    An exploration of public performance in everyday life, by the leading cultural and social thinkerThe Performer explores the relations between performing in art (particularly music), politics and everyday experience. It focuses on the bodily and physical dimensions of performing, rather than on words. Richard Sennett is particularly attuned to the ways in which the rituals of ordinary life are performances.The book draws on history and sociology, and more personally on the author's early career as a professional cellist, as well as on his later work as a city planner and social thinker. It traces the evolution of performing spaces in the city; the emergence of actors, musicians, and dancers as independent artists; the inequality between performer and spectator; the uneasy relations between artistic creation and social and religious ritual; the uses and abuses of acting by politicians.     Vor allem ein Aufsatz aus den »Präludien« zieht bis heute besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf sich, nämlich die Straßburger Rektoratsrede über »Geschichte und Naturwissenschaft« von 1894, in der Windelband die bekannte und in der Folgezeit einflussreiche Unterscheidung zwischen der nomothetischen und der idiographischen Methode von Wissenschaft trifft. Diese Fokussierung auf einen einzigen Text ist allerdings angesichts der Fülle der übrigen behandelten Themen gegenüber Windelbands Intentionen verengend und vereinseitigend: Es finden sich Aufsätze zur theoretischen wie zur praktischen Philosophie, zur Ästhetik und Religionsphilosophie sowie Abhandlungen u. a. zu Kant, Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin, Fichte und Hegel.Mit dieser kommentierten Edition kommt somit ein wichtiger Textkorpus in Gänze wieder zum Abdruck. Durch Edition und Kommentar der Herausgeber wird ein zentrales Dokument der neukantianischen Bewegung erstmals in historischkritischer Ausgabe zugänglich gemacht.

    "The first detailed treatment of Switzerland in British literature and culture from Joseph Addison to John Ruskin, this book analyzes the aesthetic and political uses of what is commonly called the 'Swiss myth' in the parallel development of Romanticism and liberalism. The myth merged the country's legends going back to the Middle Ages with the Enlightenment image of a happy, free nation of alpine shepherds. Its unique combination of conservative, progressive, and radical associations enabled writers before the French Revolution to call for democratic reforms, whereas those coming after could refigure it as a conservative alternative to French liberté. Integrating intellectual history with literary studies, and addressing a wide range of Romantic-period texts and authors, among them Byron, the Shelleys, Hemans, Scott, Coleridge, and, above all, Wordsworth, the book argues that the myth contributed to the liberal idea of the people as a sublime yet sleeping sovereign"--

    The 1978 publication of Edward Said's Orientalism unsettled the world. Over two decades earlier Aime Cesaire had famously spoken of the boomerang effect of colonization, which dehumanized both the colonizer and the colonized. Over time, Said and his 1978 book took Cesaire's anti-imperial critique one step further by enabling the boomerang effect of decolonization.Inspired by that intellectual trajectory, The Boomerang Effect of Decolonization redefines post-Orientalism in a relational and integrative way. This volume draws on the reception and critique of Said's ideas as well as his own attempts to appropriate the boomerang's recursive nature and empower decolonial processes that aimed to transform everyone, regardless of differences both imagined and real, for the betterment of all. Reflecting upon Orientalism, its legacies, and the myriad conversations it has generated, scholars from various disciplines examine acts of anti-racism and liberation through the lens of critical race theory. Covering topics including Said's anti-Orientalist world, Metis/Michif consciousness, writing by the French scholar Jacques Berque, the politics of allyship in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the convergence between healthcare and settler-colonialism in Northwestern Ontario, contributors explore the different paths critiques of imperial cultures and their politics of difference have travelled in Canada and abroad. Said's Orientalism reoriented both decolonization itself and his readers' imaginations. By redefining post-Orientalism as a relational and inclusive mode of liberation, this volume offers tools to think about difference differently, centring its anti-racist framework on the relationship between misrepresented people and their rewritten histories. Although Edward Said acknowledged his debt to Syed Hussein Alatas' work, especially its influence on Edward W.     Auf zentralen gesellschaftlichen Ebenen – technologisch in den digitalen Netzwerken mit ihren »hate speeches« und »shit storms«, ökonomisch im kapitalistisch rasenden Prozess der Globalisierung, kulturell im Kampf religiös unterfütterter Wertsysteme und staatspolitisch im kriegerischen Zerfall von Nationen – haben sich in den vergangenen zwei bis drei Jahrzehnten die Schleusen für eine Politik der Emotionen geöffnet. Welche Rolle aber spielen Gefühle in einer demokratischen Lebensform? Und welche Rolle kommt den von Kunst und populärer Kultur angeleiteten Erfahrungen dabei zu? Die entscheidende Frage kann heute nicht mehr sein, ob, sondern in welchem Ausmaß und in welchem Sinn Gefühle eine Rolle im demokratischen Streit spielen und spielen sollen. Auf diese Frage – so die These Früchtls – gibt es vier zentrale Antworten. Im politischen Zusammenhang verlangen Gefühle nämlich nach einer zeitgemäßen Form der Darstellung, nach Mäßigung, nach balancierendem Ausgleich und nach sinnvoller Umwandlung. Diese vierfache Reaktion lässt sich entweder unter Mithilfe von ästhetischen Erfahrungen oder sogar in ausgezeichneter Weise durch sie erreichen.

