    Anhand des reichen Sammlungsbestandes von Landschaftsgemälden im Besitz der Stiftung "Kleines Bürgerhaus" hat er die Frage verfolgt, was die Menschen des 19. Jahrhunderts dazu trieb, sich in ihren Wohnungen insbesondere mit Alpenbildern zu umgeben. Tieferes Eindringen in die dahinter stehenden Vorstellungen und Entscheidungen offenbart auch politische Dimensionen, die wohl vielfach unbewusst die in die Berge Reisenden und die hiervon zeugenden Bilder bewegten. Man wollte in der wilden Landschaft ursprüngliche Natur, gerechtere Welten und erstrebenswerte gesellschaftliche Strukturen sehen, projizierte auf die Berge und Täler und die dort lebenden Menschen eine körperlich und geistig gesundere Gegen-Welt eine erstaunliche Parallele zu heutigen gesellschaftlichen Prozessen. Das breite Spektrum der diese Landschaften dokumentierenden Bilder unterschiedlichster Qualität ist nicht nur Ausdruck der differenzierten wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten der Käufer, sondern auch der Aufgaben von Kunst. Diese reichen vom günstigen und seriell erzeugten kleinen Souvenir bis zur eigenständigen, nicht selten großformatigen Komposition. Letztere wurde von den Künstlern zwar als individuelle Leistung verstanden und in Ausstellungen präsentiert, gelangte aber auch in den Kunsthandel und in der Regel an eine private Wand, diente darüber hinaus als Vorlage für einfachere und günstigere Bilder denn auch der Künstler musste leben. Das Wechselspiel zwischen Vorlage und Übernahme, Erwartung und Projektion wird an eindringlichen Beispielen belegt. Die Frage nach der Wahrnehmung von Wirklichkeit vor Ort und ihrer Abbildung verleiht dem Begriff der Realität neue Dimensionen.

    "Artificial mountains are a worldwide reality. Their presence influenced the history of urbanism, architecture, and landscape architecture. Burial sites use, very frequently, the intimidating shape of the man-made mountain. Incense burners in ancient China evoked the Five Sacred Mountains. Mount Parnassus in Greece became an important element in European garden history and a symbol of the Renaissance. In the Baroque Rome of the 17th century the most important artists worked on the constructions of huge ephemeral mounds in order to express more or less codified messages. The model of the artificial mountain was used as well during the French Revolution: the famous celebration of the Supreme Being took place on a gigantic faux mountain. The history of landscape architecture is characterized by the construction of architectural mounds, often built by using local excavation material. The industrial revolution acted as another source for the rise of an anthropic topography, creating forms, which we do not recognize anymore as totally artificial. Architects have found in the form of mountains a model and a gestalt with which to play in an ironic way. In twentieth-century art, mountains are ubiquitous, culminating in Robert Smithson’s masterful exploration of reversed, displaced, and rebuilt mountains. Michael Jakob’s comparative study is the first one to address this fascinating phenomenon."--Back cover

    The Mountains in Art History' is the first English-language work to focus on the mountains as subject matter and source of aesthetic and spiritual inspiration for painters. This collection of original essays is written entirely by Wesleyan University students of art history. The essays examine how artistic representation of mountains has varied through the lens of specific depictions in English and American literature, and consider how images of mountains functioned in conjunction with religion, the sublime, and Romanticism. These essays by student authors adeptly ruminate on works by individuals such as William Wordsworth, John Frederick Kensett, Alexander van Humboldt, Emil Nolde, and Arnold Fanck. Né à Besançon et formé aux Beaux-Arts, il s'installa à Chamonix en 1936 et ne quitta plus la vallée, laissant à la postérité plus de 4 000 oeuvres : paysages de montagne, pastorales..., sans oublier les innombrables parterres sauvages d'anémones et de rhododendrons. Ses toiles plurent immédiatement. Il peignait la nature, les montagnes de Chamonix, les fleurs de la vallée.0Il peignait également, en géologue averti, le granit et le gneiss, les schistes et les veines de quartz. Parfois, sa palette immortalisait la douceur d'un visage familier, une scène de la vie quotidienne, un repas autour d'une fondue...
