This book intends to examine the films of João Canijo and their ties to representations of national identity. For that purpose, we did a review of literature on Portuguese cultural identity in its diverse dimensions (historical, literary and anthropological), focusing on the importance of Salazar’s ideology and the current identity debates. In the second part of this thesis, we try to analyse eight feature films made by the director, proposing the idea of a dramaturgy of violence, through intertextuality with Greek tragedy and film melodrama, which gives a perspective of a representation of contemporary Portugal, based on a patriarchal society and its violence. We argue the importance of concepts such as non-inscription, by José Gil, or the repressed, by Eduardo Lourenço, to comprehend the films. At last, our analysis debates the issue of realism in cinema, through the prism of contemporary changes suggested by the work of the filmmaker, which fuses fictional and documentary elements. Finally, we suggest a type of dramaturgy of violence in João Canijo’s films that try to question the existing images of Portuguese identity and its cultural representations.

This book combines academic analysis and critical exploration to examine national narratives in the context of tourism and events around the world. It explores how particular narratives are woven to tell (and sell) a national story. By deconstructing images of the nation, it closely examines how national texts create key archival imagery that can promote tourism and events while also shaping national identity. It investigates the complex relationship between state appropriation of marketing strategies and the commercial use of nationalist discourses. The book aims to demystify the ways in which the nation is imagined by key organisers and organisations and then communicated to millions

This project studies collaboration in highly skilled, nationally diverse teams. An unexpected international political conflict makes national diversity more salient among existing and potential team members. I exploit this natural experiment to quantify the role of social, identity-driven, costs for performance and formation of diverse teams. Using microdata from GitHub, the world’s largest hosting platform for software projects, I estimate the causal impacts of a political conflict that burst out between Russia and Ukraine in 2014. I find that the conflict strongly reduced online cooperation between Russian and Ukrainian programmers. The conflict lowered the likelihood that Ukrainian and Russian programmers work in the same team and led to the performance decline of existing joint projects. I provide evidence that the observed effects were not driven by economic considerations. Rather, the conflict activated national identities and shifted programmers’ taste for teammates and projects. My results highlight the role of identity-driven concerns that can distort existing and prevent future collaborations, otherwise profitable from an economic perspective.

Commercial Nationalism Research Directions: Negotiating New National Narratives / White, Leanne -- Index This book combines academic analysis and critical exploration to examine national narratives in the context of tourism and events around the world.

Mostar, Yugoslavia, 1988. Mili, a boy from out of town, dives from the famous Old Bridge. Mina, a local girl, watches. As he falls, she begins falling for him. Mostar, Bosnia, 1992. In a town of growing divisions, Mina and Mili never doubt that their future lies together. But nor can they imagine the dangers that future will bring. Winner of the 2020 Papatango New Writing Prize, Igor Memic's play Old Bridge is an epic love story exploring the impact of a war that Europe forgot, and the love and loss of those who lived through it. It was first produced by Papatango at the Bush Theatre, London, in 2021, directed by Selma Dimitrijevic. Memic went on to win the Most Promising Playwright Award at the 2022 Offies (Off West End Awards), and was also named Most Promising Playwright (jointly with Zadie Smith) at the 2022 Critics' Circle Awards. Old Bridge won the Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre Award at the 2022 Olivier Awards

Afghanistan. It's 2004. Farook and Samia broadcast live every day to the whole of Kabul, delivering ninety minutes of musical bliss: Britney, Backstreet Boys and Enrique Iglesias. But when their show starts to make waves, the two young friends must take on repressive forces to build a new Afghanistan. Inspired by the true story of Afghanistan's first youth music programme, Waleed Akhtar's play Kabul Goes Pop: Music Television Afghanistan explores a world following the US invasion that is complex, contradictory and shocking - all to a soundtrack of early noughties' pop. The play premiered at Brixton House, London, in 2022, directed by Anna Himali Howard, before touring the UK. It was presented with HighTide, in association with Mercury Theatre Colchester

Ukraine 1929. As Stalin launches the first of his Five-Year Plans, a closeknit rural community stands unwittingly in the path of his drive to create a thriving socialist Soviet Union. The outcome is catastrophic. What begins for the people of the village as an amusingly alien concept rapidly becomes an unstoppable force for change. Robbed first of their land, then their religion and independence, the whole country soon becomes engulfed by a tragedy that will scar a nation for generations. Natal'ya Vorozhbit's play The Grain Store was first staged in this English translation by Sasha Dugdale by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, in 2009

When Okumu's village in Northern Uganda is attacked by a guerrilla rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Kony, he and his brother find that their lives are changed forever. Far Gone is a profoundly moving play for one actor which tells the story of a young boy's journey from childhood innocence to child soldier, seen through the eyes of those that love him - and those that betray him. Inspired by John Rwothomack's own real-life experience of nearly being kidnapped by the LRA, the play was co-produced by Roots Mbili Theatre and Sheffield Theatres, with support from Theatre Deli, Sheffield. It premiered at the Crucible Studio, Sheffield, in February 2022, directed by Mojisola Elufowoju, and then toured the UK

This book illustrates that the idea of a ‘national’ literature is profoundly problematic. Chapters on boundaries and crisscrossing show how a nation and its writers’ works do not exist in isolation from their history. Stressing migration and (inter)cultural dialogue, authors explore how the characters in the texts establish a sense of belonging both within the context of migrations and within the context of Lithuania since its independence. The final series of essays in this book discusses Lithuanian literature abroad that is in translation. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Ragaišienė: Irena Ragaišienė, Ph.D., teaches at Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Lithuania. Her recent publications are on identity and displacement in literature of migration. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Rundholz: Adelheid Rundholz, Ph.D., teaches at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC, USA. Her research interests are literature of migration, literary theory, world literature, and translation.
