    È del 1828 l’editio princeps di Endlicher del P.(anegirico) di P.(risciano), di cui Denis nel 1799 aveva reso noti pochi versi. A due ristampe dell’ed. princeps (Niebuhr 1829, Corpet 1845) seguì l’ed. di Baehrens 1883, che fornì il testo per le edd. di Romano 1965, Chauvot 1986 e Coyne 1991. Di tutti questi studiosi solo Endlicher e, qua e là, Denis, Niebuhr e Chauvot esaminarono il cod. A, Napoli, Biblioteca Nazionale, lat. 2 (già Vind. 16), che tramanda il P. ai ff. 50ra-52va scritti a Bobbio nel convento di S. Colombano in minuscola irlandese (fine VII o inizi VIII sec.), essendo stata erasa la precedente semionciale del sec. VI. Baehrens usò pure il cod. B, Bern, Bürgerbibliothek, 363, scritto in minuscola irlandese (2° terzo o fine del sec. IX) a San Gallo o nel nord dell’Italia. B reca solo al f. 195rab i 22 trimetri giambici ‘comici’ di tipo greco della Praefatio e i primi 44 esametri delle Laudes, con omissione del v. 43.- Baehrens non vide né A né B, ma ebbe le collazioni (non prive di sviste) di A da Huemer e di B da Hagen. Con lo studio di A e B Ballaira corregge le precedenti edd. In A e in B ci sono falsae lectiones, all’apparenza inspiegabili. Ora finalmente si è capito che derivano da un antigrafo in visigotica. Il P. di P., portato alla fine del sec. VI da Bisanzio in Spagna e qui ricopiato, dalla Spagna ca. la metà del sec. VII raggiunse via mare l’Irlanda, da dove pervenne a Bobbio e qui si salvò in A, avendo percorso lo stesso lungo itinerario (Bisanzio – Spagna – Irlanda – Europa continentale) seguito dalla recensio Scotica delle Institutiones grammaticae di P.P. sfrutta nel P. l’elogio di Anastasio di Procopio di Gaza (502 d.C.) e narra la guerra isaurica in accordo con Giovanni Antiocheno, la fonte storica più autorevole. Chauvot 1986, Haarer 2006 e Meier 20102, trascurano il testo dell’Antiocheno e a torto giudicano confuso il racconto di P.- Con lo studio per la prima volta completo delle fonti storiche Ballaira data con sicurezza il P. al 514 d.C. e, confrontando il lessico del P. con quello dei poeti e prosatori latini dall’età arcaica al medievo, ha scoperto molti passi, mai individuati in precedenza, imitati da P. Ci sono pure passi di autori medievali di cui P. sembra essere la fonte. P. costruisce bene i suoi versi (sono infondate le critiche di Coyne a Prisc. Anast. 208 e 275), attingendo dagli autori che cita nei testi grammaticali. Dall’Ottocento a oggi gli studiosi (a es. Peerlkamp 1830, Birth 1892, Drath.(schmidt) 1907, Tolkiehn 1912, Helm 1954, Chauvot 1986, Coyne 1991, Nicks 2000, Motta 2003, Schindler 2009) ritengono Claudiano fonte di P. poeta non meno importante di Virgilio, Lucano, Ovidio e Stazio. Peerlkamp, Birth, Drath. e Coyne citano molti versi di Prisc. Anast. e periheg. che credono derivati da Claudiano. Ma l’esame di tutti quei versi di P. li dimostra derivati da altre fonti.-

    A constant feature of Jewish culture in the medieval Mediterranean was the dedication of panegyric texts in Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, and other languages to men of several ranks: scholars, communal leaders, courtiers, merchants, patrons, and poets. Although the imagery of nature and eroticism in the preludes to these poems is often studied, the substance of what follows is generally neglected, as it is perceived to be repetitive, obsequious, and less aesthetically interesting than other types of poetry from the period. In Dominion Built of Praise, Jonathan Decter demurs. As is the case with visual portraits, panegyrics operate according to a code of cultural norms that tell us at least as much about the society that produced them as the individuals they portray. Looking at the phenomenon of panegyric in Mediterranean Jewish culture from several overlapping perspectives—social, historical, ethical, poetic, political, and theological—he finds that they offer representations of Jewish political leadership as it varied across geographic area and evolved over time.Decter focuses his analysis primarily on Jewish centers in the Islamic Mediterranean between the tenth and thirteenth centuries and also includes a chapter on Jews in the Christian Mediterranean through the fifteenth century. He examines the hundreds of panegyrics that have survived: some copied repeatedly in luxurious anthologies, others discarded haphazardly in the Cairo Geniza. According to Decter, the poems extolled conventional character traits ascribed to leaders not only diachronically within the Jewish political tradition but also synchronically within Islamic and, to a lesser extent, Christian civilization and political culture. Dominion Built of Praise reveals more than a superficial and functional parallel between Muslim and Jewish forms of statecraft and demonstrates how ideas of Islamic political legitimacy profoundly shaped the ways in which Jews conceptualized and portrayed their own leadership
