    Henry James and the "Aliens" intervenes substantially in current debates in James studies, most notably in the key areas of cultural studies, ethnic studies and queer studies. Focusing throughout on questions of identity, and most prominently on how the latter is given shape in the very form of the late style, the book finds that James's response to the ethnic other can be grasped neither as an attempt to police, supervise and master the other, nor as a politics of non-identical surrender to that other. Instead, there is a continuum of identity-akin to the "criminal continuity" that James registers throughout the American scene-in which self and other, native and alien, subject and object adopt alternate roles of control and submission. Both are at times in possession of the American scene and possessed by that scene. Jamesian sexual identity, too, proves to be constantly reconstituted in transitive processes of signification that make it impossible to fix the "I" or the "other" within a fixed framework-be that framework a heterosexual or a homosexual one. The eroticism that strikingly informs the late James can therefore only be captured, if at all, under the rubric of the "queer.".

    Sexualität als Brennpunkt des Konflikts zwischen Kontrolle und Freiheit ist ein Schlüsselthema in den frühen Romanen der amerikanischen Postmoderne. Magda Majewska beleuchtet den Zusammenhang zwischen experimenteller literarischer Praxis, Kulturkritik und Sexualität am Beispiel von Thomas Pynchons Gravity's Rainbow und William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Dabei rekonstruiert sie das Verhältnis von Trieb und Kultur in den beiden Romanen vor dem Hintergrund freudomarxistischer Diskurse der sexuellen Befreiung und ihrer Bedeutung für die amerikanische Gegenkultur. Erst diese ideengeschichtliche Einbettung erlaubt es, die Welthaltigkeit und politische Stoßkraft des postmodernen Romans offenzulegen.

    This book explores representations of intersex - intersex persons, intersex communities, and intersex as a cultural concept and knowledge category - in contemporary North American literature and popular culture. The study turns its attention to the significant paradigm shift in the narratives on intersex that occurred within early 1990s intersex activism in response to biopolitical regulations of intersex bodies. Focusing on the emergence of recent autobiographical stories and cultural productions like novels and TV series centering around intersex, Viola Amato provides a first systematic analysis of an activism-triggered resignification of intersex.

    Reveals the troubling intimacy between Black women and the making of US global powerThe year 1968 marked both the height of the worldwide Black liberation struggle and a turning point for the global reach of American power, which was built on the counterinsurgency honed on Black and other oppressed populations at home. The next five decades saw the consolidation of the culture of the American empire through what Erica R. Edwards calls the “imperial grammars of blackness.”This is a story of state power at its most devious and most absurd, and, at the same time, a literary history of Black feminist radicalism at its most trenchant. Edwards reveals how the long war on terror, beginning with the late–Cold War campaign against organizations like the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and the Black Liberation Army, has relied on the labor and the fantasies of Black women to justify the imperial spread of capitalism. Black feminist writers not only understood that this would demand a shift in racial gendered power, but crafted ways of surviving it. The Other Side of Terror offers an interdisciplinary Black feminist analysis of militarism, security, policing, diversity, representation, intersectionality, and resistance, while discussing a wide array of literary and cultural texts, from the unpublished work of Black radical feminist June Jordan to the memoirs of Condoleezza Rice to the television series Scandal. With clear, moving prose, Edwards chronicles Black feminist organizing and writing on “the other side of terror”, which tracked changes in racial power, transformed African American literature and Black studies, and predicted the crises of our current era with unsettling accuracy.

    In the seventeenth century the ancient hope for the physical resurrection of the body and its flesh began an unexpected second life as critical theory, challenging the notion of an autonomous self and driving early modern avant-garde poetry. As an emerging empirical scientific world view and a rising Cartesian dualist ontology transformed the ancient hope for the resurrection of the flesh into the fantasy of a soul or mind living on separately from any body, literature complicated the terms of the debate. Such poets as Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, and Jonson picked up the discarded idea of the resurrection of the flesh and bent it from an apocalyptic future into the here and now to imagine the self already infused with the strange, vibrant materiality of the resurrection body.Fate of the Flesh explores what happens when seventeenth-century poets posit a resurrection body within the historical person. These poets see the resurrection body as the precondition for the social person’s identities and forms of agency and yet as deeply other to all such identities and agencies, an alien within the self that both enables and undercuts life as a social person. This perspective leads seventeenth-century poets to a compelling awareness of the unsettling materiality within the heart of the self and allows them to re-imagine agency, selfhood, and the natural world in its light. By developing a poetics that seeks a deranging materiality within the self, these poets anticipate twentieth-century “avant-garde” poetics. They frame their poems neither as simple representation nor as beautiful objects but as a form of social praxis that creates new communities of readers and writers assembled around a new experience of self-as-body mediated by poetry.

