Anti-racist and queer politics have tentatively converged in the activist agendas, organizing strategies and political discourses of the radical left all over the world. Pejoratively dismissed as »identity politics«, the significance of this cross-pollination of theorizing and political solidarities has yet to be fully countenanced. Even less well understood, coalitions of anti-racist and queer activisms in western Europe have fashioned durable organizations and creative interventions to combat regnant anti-Muslim and anti-migrant racism within mainstream gay and lesbian culture and institutions, just as the latter consolidates and capitalizes on their uneven inclusions into national and international orders. The essays in this volume represent a small snapshot of writers working at this point of convergence between anti-racist and queer politics and scholarship from the context of Germany. Translated for the first time into English, these four writers and texts provide a compelling introduction to what the introductory essay calls »a Berlin chapter of the Queer Intersectional«, that is, an international justice movement conducted in the key of academic analysis and political speech which takes inspiration from and seeks to synthesize the fruitful concoction of anti-racist, queer, feminist and anti-capitalist traditions, movements and theories. "Lesbian Identities and the Gender Wars provides important theoretical background and context to the 'gender wars' or 'TERF wars' ? the violent feminist fracture at the forefront of the LGBTQ international conversation. Using queer and female masculinities as a lens, Finn Mackay investigates the current generational shift that is refusing the previous assumed fixity of sex, gender and sexual identity. Transgender and transsexual rights movements are currently experiencing political backlash from within certain lesbian and lesbian feminist groups, resulting in a situation where, unfortunately, these two minority communities are frequently pitted against one another or perceived as diametrically opposed. Uniquely, Finn Mackay approaches this debate through the context of lesbian masculinity, butch and transmasculine female masculinities. There has been increasing interest in the study of masculinity, influenced by a popular discourse around so-called 'toxic masculinity', the rise of men's rights activism and theory and critical work on Trump's America and the MeToo movement. An increasingly important topic in political science and sociological academia, this book aims to break new ground in the discussion of the politics of gender and identity."--...

"Christopher Chitty was a graduate student and activist at UC-Santa Cruz who committed suicide in 2015. The project that Chitty left behind, entitled SEXUAL HEGEMONY, reveals how the policing of male homosexuality happened in conjunction with the establishment of capitalist economies across Europe and the U.S. Writing against a thesis of modernization in which sexual freedom advances alongside the development of commodity production and state formation, Chitty instead shows how the rise of capitalism has embedded a bourgeois sexual hegemony into property relations, economic crises, and political institutions. Drawing on queer theory, Marxism, Foucault, Gramsci, and world-systems-analysis, Chitty demonstrates that male same-sex intimacy and sex have systematically been constructed as problematic for bourgeois polities. The book begins with an introduction by Christopher Nealon that situates Chitty's work among new scholarship bringing Marxism into conversation with queer theory, and that speculates on some of the Marxist feminist texts that might have helped extend Chitty's limited analysis of lesbian and other non-male queer sexualities. Chitty's own work begins by considering Michel Foucault's idea that sexuality arises from the discourse of sexual science. Instead, Chitty argues that sexuality came into being as a result of the contradiction between the forces and relations of production inherent in the development of capitalism. The book's chapters proceed in chronological order, tracking the politicization of male homosexuality in Florence, Amsterdam, London, Paris, and New York. Chitty considers the secular offices of the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean world, which employed a sliding scale of penalties to regulate a flourishing culture of sodomy in Florence [...].

This book systematically analyses representations of Black masculinity in gay men’s pornography. This book unpacks 1) the character of pornographic representations of queer Black masculinity and 2) how these representations vary between corporate and non-corporate producers. The author argues that representations of Black men in gay porn rely on stereotypes of Black masculinity to arouse consumers, especially those which characterize Black men as "missing links" or focus excessively on their "dark phalluses." Moreover, these depictions consistently separate gay Black and white men’s sexuality into bifurcated discursive spaces, thereby essentializing sexual aspects of racial identity. Lastly, though such depictions are less prevalent in user-submitted videos, overall, both user-submitted and corporate content reify stereotypes about Black masculinity. This book is written for researchers, lecturers, and graduate courses in the social sciences and humanities, including Sociology, Social Psychology, Sexuality, African American Studies, Women and Gender Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Culture and Art Studies, Porn Studies, Social Media Studies, and Public Health

"Global City Futures offers a queer analysis of urban and national development in Singapore, the Southeast Asian city-state commonly cast as a leading 'global city.' Much discourse on Singapore focuses on its extraordinary socioeconomic development, and on the fact that many city and national governors around the world see it as a developmental model. But counter-narratives complicate this success story, pointing out rising income inequalities, the lack of a social safety net, an unjust migrant labor regime, significant restrictions on civil liberties, and more. Global City Futures contributes to such critical perspectives by centering recent debates over the place of homosexuality in the city-state. It extends out from these debates to consider the ways in which the race, class, and gender biases that are already well critiqued in the literature on Singapore (and on other cities around the world) are tied in key ways to efforts to make the city-state into not just a heterosexual space that excludes 'queer' subjects, but a heteronormative one that 'queers' many more than LGBT people. The book thus argues for the importance of taking the politics of sexuality and intimacy much more seriously within both Singapore studies and the wider field of urban studies"
