    Der vorliegende Sammelband verortet sich im Schnittpunkt einer Technik- und Materialgeschichte der Kommunikation, einer historischen Medienforschung, einer Geschichte der Gefühle sowie der Geschlechtergeschichte. Die Zeit des 11. bis 15. Jahrhunderts ist die Zeit der "Verschriftung" der europäischen Kultur, der Verschriftlichung der Volkssprachen und des Eindringens der Schrift in die Bereiche von Verwaltung, Rechtswesen und Herrschaftsausübung. In diesem Kontext stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern die sich in diesem Prozess herausbildenden Liebeskonzepte durch die Schriftkultur geprägt sind. Dabei wird nicht nur die Materialität und Pragmatik des Mediums in den Blick genommen (Schreibmaterialien und Schrifthandeln), sondern genauso das mediale Konzept (Schrift als Medium der Abstraktion, als Distanzmedium, als Verfestigungsmedium, als Medium des Auges und der Anschaulichkeit) und die Schrifttradition. Der Band weist exemplarisch auf die zentrale Bedeutung der Mediengeschichte für die historische Emotionalitätsforschung hin und ist insofern auch Teil einer noch zu schreibenden Mediengeschichte der Emotionen Despite some tendencies in more recent research, there is still a need for a close linking of research in the history of emotionality with questions in media theory. This is the starting point for the present volume, which enquires into the effects on contemporary concepts of love of the "scriptorality" of European culture in the period from the 11th to 15th centuries.     "The Power of the In-Between: Intermediality as a Tool for Aesthetic Analysis and Critical Reflection gathers fourteen individual case studies where intermedial issues—issues concerning that which takes place in between media—are explored in relation to a range of different cultural objects and contexts, different methodological approaches, and different disciplinary perspectives. The cases investigate the intermediality of such manifold objects and phenomena as contemporary installation art, twentieth-century geography books, renaissance sculpture, media theory, and public architecture of the 1970s. They also bring together scholars from the disciplines of art history, comparative literature, theatre studies, musicology, and the history of ideas.

    Starting out from an inclusive understanding of intermediality as “relations between media conventionally perceived as different,” each author specifies and investigates “intermediality” in their own particular case; that is, each examines how it is inflected by particular objects, methods, and research questions. “Intermediality” thus serves both as a concept employed to cover an inclusive range of cultural objects, cultural contexts, methodological approaches, and so on, and as a concept to be modelled out by the particular cases it is brought to bear on. Rather than merely applying a predefined concept, the objectives are experimental. The authors explore the concept of intermediality as a malleable tool of research.

    This volume further makes a point of transgressing the divide between media history and semiotically and/or aesthetically oriented intermedial studies. The former concerns the specificity of media technologies and media interrelations in socially, politically, and epistemologically defined space and time, and the latter targets formal considerations of media objects and its various meaning-making elements. These two conventionally separated fields of research are integrated in order to produce a richer understanding of the analytical and historical, as well as the aesthetic and technological, conditions and possibilities of intermedial phenomena.

With education as its theme, this book seeks to present a body of reflections that questions a certain historicism and renovates historiographical debate about how to conceptualize and use images and artifacts in educational history, in the process presenting new themes and methods for researchers. Images are interrogated as part of regimes of the visible, of a history of visual technologies and visual practices. Considering the socio-material quality of the image, the analysis moves away from the use of images as mere illustrations of written arguments, and takes seriously the question of the life and death of artifacts - that is, their particular historicity. Questioning the visual and material evidence in this way means considering how, when, and in which régime of the visible it has come to be considered as a source, and what this means for the questions contemporary researchers might ask --

With education as its theme, this book seeks to present a body of reflections that questions a certain historicism and renovates historiographical debate about how to conceptualize and use images and artifacts in educational history, in the process presenting new themes and methods for researchers. Images are interrogated as part of regimes of the visible, of a history of visual technologies and visual practices. Considering the socio-material quality of the image, the analysis moves away from the use of images as mere illustrations of written arguments, and takes seriously the question of the life and death of artifacts - that is, their particular historicity. Questioning the visual and material evidence in this way means considering how, when, and in which régime of the visible it has come to be considered as a source, and what this means for the questions contemporary researchers might ask --

    Despite some tendencies in more recent research, there is still a need for a close linking of research in the history of emotionality with questions in media theory. This is the starting point for the present volume, which enquires into the effects on contemporary concepts of love of the "scriptorality" of European culture in the period from the 11th to 15th centuries. The various papers on medieval Latin, German and Italian literature focus not only on the materiality and pragmatics of the medium, but also the concept of mediality and the written tradition