    First published in 1932, A Scarlet Pansy is an extraordinarily vivid and richly textured depiction of American queer life in the early twentieth century, tracing the coming-of-age of androgynous Fay Etrange. Born in small-town Pennsylvania and struggling with her difference, Fay eventually accepts her gender and sexualnonconformity and immerses herself in the fairy subculture of New York City. A self-proclaimed “oncer”—never tricking with same man twice—she immerses herself in the nightclubs, theaters, and street life of the city, cavorting with kindred spirits including female impersonators, streetwalkers, and hustlers as well as other fairies and connoisseurs of rough trade. While reveling in these exploits she becomes a successful banker and later attends medical school, where she receives training in obstetrics. There she also develops her life’s ambition to find a cure for gonorrhea, a disease supposedly “fastened on mankind as a penalty for enjoying love.”A Scarlet Pansy stands apart from similar fiction of its time—as well as that of the ensuing decades—by celebrating rather than pathologizing its effeminate and sexually adventurous protagonist. In this edition, republished for the first time in its original unexpurgated form, Robert J. Corber examines the way in which it flew in the face of other literature of the time in its treatment of gender expression and same-sex desire. We witness Sade learning about the lives of Roman emperors, the machinations and misdeeds of pontiffs, the power struggles of the Medici, the ancient libertine world revealed by the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and a host of artistic examples and cultural practices – the material he would soon metamorphose into trenchant satire, gothic horror, and violent sexual fantasy. This book presents the first English translation of Sade’s unfinished and unpolished Journey to Italy along with his extensive dossiers of notations, sketches, plans, and correspondence. The translation is accompanied by extensive explanatory annotations and preceded by a critical introduction that provides biographical, artistic, historical, and intellectual context for Sade’s fascinating project, connecting his travels in and writings about Italy to his later famous and controversial works.

    Mit »Constructing Intersex« liegt die erste Biographieforschung mit intergeschlechtlichen Menschen im deutschsprachigen Raum vor. Auf Basis von Interviews stellt Anja Gregor heraus, welche schwerwiegenden Folgen bestimmte medizinische Pathologisierungs- und Zurichtungspraktiken für die Biographien der Betroffenen haben. Sie zeigt: Die soziale Konstruktion von Intergeschlechtlichkeit als zugleich tabuisiertem und medizinisch hochrelevantem Phänomen ist nicht nur auf der medizinisch-praktischen Ebene von Ambivalenzen und Verwerfungen geprägt. They demonstrate the stylistic and thematic range of her work and cover diverse topics, including 'outsiderism', gender, sexuality, race, class, religion, the supernatural and the First World War. Together, these texts shed a new light on unrecognised or misunderstood aspects of Hall's intellectual world.     Sexualität als Brennpunkt des Konflikts zwischen Kontrolle und Freiheit ist ein Schlüsselthema in den frühen Romanen der amerikanischen Postmoderne. Magda Majewska beleuchtet den Zusammenhang zwischen experimenteller literarischer Praxis, Kulturkritik und Sexualität am Beispiel von Thomas Pynchons Gravity's Rainbow und William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Dabei rekonstruiert sie das Verhältnis von Trieb und Kultur in den beiden Romanen vor dem Hintergrund freudomarxistischer Diskurse der sexuellen Befreiung und ihrer Bedeutung für die amerikanische Gegenkultur. Erst diese ideengeschichtliche Einbettung erlaubt es, die Welthaltigkeit und politische Stoßkraft des postmodernen Romans offenzulegen.

Sie veröffentlichte dreizehn sexualpolitische Bücher, die bis heute als emanzipativ und wissenschaftlich innovativ gelten. Rodríguez' Forderungen waren in vielerlei Hinsicht durchaus radikal. Doch der hervorragende Ruf der Schriften beruht primär auf der textuellen wie öffentlichen Inszenierung der Autorin als wissenschaftliches Wunderkind und nicht auf der tatsächlich eher zweifelhaften Qualität der Texte. This edited collection brings together essays on affect and narrative theory with a focus on the topics of gender and sexuality. It explores the power of narrative in literature, film, art, performance, and mass media, the construction of subjectivities of gender and sexuality, and the role of affect in times of crisis. By combining theoretical, literary, and analytical texts, the contributors offer methodological impulses and reflect on the possibilities and limitations of affect theory in cultural studies.
