    Im Zentrum der Studie steht ein kulturgeschichtlich fundamentaler Vorgang der europäischen Vormoderne: die Technologisierung von Unterricht durch Schrift. Schule hält nicht nur die Voraussetzungen für die Literalisierung der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft bereit, sondern muss den Umgang mit dem Medium Schrift auch selbst erlernen. Entsprechend verändern sich die Unterrichtsmedien von Jahrhundert zu Jahrhundert. Den wechselnden Formen der Darbietung von Lektüretexten in Handschrift und Buchdruck und ihrer Erschließung durch Glosse und Kommentar lässt sich eine zunehmende funktionale Auffaltung des mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Schulbuchs ablesen, in der wiederum entscheidende Phasen der Institutionalisierung und Ausdifferenzierung von Schule überhaupt sich manifestieren. Ein erster Untersuchungsteil zieht Grundlinien der Verschriftlichung des Anfangsunterrichts in der grammatica im europäischen Rahmen und vom 8. Jahrhundert bis zum Buchdruck aus. Ein zweiter Abschnitt verfolgt die Integration der Volkssprache ins Schulbuch, die als pragmatische Annäherung an die Lernvoraussetzung des zunächst volkssprachigen Lateinschülers verstanden werden kann, im deutschen Sprachraum an den Übersetzung der ‚Disticha Catonis‘ von ihren Anfängen im 13. Jahrhundert bis zu Martin Opitz 1629. Ein Quellenanhang stellt einen umfangreichen Thesaurus vormoderner Schulbücher bereit.

It examines a variety of textbooks including: standard rhetorics, handbooks, cross-cultural anthologies, readers, technical textbooks, and argumentation textbooks. Different perspectives are used to discuss the cultures, ideologies, traditions, and the material and political conditions that influence the writing and publishing of these works.     Provides a new account of the emergence of Irish gothic fiction in mid-eighteenth century. This book provides a robustly theorised and thoroughly historicised account of the 'beginnings' of Irish gothic fiction, maps the theoretical terrain covered by other critics, and puts forward a new history of the emergence of the genre in Ireland. The main argument the book makes is that the Irish gothic should be read in the context of the split in Irish Anglican public opinion that opened in the 1750s, and seen as a fictional instrument of liberal Anglican opinion in a changing political landscape. By providing a fully historicized account of the beginnings of the genre in Ireland, the book also addresses the theoretical controversies that have bedevilled discussion of the Irish gothic in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The book gives ample space to the critical debate, and rigorously defends a reading of the Irish gothic as an Anglican, Patriot tradition. This reading demonstrates the connections between little-known Irish gothic fictions of the mid-eighteenth century (The Adventures of Miss Sophia Berkley and Longsword), and the Irish gothic tradition more generally, and also the gothic as a genre of global significance.     This book provides an overview of the modifications and interaction of the Second-Language Learning discursive formation and the Identity discursive formation over four centuries of Russian history. It proposes an explanatory model in which small-scale linguistic detail is combined harmoniously with larger-scale language units in order to illuminate matters of cultural importance in their linguistic guise. Hallmark of its interdisciplinary scope is the isomorphic interpretation of image and text. Compositionally, interdisciplinarity pours into a nonlinear narrative; this narrative follows a spiral, redefining on a higher level and in a different setting distinctions, which were first discovered on a lower level with the theoretical devices of other disciplines. The lower coil of the helix accommodates the complementary argumentations of anthropology and lexical semantics; the higher one brings the conclusions to the plane of discourse analysis and semiotics.
