A double edition of two unique monologue plays. Silk Road follows Bruce; nineteen, unemployed and living with his Nan. A struggling young Geordie tech-head, he's the unlikeliest international criminal mastermind you can imagine. But sucked into an underworld dark web of new-age pirates, local gangsters and tea-cosies, it isn't long before Bruce discovers how easy it is to buy narcotics online. Rules for Being a Man looks at the marks men create in themselves and others. Following three generations of a family centred around one pivotal action, this honest new play concerns the different pressures men face going through life living in a society where the scars of toxic masculinity are becoming more and more visible on the cultural landscape. The play has been inspired by interviews with survivors of suicide and The Samaritans--back cover.

Jones and Davis are fighting. There's a skeleton in the well. There's more to being Welsh than having the accent, isn't there? Written for a single performer, Tara Robinson and Steffan Donnelly's My Body Welsh is a lyrical thriller which guides the audience through Llanfair-pwllgwyngyll-gogery-chwyrn-drobwll-llan-tysilio-gogo-goch and into a world of slippery small-town myth-making. My Body Welsh is a vibrant, part-bilingual piece of contemporary theatre that investigates the role storytelling plays in constructing national identity.--Supplied by publisher.

"Unicorns, Almost portrays the short life of World War II poet Keith Douglas, from his childhood through four engagements to his fighting in the Western desert, his accelerated education as a poet and his early death three days after the Normandy D-Day landings at the age of twenty-four. It is the story of his Faustian pact with a war that would nurture his unique poetic voice before taking it away. It is also the story of his desperate race to see his poems in print. Widely recognised as the finest poet of World War Two, Keith Douglas was championed by Ted Hughes as an important influence. Unicorns, Almost by Owen Sheers opened at The Swan Hotel, Hay-on-Wye, in May 2018."--

"Stephen Jeffreys's play Finsbury Park is a short autobiographical monologue. It was first performed by Stephen Jeffreys as part of Paines Plough's Come to Where I'm From at Park Theatre, London, on 6 July 2016. The play is closely autobiographical, a series of anecdotes and recollections of Finsbury Park and Crouch End, of growing up there as a boy in the 1950s, of Arsenal games, buses, London fog and the kindness of strangers. In her Introduction to the collection Stephen Jeffreys: Plays (Nick Hern Books, 2018), Jeffreys' wife Annabel Arden writes: 'The house Stephen grew up in, 45 Weston Park, had been acquired by his paternal grandfather in 1936, and three generations as well as many lodgers lived there in a very particular post-war austerity. It was a childhood full of eccentric characters, English humour and stoicism. His monologue Finsbury Park... captures the essence of this.'"--

"Anna Jordan's short play Closer to God explores the private worlds of strangers, living side by side in a tower block, but generations apart. It was first performed at the Old Red Lion Theatre, London, in 2009 as part of the inaugural OffCut Festival, winning the Overall Winner and Audience Choice Award. The play is set on the nineteenth floor of a council-owned tower block, with the playing space divided into two areas by an imaginary partition wall. 'She' is a young single mother, while 'He' is a seventy-nine-year-old man in the flat next door. Their interweaving monologues lay bare the differences and connections that can exist between people, living in the sky, just the other side of the thin wall. The Old Red Lion production was directed by Anna Jordan and performed by Peter Gordon and Ursula Early."--

"Henry Naylor's play Borders is a two-hander about idealism, personal and professional ethics, how the West interacts with the East, the conflict in Syria, and the migrant crisis. It was first produced as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at the Gilded Balloon Theatre, Edinburgh, as a Redbeard Theatre/Gilded Balloon production on 2 August 2017. The play interweaves the converging stories (told mostly in monologue) of two characters: Sebastian Nightingale, a celebrated war photographer, whose audience with Osama bin Laden prior to 9/11 shaped his career; and a nameless young Syrian graffiti artist whose urge to rebel lands her in serious trouble as the Assad regime embarks on a civil war, and, six months pregnant, she finds herself on an ageing fishing boat in the Mediterranean, sinking fast under the weight of refugees."--

"David Edgar's Trying It On is an autobiographical play, written to be performed by its author. It was first performed at Warwick Arts Centre on 7 June 2018, at the beginning of a tour which included dates at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre; the Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham; the Royal Shakespeare Company's Other Place Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon; and the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, London. It was commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre and produced by China Plate theatre studio. The play is performed on a set designed to look like a study, full of clutter, with a stage manager's table to the side. David addresses the audience directly, reflecting on the journey he's taken from the twenty-year-old of 1968, experiencing worldwide student revolt and being immersed in radical politics, to the seventy-year-old of today. He wants to know if those two Davids share the same beliefs, and if not, whether it is the world that's changed, or him. He conducts straw polls to find out the audience's position on certain topics. He presents video testimony from several authors and political commentators. And as his delves deeper into his own history, and the apparently deepening rift between generations today, the Stage Manager, a young woman called Danni, steps in to challenge his perspective."--

"Rules For Being a Man depicts the everyday battle of masculinity, whilst these men go about their lives and struggle to hold on. Three different generations of men come to terms with love, life and other peoples expectations. Living in a society where the scars of toxic masculinity are becoming more and more visible on the cultural landscape, Rules For Being A Man looks at the marks men create in themselves, and others. Following three generations of a family centred around one pivotal action, this honest new play attempts to try to come to terms with the different pressures men face going through life trying to be a man and the damaging toll they take on their mental health. Inspired by interviews with survivors of suicide and The Samaritans."--
