The early medieval English were far more diverse and better connected to a broader world. Their writings reveal substantial interest in Europe, Asia, and Africa while they situated themselves firmly within Christian Europe. They drew many ideas from textual sources and filled out their conceptions from their own travels and interactions with visitors. Chronicles, histories, poetry, homilies, saints' lives, and occasionally maps tell of peoples and lands from the British Isles to their near neighbors in Scandinavia to such distant places as Jerusalem, North Africa, and India. They also imagined geographies that veered into the fantastic and vividly depicted hell, purgatory, and heaven. This Element provides insights about early medieval English who were engaged deeply in a variety of modes with other parts of their world. Both the connections and the divisions they constructed still have impact today.

Main description: With its groundings in social psychology and linguistics, this study sets out (a) to provide a theoretical characterization of national stereotypes as a topic in literary studies, (b) to cast light on the connections between national stereotypes and the concept of national character from an historical perspective, and (c) to examine examples from 16th to 19th century German and French literature with a view to identifying the functions of national topoi in literature and the way they differ according to text genre and discursive context

Description based on print version record

United Kingdom? : the Celtic and British isles -- Imperial heritage and postcolonial hybridity -- The American melting pot

This book contains a multicultural and multifaceted study of ideologies and conflicts related to the complex realities and fictions of Nation and Identity represented in contemporary literature written in English. The history and present time of the United Kingdom, the British Empire and North America provide vast fields of research which have been explored by our selection of authors. Their interests range from the moral and personal consequences of modern nationalist conflicts to the memories of old racial confrontations on the British soil. Readers will find analyses and reflections on the individual's pursuit of identity in a challenging environment that covers more than two centuries of mainly Western civilization and abound in national dilemmas, social concerns, authoritarian legacies, and problematic postcolonial hybridizations. Short stories, novels, plays and poems by Irish, American, English, Nigerian, and Scottish writers will enable readers to consider the diverse approaches, propositions and debates the issues raised by Nation and Identity are being analyzed

Description based on print version record

Introduction: imagining the continent -- Hybrid gardens: nationalization of taste, travel writing, and Ann Radcliffe's Continental landscape -- The occidentalist costume: Lord Byron and travelers' perspectives on Eastern Europe -- From the prison of the nation: tourism, Anglo-Italian dialogue, and mid-Victorian remapping of Italy -- The mirror image: British travel writing and Bram Stoker's Eastern Europe colonial discourse and the mapping of Eastern Europe in the late nineteenth century -- Postscript "dense Westerners" and persistent peripheries: Edwardian fictions of Europe and beyond

Showing how specific rhetorical strategies used in nineteenth-century British travel writing produced fictional representations of continental Europe in works by Ann Radcliffe, Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, and Bram Stoker, Katarina Gephardt argues that nineteenth-century writers envisioned their country simultaneously as distinct from the Continent and as a part of Europe. She suggests that their imaginative geography of Europe anticipated Britain's ambivalence about European integration

The Destruction of Biserta -- Part Five: From Cosmopolitanism to Isolationism -- 16. Boiardo's Brandimarte across the Continents -- 17. Ariosto's Rinaldo along the Po River

"This study offers a sustained examination of the presentation of eastern Asia, the Middle East, and northern Africa in two of the most important chivalric epics of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato (1495) and Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso (1516). Comparing the narratological strategies used to depict non-European characters in these stories, Jo Ann Cavallo argues that Boiardo's cosmopolitan vision of humankind increasingly became replaced by Ariosto's crusading ideology, which emphasized a binary opposition between Christians and Saracens

Cities are material and symbolic spaces through which nations define their cultural identities. The great cities that have arisen on the North American continent have stimulated the imaginations of the United States and Canada in very different ways. This first comparative study of North American urban fiction starts out by delineating the sociohistorical and literary contexts in which cities grew into diverging symbolic spaces in American and Canadian culture. After an overview of recent developments in the cultural conception of urban space, the book takes New York and Toronto fiction as exemplary for exploring representations of the urban after postmodernism. It analyzes four twenty-first-century novels: two set in New York - Siri Hustvedt's 'What I Loved' and Paule Marshall's 'The Fisher King' - and two set in Toronto - Carol Shields's 'Unless' and Dionne Brand's 'What We All Long For.' While these texts continue to echo the specific traditions of nation building and canon formation in the United States and Canada, they also share certain features. All of them investigate the affective crossroads of the city while returning to a more realistic mode of representation. Caroline Rosenthal is Professor of American Literature at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, Germany
