This book affords new perspectives on urban disasters in the ancient Roman context, attending not just to the material and historical realities of such events, but also to the imaginary and literary possibilities offered by urban disaster as a figure of thought. Existential threats to the ancient city took many forms, including military invasions, natural disasters, public health crises, and gradual systemic collapses brought on by political or economic factors. In Roman cities, the memory of such events left lasting imprints on the city in psychological as well as in material terms. Individual chapters explore historical disasters and their commemoration, but others also consider of the effect of anticipated and imagined catastrophes. They analyze the destruction of cities both as a threat to be forestalled, and as a potentially regenerative agent of change, and the ways in which destroyed cities are revisited — and in a sense, rebuilt— in literary and social memory. The contributors to this volume seek to explore the Roman conception of disaster in terms that are not exclusively literary or historical. Instead, they explore the connections between and among various elements in the assemblage of experiences, texts, and traditions touching upon the theme of urban disasters in the Roman world

This standard work of classical scholarship, which has been translated into numerous languages, follows the development of Latin literature from its beginnings through the sixth century CE. For this new edition, The History of Roman Literature been revised and its bibliography expanded. Thanks to its systematic structure and extensive index, the book can either be read from cover to cover or used as a reference work. Though it is organized chronologically, with sections on every era of Latin literature, it also devotes several chapters to different literary genres. The book also pays special attention to the influence of classical texts on European writers, artists, and thinkers from the Middle Ages to today. Both scholarly and accessible, The History of Roman Literature is a useful tool for students and professors as well as for anyone interested in European culture and its roots in antiquity

This book affords new perspectives on urban disasters in the ancient Roman context, attending not just to the material and historical realities of such events, but also to the imaginary and literary possibilities offered by urban disaster as a figure of thought. Breviaries, brief accounts of Roman history, are the main element of the historiographical output of the second half of the 4th century AD. The knowledge they contain reflects the various needs for information of people who were at the crossroads of classical education and Christianity. The "ancient Romans" were still important for Christian identity. This study on the culture of history provides a detailed evaluation of breviaries and their reception from the points of view of social and intellectual history. The life and deeds of Gnaeus Iulius Agricola ? governor of the Roman province of Britannia under the Flavian emperors ? are best retold by his son-in-law, Tacitus. Tacitus describes not only the successful Romancampaigns in Britannia, but also the characteristics of the country. Thus, his Agricola is one of most elemental sources for the study of the history andinner structure of this northernmost Roman province.
