    A look at how ideas of translation, migration, and displacement are embedded in the works of prominent artists, from Ovid to Tacita DeanOn Belonging and Not Belonging provides a sophisticated exploration of how themes of translation, migration, and displacement shape an astonishing range of artistic works. From the possibilities and limitations of translation addressed by Jhumpa Lahiri and David Malouf to the effects of shifting borders in the writings of Eugenio Montale, W. G. Sebald, Colm Tóibín, and many others, esteemed literary critic Mary Jacobus looks at the ways novelists, poets, photographers, and filmmakers revise narratives of language, identity, and exile. Jacobus's attentive readings of texts and images seek to answer the question: What does it mean to identify as-or with-an outsider?Walls and border-crossings, nomadic wanderings and Alpine walking, the urge to travel and the yearning for home-Jacobus braids together such threads in disparate times and geographies. Doch ist es überhaupt möglich, sich ihren Erscheinungen zu entziehen, da sich die Welt uns zunächst nicht anders als über ihre Oberflächen präsentiert? Mit seiner medienkulturwissenschaftlichen Analyse der Oberfläche widmet sich Clemens Rathe einem Phänomen, das in den Geisteswissenschaften bislang kaum beachtet wurde. Anhand von Beispielen aus Literatur, Kunst, Mode und Architektur dekonstruiert er die Dichotomie von Oberfläche und Tiefe als kulturgeschichtliches Motiv und lenkt den Blick auf die komplexen wie widersprüchlichen Prozesse diesseits der Oberfläche.

Philipp Christian Kastropp setzt der tendenziellen Vernachlässigung der Seinsfrage eine akribische Lektüre zentraler Seinstexte entgegen - von der Entdeckung der Seinsfrage bei den Vorsokratikern über ihre Verdeckung bei Platon und von Nietzsches ambivalentem Verhältnis zur Seinsfrage bis zu ihrer streitbaren Wiederentdeckung bei Heidegger. Flankiert durch eine Untersuchung des Wechselspiels von Sein und Nichts, führt er somit auch den Nihilismus auf seine Wurzeln zurück.     Risse schlummern als materielle Phänomene oft unbeachtet im Hintergrund, bis sie plötzlich ins Zentrum unserer Aufmerksamkeit rücken. Als materielles Schauspiel bilden sie nicht nur in Kunst und Philosophie ein neues Untersuchungsfeld, sondern auch in der Theaterwissenschaft. Holger Hartung nimmt die Verwandlungen der Rissfigur in Texten Martin Heideggers und Jacques Derridas als Ausgangspunkte einer Kulturgeschichte vielfältiger Rissdarstellungen. Anhand von fünf künstlerischen Arbeiten unterstreicht er exemplarisch die tiefgehende Affinität von Rissfiguren und theatralen Szenarien und zeigt, wie sich diese durch Themen wie kollektive Traumata, Globalität, Migration oder Ökologie immer wieder aktualisiert.

    Seit jeher bilden »dynamis« und »energeia« das wohl schillerndste Begriffspaar in der Geschichte der Philosophie: In ihrem spannungsgeladenen Wechselspiel kommen Materialismus und Metaphysik, Vermögen und Verwirklichung zusammen. Doch können sie auch als historisch-politische Kategorien verstanden werden? Als solche zeigen gerade die Wendepunkte und Differenzen in ihrer Begriffsgeschichte einen Wandel im Geschichtsdenken und neue Möglichkeiten für politisches Handeln auf. Von Aristoteles über Martin Heidegger bis hin zu Jacques Derrida zeigt Nassima Sahraoui in ihrer eindringlichen Lektüre, dass ein neues Verständnis der antiken »dynamis« aktueller und notwendiger denn je ist, denn sie birgt ein kritisches Potential, durch das auch und gerade heute Momente der Freiheit für uns und unser Denken ermöglicht werden.