In den letzten 15 Jahren hat er eine Reihe von Beiträgen zu beinahe allen zentralen Themen der Hegelschen Philosophie verfasst, die zum Teil an entlegenen Orten erschienen und nun in Auswahl in diesem Buch zusammengestellt sind. Sensationell ist der Editionsbericht zu GW 2, mit dem der Band eröffnet wird: Mit Hilfe neuer Schrift- und Papieranalysen, die eine veränderte Datierung der Frankfurter Schriften ermöglichen, kann Jaeschke zeigen, dass das Bild, nach dem Hegel sich als junger Mann vor allem mit Theologie beschäftigt habe, eine Erfindung seiner Nachlassverwalter war, die nach seinem Tod nachgelassene Texte selektiv vernichteten, um den inzwischen als Pantheisten verketzerten Hegel als Theologen zu kanonisieren. Die thematische Spannweite der Aufsätze und Vorträge des Bandes reicht vom Frühwerk über die Phänomenologie des Geistes (»Die Erfahrung des Bewusstseins«, »Das Selbstbewusstsein des Bewusstseins« und »Das absolute Wissen«) und die Wissenschaft der Logik bis zu den Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts, berührt die Hegelsche Verfassungsschrift (»Machtstaat und Kulturstaat«), metaphysisches bzw. vielmehr metaphysik-kritisches Denken bei Hegel, die Begriffe Person/Persönlichkeit und Anerkennung, das Verhältnis zwischen dem Geist und den Wissenschaften sowie Hegels Anthropologie. Weitere Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit Hegels – oftmals simplifizierend aufgefasster – Geschichtsphilosophie, seinem Verhältnis zur antiken griechischen Kultur, seiner Ästhetik und Religionsphilosophie sowie der Kritik an der Romantik.     Die weltweite Diskussion und Rezeption des philosophischen Œuvre von Leo Strauss wurde mit dem 2001 vorgelegten, seit langem vergriffenen Band 3 der Gesammelten Schriften auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt. Er enthält Strauss’ Hobbes-Buch und beinahe 600 Seiten Erstveröffentlichungen, darunter vier Briefwechsel, die zu den philosophisch bedeutendsten Korrespondenzen des 20. Jahrhunderts zählen. »Hobbes politische Wissenschaft«, 1934/35 in Cambridge auf Deutsch geschrieben und 1936 in englischer Übersetzung veröffentlicht, hat Strauss’ frühen Ruhm in der angelsächsischen Welt begründet. In die revidierte Edition des deutschen Originals sind erstmals die Ergänzungen und Zusätze der englischen Ausgabe von 1936 eingearbeitet. Hinzu kommen die »Anmerkungen zu Carl Schmitt, Der Begriff des Politischen« von 1932 mit den Marginalien des Handexemplars von Strauss und neben weiteren unveröffentlichten Texten die 1933/34 geschriebene Monographie »Die Religionskritik des Hobbes. Ein Beitrag zum Verständnis der Aufklärung«. Sie wurde inzwischen in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt. Dasselbe gilt für die Korrespondenzen mit Gerhard Krüger, Jacob Klein, Karl Löwith und Gershom Scholem, die der zweite Teil des Bandes präsentiert: 320 Briefe und Gegenbriefe aus der Zeit von 1928 bis 1973 auf 400 Druckseiten. Die ungekürzte Publikation der Briefe zeigt den Denkweg von Strauss in einem klaren Licht und hält einige Überraschungen bereit.

Andreas Dorschel entwirft zudem in knapper Form eine Philosophie des philosophischen Dialogs. Form und Genre sind in der Philosophie den Gedanken nicht äußerlich und kleiden sie nicht lediglich ein, sondern eröffnen je eigene Erkenntnismöglichkeiten. In der Philosophie der Gegenwart bleiben jedoch die Möglichkeiten, die das Genre Dialog eröffnet, weitgehend ungenutzt. Jeder der Dialoge in diesem Buch spielt in einer historischen Situation der Neuzeit, vom 16. bis zum frühen 21. Jahrhundert, und an einem bestimmten Ort, von Walden, Massachusetts, bis Wien, von Florenz bis zur Halbinsel Wittow auf Rügen. Es begegnen sich etwa Mary Wollstonecraft und der Graf von Schlabrendorf während der französischen Revolution, Naphta und Settembrini in Wien, Emil Jannings und Natalia Sedowa in Erfurt. Die Dialoge werden zu Wortwechseln nicht nur in dem Sinne, dass die Rede zwischen mehreren Personen wechselt, sondern auch insofern, als die Worte selbst sich umfärben, ihre Bedeutung in Fluss gerät. Das Gespräch entzieht die Begriffe, um die es geht, dem abstrakten Raum reiner Theorie.

The myth merged the country's legends going back to the Middle Ages with the Enlightenment image of a happy, free nation of alpine shepherds. Its unique combination of conservative, progressive, and radical associations enabled writers before the French Revolution to call for democratic reforms, whereas those coming after could refigure it as a conservative alternative to French liberté.
