This thesis evolved from exploring a corpus of 1021 poems from 44 volumes of poetry by the Syrian poet and diplomat Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998). Statistical investigations with the corpus analysis tools Voyant and Sketch: Engine reinforced some of the 'prejudices' that both Arab and non-Arab readers and scholars usually harbour towards Qabbani's texts: That they are mainly about women and love. However, a distant reading using computations of frequencies, statistical keywords and topics yielded an unexpected result: The sea (Arabic al-baḥr) is the most frequently referenced geophysical entity; in 1021 texts, the type al-baḥr 'the sea' appears 265 times, and derivatives of √bḥr, whose semantics are mainly related to the sea, 540 times, distributed over 286 of the 1021 texts. The review of these 286 texts revealed that √bḥr-words have a particular effect when they're used in the microcosm of a love relationship to characterise the addressee - the beloved woman. 75 poems show that √bḥr-words can be employed in three ways to conceptualise the beloved: (1) she's equated with the sea or marine and maritime entities such as fish and harbours; (2) she has power over the sea, dominates it or even possesses it; (3) her body - especially the eyes - is associated with the sea, or with the marine and maritime. A close reading of 39 of these 75 poems supported by data visualisations with RAWgraphs evidenced that, cognitive-linguistically in the sense of George Lakoff, various paraphiers of the source domain SEA come to effect when conceptualising the beloved as a target domain; most analogies, however, result from sensually perceptible qualities such as the colour of the sea. While in Arab literary discourse the focus is more on the land, Qabbani's poetry bares a holistic understanding of the sea - including marine flora and fauna, maritime aspects of seafaring, and the seascape - which inspires to read Arabic literature ecocentrically in general and thalassologically in particular.

We examine the existence of physical and transition climate risk premia in euro area equity markets. To do so, we develop two novel physical and transition risk indicators, based on text analysis, which are then used to gauge the presence of climate risk premia. Results suggest that climate risk premia for both, transition and physical climate risk, have increased since the time of the Paris Agreement. In addition, we investigate which metrics may be used by investors to proxy a firm's exposure to either physical or transition risk. To this end, we construct portfolios according to the most common firm-specific climate metrics and estimate the sensitivity of these portfolios to our risk indicators. We compare results from these firmlevel proxies to much simpler sectoral classifications to see if investors may simply pigeonhole firms into the industry they operate in. We find that firm level information appears to be used as a gauge for transition risk, in particular since 2015, whereas sectoral classifications appear insufficient. However, sectoral classification may be employed to broadly gauge firms' exposures to physical risk.

The dynamics of online news and political outcomes have been of high interest in various research fields in recent years. This paper provides a new method to estimate media bias using a structural topic model and cosine similarity to test slanting toward different political actors. For the empirical analysis, the content of German online newspapers and press releases of German parties during the election campaign before the federal election in 2017 is analyzed. Following the assumption that a) potential media bias is demand-driven and b) election results can be used as a proxy for reader beliefs, the results show that news articles of most newspapers slant towards AfD topics. Furthermore, we find evidence for the hypothesis that the election day results in changes in news coverage since newspapers can observe the true beliefs of readers.

A growing body of literature analyses the impact of news on companies' equity prices. We add to this literature by showing that the transmission channel of news to prices differs across sectors. First, we disentangle sectoral equity prices into components of expected future earnings and equity risk premia. Then, we evaluate how these react to general and sector specific sentiment shocks constructed from Reuters news articles. We find that price changes for especially the financial sector are mainly driven by changes in equity risk premia, while changes in earnings expectations play a comparatively larger role for other sectors.

This paper shows that newspaper articles contain timely economic signals that can materially improve nowcasts of real GDP growth for the euro area. Our text data is drawn from fifteen popular European newspapers, that collectively represent the four largest Euro area economies, and are machine translated into English. Daily sentiment metrics are created from these news articles and we assess their value for nowcasting. By comparing to competitive and rigorous benchmarks, we find that newspaper text is helpful in nowcasting GDP growth especially in the first half of the quarter when other lower-frequency soft indicators are not available. The choice of the sentiment measure matters when tracking economic shocks such as the Great Recession and the Great Lockdown. Non-linear machine learning models can help capture extreme movements in growth, but require sufficient training data in order to be effective so become more useful later in our sample.

Stricter regulations, particularly in a few sectors, could affect operations costs, ultimately impacting companies financial performances, especially of listed companies. There are two ways these companies can disclose their transition risk exposure and are not alternatives. One is the explicit declaration of exposure to transition risk in the legally binding documents that listed companies must provide authorities. The other is the disclosure of GHG equivalent emissions, which is implicitly associated with transition risk exposure. This paper empirically analyses to what extent US companies stock returns incorporate information about transition risk by using explicit and implicit risk measures and comparing them. In addition, multiple total stock return measures distinguishing dividend payouts from simple stock returns. Results suggest that both explicit and implicit risks are positively related to dividend payouts and not to stock returns, while the overall effect on total stock returns is negative. Evidence supports the view that market operators price negatively the transition risk exposure and, probably as a consequence, boards in carbon intensive companies use dividend policies to attract investment in risky companies.
