    Die Instrumentalisierung literarischer Übersetzungen für machtpolitische Zwecke ist kein neues Phänomen. Die Asymmetrie der Übersetzungsströme und Transferrichtungen von Übersetzungen verdeutlicht die hierarchische Struktur des globalen Literaturmarktes. Ein Beispiel dafür ist die türkische Literatur: 2005 hat sich die Stoßrichtung der türkischen Übersetzungsförderung umgekehrt – vom Inland ins Ausland. Ob der staatlich geförderte Literatur-, Kunst- und Kulturexport geeignet ist, die Zahl und Transferrichtung von Übersetzungen zwischen der Türkei und dem Ausland zu beeinflussen, und inwiefern die so unterstützten Texte einen anderen Platz auf dem Literaturmarkt einnehmen als nicht geförderte Werke, untersucht Simge Yılmaz im türkisch-deutschen Kontext. Dank qualitativer Feldforschung hat sie teils überraschende Erkenntnisse zu den Macht- und Dominanzverhältnissen bei – privat oder staatlich – initiierten bzw. geförderten Übersetzungen erlangt. Biographical note: Simge Yılmaz ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Germanistik sowie an der Fachrichtung für Übersetzen und Dolmetschen der Ege- Universität/Izmir gewesen und hat 2018 ebenda promoviert. Schwerpunkte ihres wissenschaftlichen Interesses sind veröffentlichte Übersetzungen literarischer Werke, Publikationstätigkeiten sowie die türkische Literatur in deutscher Übersetzung.

    The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes steht das Werk des türkischen Autors und Übersetzers aus dem Deutschen Sabahattin Ali, der mit seinem Roman Kürk Mantolu Madonna (Die Madonna im Pelzmantel) zu posthumem Ruhm gelangte. Der Roman, der zum Großteil in Deutschland spielt, und andere seiner Werke werden unter Aspekten der Weltliteratur, (kultureller) Übersetzung und Intertextualität diskutiert. Damit reicht der Fokus weit über die bislang im Vordergrund stehende interkulturelle Liebesgeschichte in der Madonna hinaus. Weitere Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit Zafer Şenocaks Essaysammlung Deutschsein und dem transkulturellen Lernen mit Bilderbüchern. Ein Interview mit Selim Özdoğan rundet diese Ausgabe ab.

    The fields of comparative and world literature tend to have a unidirectional, Eurocentric focus, with attention to concepts of “origin” and “arrival.” DisOrientations challenges this viewpoint. Kristin Dickinson employs a unique multilingual archive of German and Turkish translated texts from the early nineteenth through the mid-twentieth century. In this analysis, she reveals the omnidirectional and transtemporal movements of translations, which, she argues, harbor the disorienting potential to reconfigure the relationships of original to translation, past to present, and West to East. Through the work of three key figures—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schrader, and Sabahattin Ali—Dickinson develops a concept of translational orientation as a mode of omnidirectional encounter. She sheds light on translations that are not bound by the terms of economic imperialism, Orientalism, or Westernization, focusing on case studies that work against the basic premises of containment and originality that undergird Orientalism’s system of discursive knowledge production. By linking literary traditions across retroactively applied periodizations, the translations examined in this book act as points of connection that produce new directionalities and open new configurations of a future German-Turkish relationship.Groundbreaking and erudite, DisOrientations examines literary translation as a complex mode of cultural, political, and linguistic orientation. This book will appeal to scholars and students of translation theory, comparative literature, Orientalism, and the history of German-Turkish cultural relations.