    Is writing haunted by a categorical imperative? Does the Kantian sublime continue to shape the writer’s vocation, even for twentieth-century authors? What precise shape, form, or figure does this residue of sublimity take in the fictions that follow from it—and that leave it in ruins?This book explores these questions through readings of three authors who bear witness to an ambiguous exigency: writing as a demanding and exclusive task, at odds with life, but also a mere compulsion, a drive without end or reason, even a kind of torture. If Kafka, Blanchot, and Beckett mimic a sublime vocation in their extreme devotion to writing, they do so in full awareness that the trajectory it dictates leads not to metaphysical redemption but rather downward, into the uncanny element of fiction. As this book argues, the sublime has always been a deeply melancholy affair, even in its classical Kantian form, but it is in the attenuated speech of narrative voices progressively stripped of their resources and rewards that the true nature of this melancholy is revealed.

    Poetry, or poiēsis, has long been understood as a practice of making. But how are experiments in the making of poetic forms related to formal making in science and engineering? The Limits of Fabrication takes up this question in the context of recent developments in nanoscale materials science, investigating concepts and ideologies of form at stake in new approaches to material construction. Tracing the direct pertinence of fields crucial to the new materials science (nanotechnology, biotechnology, crystallography, and geodesic design) in the work of Shanxing Wang, Caroline Bergvall, Christian Bök, and Ronald Johnson back to the midcentury development of Charles Olson’s “objectist” poetics, Nathan Brown carves out a tradition of constructivist, nonorganic poetics that has developed in conversation with science and engineering.While proposing a new approach to the relation of technē (craft, skill) and poiēsis (making, forming), this book also intervenes in philosophical debates concerning the concept of the object, the distinction between organic and inorganic matter, theories of self-organization, and the relation between “design” and “nature.” Engaging with Heidegger, Agamben, Whitehead, Stiegler, and Nancy, Brown shows that materials science and materialist poetics offer crucial resources for thinking through the direction of contemporary materialist philosophy.

Durch eine aufmerksame Lektüre philosophischer Texte (von Wilhelm von Humboldt, Roman Jakobson, Niklas Luhmann, Hans-Georg Gadamer und Martin Heidegger) demonstriert Hajnalka Halász, wie die Hinwendung zu Fragen nach der Sprache zugleich radikal Begriffs- und Denksysteme in Frage stellt, auf welche unter anderem Theorien der Kunst, der Literatur, der Kultur, der Medialität und der Gesellschaft aufbauen. Dieses schon der Antike bekannte Gefühl einer fundamentalen Verschränkung von Ich und Welt avanciert im letzten Drittel des 18. Jahrhu With the publication of Goethe's `Werther' (1774), a new phenomenon found its way into the history of literature: mood. This feeling - familiar since antiquity - of a fundamental entanglement of self and world, developed in the last third of the 18th century into a formal poetic principal which went on to decisively shape the ensuing epoch of Romanticism. After its emergence in literature, the aesthetic mood also becomes a central medium of expression in music and other forms of art right across Europe. Stefan Hajduk's study systematically fleshes out the phenomenon of mood into a methodologically sound concept of historical literary research, and as such, connects the current theoretical debates around emotions with the practice of the scientific reading of emotions.

Gleichzeitig verfasste Hannah Arendt selbst Gedichte (Piper-Verlag, 2015). Anne Bertheau analysiert zum ersten Mal systematisch Arendts Verhältnis zur Dichung: ihre Rezeption verschiedener Lyriker, ihre theoretische Reflexion zur Dichtung und die Produktion ihrer eigenen Lyrik. Anne Bertheau (Dr. phil.), geb. 1971, verfasste ihre Doktorarbeit zu Hannah Arendt und Dichtung an der Universität Paris IV, Sorbonne. Sie verfasste die Überlieferungs- und Druckgeschichte der Gedichtausgabe Hannah Arendts »Ich selbst, auch ich tanze« bei Piper. Weiterhin forscht sie zu Albert Camus (DAAD-gefördert).
