    In the Graeco-Roman world, the cosmic order was enacted, in part, through bodies. The evaluative divisions between, for example, women and men, humans and animals, "barbarians" and "civilized" people, slaves and free citizens, or mortals and immortals, could all be played out across the terrain of somatic difference, embedded as it was within wider social and cultural matrices.This volume explores these thematics of bodies and boundaries: to examine the ways in which bodies, lived and imagined, were implicated in issues of cosmic order and social organisation in classical antiquity. It focuses on the body in performance (especially in a rhetorical context), the erotic body, the dressed body, pagan and Christian bodies as well as divine bodies and animal bodies. The articles draw on a range of evidence and approaches, cover a broad chronological and geographical span, and explore the ways bodies can transgress and dissolve, as well shore up, or even create, boundaries and hierarchies. This volume shows that boundaries are constantly negotiated, shifted and refigured through the practices and potentialities of embodiment

Im Kontext körperlicher Selbstwahrnehmung und -narration spielt der Rekurs auf Vergangenheit eine entscheidende Rolle. In ihrer Eigenschaft, Körperlichkeit zu fixieren und in kulturelle Artefakte zu transformieren, sind mediale Narrationen einerseits Ressourcen der biografischen Selbstreflexion und Selbsterzählung; andererseits bieten diese Anlässe, das Leben und seine körperverhafteten Begrenzungen anders zu imaginieren und neu zu denken, so etwa über die Verquickung von Körper und Technologie. Mit dieser Perspektivität des Seins ist ein für identitätstheoretische Überlegungen entscheidender Grundgedanke verbunden: Körperbilder sind kein statischer Symbolvorrat, der von Subjekten lediglich angeeignet wird, sondern diese entstehen in Prozessen einer wechselseitigen Wahrnehmung von Subjekten im Wandel der Zeit. Der Band akzentuiert vor diesem Hintergrund die diachrone Dimension von Prozessen der Identitätsbildung im Spannungsfeld von individuellen Körpergeschichten und Mediatisierungsdynamiken sowie von kulturellen Deutungsschemata und gesellschaftlichen Transformationsutopien.

Paul Lopes calls this the Heroic Age of American Art, and identifies two artists--Miles Davis and Martin Scorsese--as two of its leading icons. Mit diesen Fragestellungen gibt der Band spannende Impulse zu den Cultural Studies wie auch zu den theoretisch avancierten Gender und Media Studies.

    A political science approach integrates multidisciplinary case studies about culture and language from multiple perspectives. Culture and language are viewed broadly with topics ranging widely across the conflict/cooperation continuum of human activities. Case studies involve four perspectives on culture and language – linguistic perspectives, cultural perspectives, identity perspectives, and visual perspectives. Each chapter is self-standing with conclusions about the case study at hand. The final chapter integrates all the case studies with separate conclusions about each of the four perspectives.
