    Ein Teil der Soziologie will sich seit jeher von jeglicher Einmischung in die Praxis distanzieren, ein anderer Teil in die Gesellschaft hineinwirken. Im ersten Fall begreift die Soziologie sich als Wissenschaft, die von Außen auf die Gesellschaft schaut. Im zweiten Fall kann sie sich ihrer Zugehörigkeit zur Gesellschaft nicht entziehen. Was jedoch bedeuten diese vermeintlich widersprüchlichen Ziele für Soziolog*innen und was sagt das über das Fach selbst aus? Natalie Mevissen untersucht das Verhältnis der Soziologie zur Gesellschaft mit Hilfe hermeneutischer Interviewanalysen und formuliert zugleich Bedingungen für eine theoretisch wie methodologisch fundierte Wissenschaftssoziologie der Soziologie. Sie plädiert für einen Perspektivwechsel: weg von einem Problemdiskurs hin zu einer Perspektive der Wahlverwandtschaft der Soziologie mit der Gesellschaft.

    Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit Rückkehrerzählungen, denen eine gewaltvolle Vertreibung vorausliegt. Solche Erfahrungen wirken sich wesentlich auf die Ästhetik der Narrationen aus. Die acht untersuchten Erzählungen befragen (Un-)Möglichkeiten der Rückkehr aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Texte, deren Hintergrund die nationalsozialistische Vertreibungspolitik bildet, werden mit aktuellen Erzählungen in Verbindung gesetzt. In vier thematischen Sektionen (u.a. Rückkehr aus dem Exil, aus dem Lager sowie nach Palästina/Israel) wird gezeigt, dass die Rückkehr ähnliche Erzählmuster hervorbringt sowie Vorstellungen von Heimat und Ursprünglichkeit problematisiert.

    This open access book contributes to the discourse of Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) from an African perspective. It is a unique collection that brings together prominent AI scholars to discuss AI ethics from theoretical and practical African perspectives and makes a case for African values, interests, expectations and principles to underpin the design, development and deployment (DDD) of AI in Africa. The book is a first in that it pays attention to the socio-cultural contexts of Responsible AI that is sensitive to African cultures and societies. It makes an important contribution to the global AI ethics discourse that often neglects AI narratives from Africa despite growing evidence of DDD in many domains. Nine original contributions provide useful insights to advance the understanding and implementation of Responsible AI in Africa, including discussions on epistemic injustice of global AI ethics, opportunities and challenges, an examination of AI co-bots and chatbots in an African work space, gender and AI, a consideration of African philosophies such as Ubuntu in the application of AI, African AI policy, and a look towards a future of Responsible AI in Africa. Damian Okaibedi Eke is Research Fellow at the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR) at De Montfort University, UK. Dr Eke is the Data Governance coordinator for the EU Human Brain Project. His research interests cover critical philosophical issues at the intersection of Technology, Data and Society including; Data Governance, Ethics of Emerging Technologies, Responsible Innovation and ICT4D. Dr. Kutoma Wakunuma is Associate Professor in Information Systems at De Montfort University within the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility. Her research interests cover social and ethical implications of current and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence in the developed and developing world. She is also European Commission Independent Ethics Expert. Dr. Simisola Akintoye is a Senior Lecturer in Law at De Montfort University Centre for Law, Justice and Society. She is an International Privacy Practitioner, Data Protection Consultant and the Data Protection Officer for the EU Human Brain Project. Her research involves legal regulation of emerging technologies at national and international levels.

    Technologies of Feminist Speculative Fiction: Gender, Artificial Life, and the Politics of Reproduction explores how much technology has reshaped feminist conversations in the decades since Donna Haraway's influential "Cyborg Manifesto" was published. With sections exploring reproductive technologies, new ways of imagining femininity and motherhood via artificial means, queer readings of gender as a social technology, and posthuman visions of a world beyond gender, this book demonstrates how feminist speculative fiction offers an urgently needed response to the intersections of women's bodies and technology.     This handbook illustrates the evolution of literature and science, in collaboration and contestation, across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The essays it gathers question the charged rhetoric that pits science against the humanities while also demonstrating the ways in which the convergence of literary and scientific approaches strengthens cultural analyses of colonialism, race, sex, labor, state formation, and environmental destruction. The broad scope of this collection explores the shifting relations between literature and science that have shaped our own cultural moment, sometimes in ways that create a problematic hierarchy of knowledge and other times in ways that encourage fruitful interdisciplinary investigations, innovative modes of knowledge production, and politically charged calls for social justice. Across units focused on epistemologies, techniques and methods, ethics and politics, and forms and genres, the chapters address problems ranging across epidemiology and global health, genomics and biotechnology, environmental and energy sciences, behaviorism and psychology, physics, and computational and surveillance technologies.     Energy, Ecocriticism, and Nineteenth-Century Fiction: Novel Ecologies draws on energy concepts to revisit some of our favorite books-Mansfield Park, Jane Eyre, Great Expectations, and The War of the Worlds-and the ways these shape our sense of ourselves as ecological beings. Barri J. Gold regards the laws of thermodynamics not solely as a set of physical principles, but also as a cultural and conceptual form that we can use to reimagine our historically vexed relationship to the natural world. Beginning with an examination of the parallel inceptions of energy and ecology in the mid-nineteenth century, this book considers the question of how we may better read and interpret our world, developing a recipe for experimental reading and insisting upon the importance of literary studies in a world driving to ecological catastrophe. .

Im ersten Fall begreift die Soziologie sich als Wissenschaft, die von Außen auf die Gesellschaft schaut. Im zweiten Fall kann sie sich ihrer Zugehörigkeit zur Gesellschaft nicht entziehen. Was jedoch bedeuten diese vermeintlich widersprüchlichen Ziele für Soziolog*innen und was sagt das über das Fach selbst aus? Natalie Mevissen untersucht das Verhältnis der Soziologie zur Gesellschaft mit Hilfe hermeneutischer Interviewanalysen und formuliert zugleich Bedingungen für eine theoretisch wie methodologisch fundierte Wissenschaftssoziologie der Soziologie. Sie plädiert für einen Perspektivwechsel: weg von einem Problemdiskurs hin zu einer Perspektive der Wahlverwandtschaft der Soziologie mit der Gesellschaft.

Dabei wird die Philosophie Heideggers genauso weitergedacht wie jene, des arabischen Philosophen al-Farabi aus dem zehnten Jahrhundert. Wesentliches Resultat der Überlegungen ist, dass sich Erkenntnis nicht durch Wissenschaft allein gewinnen lässt und Wahrheit sich erst durch Kunst erweist. Die Aufsatzsammlung folgt daher einer Dramaturgie, die absichtsvoll den Regeln der aristotelischen Poetik entspricht. Es folgt: Wissenschafter sollten auch Dichter sein. Diese Möglichkeit wird im zweiten Teil des Bandes mithilfe einer unüblich poetischen Sprache demonstriert.
