    To justify the plundering of today's Democratic Republic of the Congo, U.S. intellectual elites have continuously produced dismissive Congo discourses. Tracing these discourses in great depth and breadth for the first time, Johnny Van Hove shows how U.S. intellectuals (and their influential European counterparts) have been using the Congo in similar fashions for their own goals. Analyzing intellectuals as diverse as W.E.B. Du Bois, Joseph Conrad, and David Van Reybrouck, the book offers a theorization of Central West Africa, a case study of normalized narratives on the "Other", and a stirring wake up call for all contemporary writers on international history and politics.

    Examines some of the varied African literary responses to politics and social justice and injustice under colonialism/neocolonialism. In 1965, Chinua Achebe, in his classic essay "The Novelist as Teacher", declared that the "African past - with all its imperfections - was not one long night of savagery from which the early Europeans acting on God's behalf, delivered them." That assertion included a still reverberating sentiment shared by many of the first generation of African writers that it is possible to reclaim that distorted past creatively in order to show and understand "where andwhen the rain started beating Africa". Many genres and forms of literary and cultural production have recalled and recorded and reconfigured that past - many projecting a new confident African future defined by self-determination. The spectrum of that complex engagement, which encompasses critical issues in politics and social justice, provides the basis of this volume, which concludes with tributes to the life and works of Kofi Awoonor.     In den ruinierten Landschaften einer von Kolonisierung geprägten Welt erscheint Sprache als Vehikel ökonomischer Aneignung und flüchtiger Begegnungen. Anne Storch und Ingo H. Warnke liefern mit ihrem wissenschaftlichen Essay eine Art Tagebuch, eine Feldstudiendokumentation und einen Dialog über ihre Reise von Sylt über Kairo nach Sansibar - und hinterfragen dabei immer weiter den linguistischen Blick ihrer Erfahrungen. Dabei gerät ihr Schreiben ins Stocken und sucht Wege zum Sprechen in der neokolonialen Welt. In Kombination mit einer kritischen Sichtung postkolonialer Arbeiten ist ein Versprechen dabei: die Austreibung aus den Grenzen der Sprachlosigkeit.

    Afghanische basisdemokratische und feministische Akteure äußern deutlich ihren Widerspruch zum externen Peacebuilding - doch sie werden nicht gehört. Ihre Analysen und Ideen werden von Politik und Wissenschaft weitgehend ausgeschlossen. Darin schlägt sich, so kann Mechthild Exo zeigen, die koloniale, epistemische Gewalt in der Weltpolitik nieder. Anschaulich und lebendig stellt sie das »unerwünschte Wissen« von vier afghanischen Organisationen vor, die in der künstlerischen Menschenrechtsarbeit, der feministischen Frauenorganisierung seit den 1970ern mit RAWA, dem Kampf gegen die Straflosigkeit von Kriegsverbrechern beziehungsweise dem besatzungskritischen Aufbau demokratischer Strukturen tätig sind.
