"Individuals in the post-Communist Ukraine dealt with a political climate of stalled reforms and corruption, leading to a mass distrust of many political institutions. This had a demobilizing effect on a citizen's sense of capacity to effect social change. Therefore, the emergence of any individual to become an activist and involved in protest movements was a remarkable feat. So how does an individual become an activist in such a climate? This book explains how socio-cultural experiences shape an individual's choices to become an activist in the authoritarian space of post-Soviet Ukraine by applying a cultural, actor-centred approach using qualitative methods of interviews and ethnography. The goal is to better understand the dynamics of individual decision-making between participants in collective protest actions under repressive conditions from the State using biographical narratives. The book covers multiple discussions with five young activists involved in the three largest protest events since Ukrainian independence in 1991: the Ukraine without Kuchma Movement of 2000-2001, the Orange Revolution of 2004, and the Euromaidan protests of 2014. This is valuable reading for students and researchers interested in political sociology, social movements and Ukrainian politics, and how these Ukrainian protests can be related to wider European political movements"...Provided by publisher

Marching to the beat of punk rock and reggae, Rock Against Racism was a mass movement built in opposition to racism and fascism in 1970s Britain. At a time of severe economic and social crises, RAR, alongside the Anti-Nazi League, organised one of the biggest and most effective political and cultural mobilisations of the post-war period. Expressing itself through spectacular carnivals, concerts, marches and innovative forms of design and communication, RAR combined hard-headed political organisation with the optimism and energy of radical youth culture. Drawing on interviews with activists, supp

The photobook "A Mesma Luta" (The Same Fight) comprises 25 black and white photographs of social movements in São Paulo from 1978 to 1984. Photographer Rosa Gauditano (São Paulo, Brasil 1955) documented the ABC strikes, the Custo de Vida (Cost of Living) movement, women's demonstrations such as the murder of Eliane de Grammount, SOS Mulher, the 3 Congresses of the Paulista Woman, the protest of the Mothers of The Plaza de Mayo, the first demonstrations of the Unified Black Movement and the demonstration against the murder of the metallurgist Santo Dias by the police. The edition of this work is focused on this women's struggles and its important role for the change of Brazilian society that culminated in the end of the dictatorship from Diretas Já. Author Rosa Gauditano began her career as a photographer in the 1970s, working for small printing houses from the Imprensa Nanica (journalists who wrote against the ideas of the dictatorship, it was so called because few were the ones who dared to write something against the government given the strong repression), taht include Versus, Movimento and Em Tempo. Later she worked as a hired photographer for Folha de São Paulo and Veja magazine until she founded Studio R where she continues to work to this day.

Is there an option to oppose without automatically participating in the opposed? This volume explores different perspectives on dissent, understanding practices, cultures, and theories of resistance, dispute, and opposition as inherently participative. It discusses aspects of the body as a political instance, the identity and subjectivity building of individuals and groups, (micro-)practices of dissent, and theories of critique from different disciplinary perspectives. This collection thus touches upon contemporary issues, recent protests and movements, artistic subversion and dissent, online activism as well as historic developments and elemental theories of dissent

In October 2014, Lele Saveri was in Hong Kong when thousands of people, guided by a group of students, took to the streets to demonstrate against electoral reform: what would go down in history as the "Umbrella Revolution" was underway. Saveri was there by chance, but he immediately realised that he was standing before a historic event. He moves through the streets, coming into contact with people, shooting photographs. The barricades, put up using temporary fencing and various objects, strike him in particular by virtue of their structure: they are the symbol of the determination and resistance of the demonstrators, the image of a protest which does not burn out in a single season but which is still alive today. Along with the text by Joshua Wong (leader of the movement, shortlisted for the Nobel Peace Prize 2017), the photographs gathered in this volume tell of the genesis of a struggle for democratisation and emancipation, and more in general, against oppression.
