    Die zwischen 1860 und 1870 vollendete politische Einigung Italiens ist in der historiographischen Literatur aus den Jahrzehnten davor ideologisch vorbereitet worden. Einen entscheidenden Beitrag dazu leistet der sogenannte romanzo storico risorgimentale. Hierbei handelt es sich um einen Romantyp, der seit etwa 1820 von italienischen Autoren nach dem Muster der historischen Romane eines Sir Walter Scott ausgebildet worden ist. Mit diesem Romantyp hält das in anderen europäischen Ländern schon bekannte Phänomen der Massenliteratur auch in Italien seinen Einzug. Insofern spielt der romanzo storico risorgimentale eine Schlüsselrolle für die Modernisierung des italienischen Literatursystems. Die meisten der etwa siebzig behandelten Romane sind durch eine im Vergleich zu dem Scott'schen Modell forcierte Melodramatik gekennzeichnet. Indem sie auch dem nichtgelehrten Teil des italienischen Publikums ideologische Paradigmen aus der nationalen Geschichte nahebringen, über die sich alle Italiener als Teil einer homogenen historischen Schicksalsgemeinschaft erfahren können, erfüllen sie eine patriotische Propagandafunktion. Auch Alessandro Manzonis Roman »I promessi sposi« von 1827 ist diesem Funktionszusammenhang entsprungen; andererseits wird die progressive Differenzqualität des Werkes gerade durch eine Interpretation deutlich, die es in das gattungsgeschichtliche Umfeld zurückführt, aus dem es hervorgegangen ist

    Die zwischen 1860 und 1870 vollendete politische Einigung Italiens ist in der historiographischen Literatur aus den Jahrzehnten davor ideologisch vorbereitet worden. Einen entscheidenden Beitrag dazu leistet der sogenannte romanzo storico risorgimentale. Hierbei handelt es sich um einen Romantyp, der seit etwa 1820 von italienischen Autoren nach dem Muster der historischen Romane eines Sir Walter Scott ausgebildet worden ist. Mit diesem Romantyp hält das in anderen europäischen Ländern schon bekannte Phänomen der Massenliteratur auch in Italien seinen Einzug. Insofern spielt der romanzo storico risorgimentale eine Schlüsselrolle für die Modernisierung des italienischen Literatursystems. Die meisten der etwa siebzig behandelten Romane sind durch eine im Vergleich zu dem Scott'schen Modell forcierte Melodramatik gekennzeichnet. Indem sie auch dem nichtgelehrten Teil des italienischen Publikums ideologische Paradigmen aus der nationalen Geschichte nahebringen, über die sich alle Italiener als Teil einer homogenen historischen Schicksalsgemeinschaft erfahren können, erfüllen sie eine patriotische Propagandafunktion. Auch Alessandro Manzonis Roman »I promessi sposi« von 1827 ist diesem Funktionszusammenhang entsprungen; andererseits wird die progressive Differenzqualität des Werkes gerade durch eine Interpretation deutlich, die es in das gattungsgeschichtliche Umfeld zurückführt, aus dem es hervorgegangen ist
