologie der kulturellen und ästhetischen Übersetzung, die hier als ein zentrales Konzept der Tanz- und Kunstforschung vorgestellt wird.

    Wordplay involving several linguistic codes represents an important modality of ludic language. It is attested in different epochs, communicative situations, genres, and contexts of use. The translation of wordplay, which is generally seen as a challenging enterprise, illustrates another dimension of crossing linguistic borders in wordplay. The third volume of the series The Dynamics of Wordplay unites contributions from different disciplines which study the creative and playful use of elements from different languages and the transfer of ludic language into other linguistic systems. It sheds light on the multi-dimensionality, special linguistic make-up, and specific interactive potential of wordplay at the interface of different languages and cultures. The individual studies collected in this volume will be of interest to scholars from different scientific fields, such as linguistics and literary studies as well as cultural and media studies.

    Wenn Übersetzungszwänge zwischen sozialen Sinnhorizonten den Kardinaleffekt sozialer Differenzierung bilden, kann eine entsprechende Soziologie multipler Differenzierung ihren eigenen Realitätsbezug, wie den jedes anderen Sinnzusammenhanges, nur als eine Art »indirekter Referenz« ausweisen. Joachim Renns Analyse geht einen medientheoretischen Umweg: Sie konzentriert sich zunächst auf die Bedeutung verschiedener Kommunikationsmedien für die eigenlogische Formatierung möglicher Gegenstände der Bezugnahme und erst dann auf die Referenzansprüche der Soziologie selbst. Es zeigt sich: Diese pragmatistische Rekonstruktion einer medialen »Welt-Erschließung« wird - anders als der weit verbreitete Konstruktivismus - der realistischen Intuition einer Soziologie als empirischer Wissenschaft gerecht.

    This interdisciplinary volume looks at one of the central cultural practices within the Jewish experience: translation. With contributions from literary and cultural scholars, historians, and scholars of religion, the book considers different aspects of Jewish translation, starting from the early translations of the Torah, to the modern Jewish experience of migration, state-building and life in the Diaspora. The volume addresses the question of how Jews have used translation to pursue different cultural and political agendas, such as Jewish nationalism, the development of Yiddish as a literary language, and the collection of Holocaust testimonies. It also addresses how non-Jews have translated elements of the Judaic tradition to create an image of the Other. Covering a wide span of contexts, including religion, literature, photography, music and folk practices, and featuring an interview section with authors and translators, the volume will be of interest not only to scholars of Jewish studies, translation and cultural studies, but also a wider interested audience.

    This interdisciplinary volume looks at one of the central cultural practices within the Jewish experience: translation. With contributions from literary and cultural scholars, historians, and scholars of religion, the book considers different aspects of Jewish translation, starting from the early translations of the Torah, to the modern Jewish experience of migration, state-building and life in the Diaspora. The volume addresses the question of how Jews have used translation to pursue different cultural and political agendas, such as Jewish nationalism, the development of Yiddish as a literary language, and the collection of Holocaust testimonies. It also addresses how non-Jews have translated elements of the Judaic tradition to create an image of the Other. Covering a wide span of contexts, including religion, literature, photography, music and folk practices, and featuring an interview section with authors and translators, the volume will be of interest not only to scholars of Jewish studies, translation and cultural studies, but also a wider interested audience.

    From the perspective of Latin American Studies, this volume offers a critical contribution to the current debate on world literature. It is structured around three conceptual blocks: "gatekeepers", as the dispositives and actors mediating the international circulation of literature; "translation", as an unavoidable but always problematic mechanism; and "local literatures", as modes of writing that remain intrinsically tied to their contexts. ¿Cómo ingresa la literatura en circulación internacional? ¿Qué factores regulan dicho proceso? ¿Qué transformaciones sufre cuando lo hace? ¿Qué sucede con la que nunca lo consigue o se lo propone? Con foco en la literatura que, de acuerdo con postulados teóricos diseñados en los años 60, es concebida como latinoamericana y con contribuciones de destacados investigadores de diferentes lugares de Europa, América Latina y EE.UU., el volumen Literatura latinoamericana mundial intenta ser un aporte crítico al actual debate sobre literatura mundial. Tres bloques conceptuales, que también son tres de los principales núcleos en torno a los cuales gira la discusión, lo organizan: "gatekeepers", con foco en los dispositivos, actores o instituciones que vehiculizan u obturan la circulación internacional de literatura; "traducción", con reflexiones acerca de este mecanismo ineludible, pero siempre problemático, para que la literatura trascienda fronteras nacionales; y "literaturas locales", concentrado en escrituras y proyectos que, al permanecer aferrados a contextos específicos, constituyen el lado negado de ciertos modelos hegemónicos de la teoría de la literatura mundial.

    This book examines three examples of late nineteenth-century Japanese adaptations of Western literature: a biography of U.S. Grant recasting him as a Japanese warrior, a Victorian novel reset as oral performance, and an American melodrama redone as a serialized novel promoting the reform of Japanese theater. Written from a comparative perspective, it argues that adaptation (hon'an) was a valid form of contemporary Japanese translation that fostered creative appropriation across many genres and among a diverse group of writers and artists. In addition, it invites readers to reconsider adaptation in the context of translation theory.

Mani argues that the proliferation of world literature in a society is the function of a nation’s relationship with print culture—a Faustian pact with books.     Following the Formula in Beowulf, Örvar-Odds saga, and Tolkien proposes that Beowulf was composed according to a formula. Michael Fox imagines the process that generated the poem and provides a model for reading it, extending this model to investigate formula in a half-line, a fitt, a digression, and a story-pattern or folktale, including the Old-Norse Icelandic Örvar-Odds saga. Fox also explores how J. R. R. Tolkien used the same formula to write Sellic Spell and The Hobbit. This investigation uncovers relationships between oral and literate composition, between mechanistic composition and author, and between listening and reading audiences, arguing for a contemporary relevance for Beowulf in thinking about the creative process.

    Seit Jahrhunderten gibt es den Wunsch, das komplexe Gefüge des Gehirns und der Denkprozesse zu formalisieren. Hannah Fitsch geht der Geschichte dieses Wunsches nach, indem sie mit Hilfe des Begriffs der Mathematisierung der Wahrnehmung die Geschichte der mathematischen Logik und der Übersetzungsprozesse in binäre/informatische Technologien nachzeichnet. Dabei zeigt sie auf, wie Methoden und Modelle aus der Informatik und der Mathematik Eingang in die Hirnforschung gefunden haben.
