    In the years between the Harlem Renaissance and World War II, African American playwrights gave birth to a vital black theater movement in the U.S. It was a movement overwhelmingly concerned with the role of religion in black identity. In a time of profound social transformation fueled by a massive migration from the rural south to the urban-industrial centers of the north, scripts penned by dozens of black playwrights reflected cultural tensions, often rooted in class, that revealed competing conceptions of religion's role in the formation of racial identity.Black playwrights pointed in quite different ways toward approaches to church, scripture, belief, and ritual that they deemed beneficial to the advancement of the race. Their plays were important not only in mirroring theological reflection of the time, but in helping to shape African American thought about religion in black communities. The religious themes of these plays were in effect arguments about the place of religion in African American lives.In Staging Faith, Craig R. Prentiss illuminates the creative strategies playwrights used to grapple with religion. With a lively and engaging style, the volume brings long forgotten plays to life as it chronicles the cultural and religious fissures that marked early twentieth century African American society.Craig R. Prentiss is Professor of Religious Studies at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.     Secular criticism is a term invented by Edward Said to denote not a theory but a practice that counters the tendency of much modern thinking to reach for a transcendentalist comfort zone, the very space philosophy wrested away from religion in the name of modernity. Using this notion as a compass, this book reconfigures recent secularism debates on an entirely different basis, by showing (1) how the secular imagination is closely linked to society’s radical poiesis, its capacity to imagine and create unprecedented forms of worldly existence; and (2) how the space of the secular animates the desire for a radical democratic politics that overturns inherited modes of subjugation, whether religious or secularist.Gourgouris’s point is to disrupt the co-dependent relation between the religious and the secular—hence, his rejection of fashionable languages of postsecularism—in order to engage in a double critique of heteronomous politics of all kinds. For him, secular criticism is a form of political being: critical, antifoundational, disobedient, anarchic, yet not negative for negation’s sake but creative of new forms of collective reflection, interrogation, and action that alter not only the current terrain of dominant politics but also the very self-conceptualization of what it means to be human.Written in a free and combative style and given both to close readings of texts and to gazing off into the broad horizon, these essays cover a range of issues—historical and philosophical, archaic and contemporary, literary and political—that ultimately converge in the significance of contemporary radical politics: the assembly movements we have seen in various parts of the world in recent years. The secular imagination demands a radical pedagogy and unlearning a great many established thought patterns. Its most important dimension is not battling religion per se but dismantling theological politics of sovereignty in favor of radical conditions for social autonomy

    Der Hadith ist nach dem Koran die zweit­wich­tigste schrift­liche Quelle der isla­mi­schen Reli­gion. Seine authen­ti­sche Über­lie­fe­rung und ange­mes­sene Inter­pre­ta­tion bilden die Haupt­themen der Hadith­wis­sen­schaft. In der tradi­tio­nellen Hadith­wis­sen­schaft sind hierzu zwei unter­schied­liche Heran­ge­hens­weisen zu konsta­tieren. Die tradi­tio­na­lis­ti­sche Schule legte grund­sätz­li­chen Wert darauf, die Authen­ti­zität der Hadithe an die Glaub­wür­dig­keit der Über­lie­ferer und die rich­tige Inter­pre­ta­tion an die arabi­sche Gram­matik zu binden. Die teleo­lo­gi­sche Schule setzte über­dies die Text­kritik und Kontex­t­ua­li­sie­rung voraus. Der Autor analy­siert die Gedan­ken­struktur der beiden Ausrich­tungen anhand zahl­rei­cher Text­be­lege aus den Primär­qu­ellen und setzt sie mit modernen Ansätzen der Anka­raner Schule in Bezie­hung. Er pläd­iert dafür, die moderne Hadith-Herme­neutik an diese bis heute wenig beach­tete sinn- und zwec­k­o­ri­en­tierte Gelehr­sam­keit in der tradi­tio­nellen Hadith­wis­sen­schaft anzu­knüpfen und sieht dabei die Ansätze der Anka­raner Schule als ein gelun­genes Beispiel an

    Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815–1905) studierte in Leipzig Theologie und orientalische Sprachen. Als er sich 1846 an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin habilitierte, beherrschte er neben Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch auch Hebräisch, Aramäisch, Arabisch, Persisch und Türkisch. Bis 1848 hielt er als Privatdozent Vorlesungen über orientalische Literatur. Als erster preußischer Konsul nahm Wetzstein vom Januar 1849 bis Februar 1861 politische Interessen Preußens in Damaskus wahr und versuchte, den Handel zwischen Syrien und Preußen sowie den Zollvereinsstaaten zu fördern. Da seine Stelle unbesoldet war, musste Wetzstein seine Familie und das sehr aufwendige Leben im Orient selbst finanzieren. Aus diesem Grund erwarb er Anteile an zwei Dörfern in der Guta, durch deren Aufbau er hoffte, Geld verdienen zu können, was dann aber an den politischen Zuständen im osmanischen Syrien scheiterte. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Berlin setzte er von 1865–1875 seine Lehrtätigkeit fort. Wetzstein hatte wertvolle Handschriftensammlungen erworben, die er den Universitäten Berlin, Leipzig und Tübingen verkaufte. Mit etlichen Berichten hinterließ dieser engagierte Orientalist und Diplomat interessante und aufschlussreiche Zeitdokumente über seinen Aufenthalt in Syrien. In seinem privaten Nachlass wurde der sprachwissenschaftlich höchst interessante Entwurf einer Übersetzung der ersten elf Suren des Koran gefunden, der hier möglichst werkgetreu vorgestellt wird
