The colonial experience of the early twentieth century shaped Korea’s culture and identity, leaving a troubling past that was subtly reconstructed in South Korean postcolonial cinema. Relating postcolonial discourses to a reading of Manchurian action films, kisaeng and gangster films, and revenge horror films, Parameters of Disavowal shows how filmmakers reworked, recontextualized, and erased ideas and symbols of colonial power. In particular, Jinsoo An examines how South Korean films privileged certain sites, such as the kisaeng house and the Manchurian frontier, generating unique meanings that challenged the domination of the colonial power, and how horror films indirectly explored both the continuing trauma of colonial violence and lingering emotional ties to the colonial order. Espousing the ideology of nationalism while responding to a new Cold War order that positioned Japan and South Korea as political and economic allies, postcolonial cinema formulated distinctive ways of seeing and imagining the colonial past.

While heated debates in Europe have focused on how to respond if Donald J. Trump is re-elected to the White House, discussions in Australia, Japan, and South Korea reveal a greater sense of confidence in Washington's commitments. The fear that the United States would withdraw its nuclear assurances is much less pronounced in the Indo-Pacific than in Europe. This serenity appears primarily grounded in a shared understanding that a bipartisan consensus is driving the US commitment to contain China's rise - a goal that requires reliable allies across the Pacific. At the same time, US allies want to maintain the regional status quo and are willing to support Washington's efforts. Trump's potential return does little to change these structural incentives. Instead, Pacific allies fear challenges to the East Asian regional order, challenges that are also relevant for Europe's security and prosperity.

This paper presents an heuristics of economic action in South Korea which is based on a qualitative study conducted on-site. It focuses on the idea of experience-near concepts - as introduced by Clifford Geertz - and is verbalised by the terms affiliation, indebtedness and mediation. The developed heuristics serve to explain the social imbeddedness of economic action in South Korea.

What are the characteristics of President Moon Jae-in's policy toward North Korea, and what lessons can be drawn for the future? More than 70 years have passed since the establishment of the two republics in 1948, during which continuous attempts have been made to achieve reconciliation, peace, and prosperity on the Korean peninsula. Even though the Korean War (1950-53) as well as the last authoritarian government in South Korea (until 1987) belong to the ever more distant past, neither, obviously, have the conflicts between the two Koreas ceased, nor has South Korea found a reasonable and effective way of addressing the conundrum. Against this backdrop of more than half a century of contentious inter-Korean relations, the paper examines the foreign policy (efforts) by the Moon administration (2017-2022) toward North Korea in order to shed light on challenges and opportunities for the future regarding the region of East Asia as well as inter-regional policy implications.

While imperfect substitutability between native and immigrant workers is one of the important mechanisms in estimating the wage effects of immigration, its empirical literature is concentrated on the context of only a few countries. Using occupation task-intensity data from a unique Korean dataset, we demonstrate that native Korean workers respond to increased immigration by pursuing jobs more intensive in communication tasks. This result explains how task specialization from immigration could be a general pattern across countries

Since the beginning of 2017, a paradigm change in international trade policy is observed. While the protectionist agendas are on the rise, the EU and Japan signed an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on 17 July 2018. It is the most ambitious agreement of the EU with any Asian state. The study estimates the effect of the EU-Japan EPA for Austria based on qualitative analysis and a structural gravity model. The model predicts small but positive effects of around 0.01% of GDP for Austria. Highest gains are expected for manufactured goods, particularly in the medium- and high-tech sectors.

South Korea has experienced a great U-turn in its inequality trends during the past few decades. In this paper, we explore the role of international trade in its wage inequality dynamics over the 1998-2012 period, using a unique household panel survey. Our analysis reveals that most of the overall wage inequality occurs within sectors and educational groups rather than between them. However, the share in total inequality of the "between" variation across sectors and educational groups has moderately increased over time. Furthermore, we document that almost the entire aggregate wage inequality in both manufacturing and services occurs within different trade exposure categories rather than between them, and this pattern is persistent through time. These results suggest that international trade might not be the main driving force behind the rising wage dispersion in South Korea in the last two decades

This study examines non-governmental organizations' (NGOs) settlement assistance to North Korean migrants into South Korean society from 2006 to 2008. This paper argues that nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and clients need to develop an effective partnership in which trust is deeply grounded. This will not only facilitate effective service delivery and satisfactory cooperation, but also increase the likelihood of future cooperation between NGOs and clients. NGOs' settlement assistance to North Korean migrants in South Korea serves as a case study we developed from findings derived from in-depth interviews, which were conducted from November 2006 through June 2007, with follow-up conducted through August 2008. We draw to collaborative governance and trust theories that locate the development of public-private partnership and effectiveness of service provision to address a broader debate about the role of NGOs to mediate migrants' settlement in a host society

In this paper, we examine the dynamic effect of tobacco control policies on tobacco consumption using the recent implementation of such policies in Korea. The results show that such policies discretely reduce the incidence and amount of tobacco consumptions. We document that after the initial drop, spending on tobacco products gradually recovered towards the pre-policy level. We also find that there is considerable heterogeneity in the persistence of the impact of tobacco control policies. For higher income households, the impact dissipated approximately six months after the implementation of the policy whereas for low-income households, it persisted through the first year

The Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) gained global attention in the late 1990s when knowledge was increasingly recognized as an important element for successful, sustainable development. Accordingly, South Korea has utilized the KSP to further promote its development cooperation efforts by sharing the strategies from its development experience through the country's Official Development Assistance (ODA). Given that the KSP has become the representative of South Korea's ODA strategy, this paper first examines the theoretical basis for the KSP through the three different frameworks of international, development, and cooperation. After overviewing the suggested method of evaluation and assessment for the KSP, this paper compares and contrasts the South Korea's ODA strategies with that of China. By surveying the case studies of African countries, this paper explores whether the traditional development ingredient of capital (K) may be replaced with the new element of knowledge (K) in the arena of international development cooperation. Results reveal that these two endowments are not substitutes but rather complementary and further cooperation between South Korea and China is recommended to have synergy in promoting sustainable development in developing countries

South Korea has boasted one of the world's most successful economies since the end of World War II. The South Korean labor market has recovered quickly from the depths of the Asian crisis in 1998, and has since remained surprisingly sound and stable. The unemployment rate has remained relatively low, and average real earnings have steadily increased. The South Korean labor market was resilient in the wake of the global financial crisis. However, there are issues that require attention, including high earnings inequality, an aging labor force, increasing part-time jobs, and rising youth unemployment rates.

The North Korean economy has been a statistical black hole for decades but is undergoing substantial transformations. Rapid post-war industrialisation was not sustained beyond the mid-1960s and South Korea’s economy far outpaced North Korea’s during the next three decades, during which trend growth declined and turned negative as Soviet support ended and the terms of trade with China became less friendly. Today, GDP in North Korea is reportedly lower than in 1990, notwithstanding a larger population, and gross national income per capita is probably down to only a tiny fraction of South Korea’s.
