    Der Neuplatoniker Olympiodor (6. Jh. n. Chr.) fand in der Forschung erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten als Philosoph Beachtung. Cagla Umsu-Seifert diskutiert in diesem Band aktuelle Forschungsthesen zu Olympiodor und erklärt die zentralen Aspekte seiner Philosophie. Die Autorin legt darüber hinaus erstmals eine Übersetzung von Olympiodors Kommentar zu Platons Alkibiades ins Deutsche vor, die mit umfangreichen Anmerkungen erläutert wird. Die Philosophie Olympiodors wird dabei im Kontext der platonischen Tradition, der antiken Literatur und anderer Bildungsbereiche wie der Medizin in Alexandria beleuchtet. So bietet der Band eine umfassende Darstellung der Philosophie Olympiodors und zeigt, dass seine Exegese keineswegs hinter der des Proklos zurücksteht, sondern sich durch das pädagogische Ziel und die Aufgabe auszeichnet, die Vorzüge der platonischen Philosophie hervorzuheben.

    This Open Access book looks at Olympiodorus (AD c. 500–570), possibly the last non-Christian teacher of philosophy in Alexandria, who delivered these lectures as an introduction to Plato with a biography. For us, they can serve as an accessible introduction to late Neoplatonism. Olympiodorus locates the First Alcibiades at the start of the curriculum on Plato, because it is about self-knowledge. His pupils are beginners, able to approach the hierarchy of philosophical virtues, like the aristocratic playboy Alcibiades. Alcibiades needs to know himself, at least as an individual with particular actions, before he can reach the virtues of mere civic interaction. As Olympiodorus addresses mainly Christian students, he tells them that the different words they use are often symbols of truths shared between their faiths.     Das westliche philosophische Denken hat sich im Laufe seiner Geschichte unter anderem der wissenschaftlichen Forschung gewidmet. An dieser Front zielt die historisch-philosophische Forschung, unterstützt durch die Philologie, darauf ab, das Konzept der Philosophie als Wissenschaft in der Antike und im Mittelalter zu erhellen. In diesem Sinne trägt die Geschichte der Philosophie in Antike und Mittelalter wesentlich dazu bei, die Bewegung der Ideen, die Methoden und den Gegenstand der rationalen Erkenntnis zu definieren. Der vorliegende Band will einen Beitrag zu diesem Teil der Geschichte des abendländischen Denkens leisten, der zum modernen Europa geführt hat, das sich durch sein Wissen und seine Werte auszeichnet. Giardina | Daniele Iozzia | Ivan Licciardi | Angela Longo | Concetto Martello | Chiara Militello | Diana Quarantotto | Andrea Vella Throughout history, Western philosophical thought has focused on questions of ethics and politics on the one hand. On the other hand, it has pursued rational inquiry with the aim of scientific progress. On this second front, historical-philosophical research, supported by philology, aims to elucidate the concept of philosophy as science in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In this sense, the history of philosophy in Antiquity and the Middle Ages contributes significantly to defining the movement of ideas, methods and the object of rational knowledge. The present volume aims to contribute to this strand of the history of Western thought, which has led to modern Europe, characterised by its knowledge and values.     Der Neuplatoniker Olympiodor (6. Jh. n. Chr.) fand in der Forschung erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten als Philosoph Beachtung. Cagla Umsu-Seifert diskutiert in diesem Band aktuelle Forschungsthesen zu Olympiodor und erklärt die zentralen Aspekte seiner Philosophie. Die Autorin legt darüber hinaus erstmals eine Übersetzung von Olympiodors Kommentar zu Platons Alkibiades ins Deutsche vor, die mit umfangreichen Anmerkungen erläutert wird. Die Philosophie Olympiodors wird dabei im Kontext der platonischen Tradition, der antiken Literatur und anderer Bildungsbereiche wie der Medizin in Alexandria beleuchtet. So bietet der Band eine umfassende Darstellung der Philosophie Olympiodors und zeigt, dass seine Exegese keineswegs hinter der des Proklos zurücksteht, sondern sich durch das pädagogische Ziel und die Aufgabe auszeichnet, die Vorzüge der platonischen Philosophie hervorzuheben.
