Doch tatsächlich sah sie sich massiv von »Schmutz und Schund« bedroht - sowohl seitens des Naturalismus und der Avantgarde, wie auch von den massenhaft verbreiteten Kolportageromanen. Lars Rosenbaum zeichnet diese Konflikte und ihre Vorgeschichte im »langen 19. Jahrhundert« erstmals systematisch nach. Er analysiert die Semantik des Schmutzes in ästhetischen und literarischen Diskursen, in der Reinlichkeitserziehung, in Theorie und Praxis der Hygiene und in der bürgerlichen Konversationskultur. So macht sein literaturgeschichtlicher Überblick die »Verschmutzung« der literarischen Moderne verständlich und liefert gleichzeitig eine Geschichte populistischer Debatten um 1900 auf dem Feld der Literatur.

    "To this day, the history of international law is dominated by a Eurocentric historiography in which non-European worlds play a passive role at best. Master narratives of universalisation and progress may include their histories; however, they appear not in the form of actors, but as mere receivers. By analysing the first Hispano-American textbook on international law, this transdisciplinary study questions this narrative of passivity. In his compendium, published in 1833, the Chilean polymath Andrés Bello translated European doctrines of international law for use in the context of the “New World”. Using a postcolonial approach, the study demonstrates that the imitation of the European discourse on international law was not a purely passive and submissive act, but deeply ambivalent behaviour which opens up a space for resistance and is reminiscent of Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of mimicry."

Jahrhundert Teil dieser Meistererzählung.Diese transdisziplinäre Studie versucht anhand der ersten Völkerrechtslehre Hispanoamerikas dieses Narrativ der Passivität neu zu denken. Der chilenische Universalgelehrte Andrés Bello übersetzte in diesem Kompendium von 1833 die europäischen Lehren für die „Neue Welt“. Aufbauend auf einer postkolonialen Perspektive wird gezeigt, dass die Nachahmung des europäischen Völkerrechtsdiskurses mehr ist als ein rein passives und unterwürfiges Verhalten. Vielmehr eröffnet sich in diesem grundlegend ambivalenten Prozess ein Widerstandsraum, in dem Bedeutung zu jedem Zeitpunkt neu verhandelt wird und der an Homi K. Bhabhas Konzept der Mimikry erinnert.
