Thompson and the poetics of disenchantment "This book explores the hopes, desires, and imagined futures which characterized British radicalism in the 1790s, and the resurfacing of this sense of possibility in the following decades. The articulation of "Jacobin" sentiments reflected the emotional investments of men and women inspired by the French Revolution and committed to political transformation. The authors emphasize the performative aspects of political culture, and the spaces in which mobilization and expression occurred - including the club room, tavern, coffeehouse, street, outdoor meeting, theater, chapel, courtroom, prison, and convict ship. America, imagined as a site of republican citizenship, and New South Wales, experienced as a space of political exile, widened the scope of radical dreaming. Part One focuses on the political culture forged under the shifting influence of the French Revolution. Part Two explores the afterlives of British Jacobinism in the year 1817, in early Chartist memorialization of the Scottish "martyrs" of 1794, and in the writings of E. P. Thompson. The relationship between popular radicals and the Romantics is a theme pursued in several chapters; a dialogue is sustained across the disciplinary boundaries of British history and literary studies. The volume captures the revolutionary decade's effervescent yearning, and its unruly persistence in later years"--

    Schon für Platon galt Kommunikation durch Schrift als nicht verlässlich genug, für politische Belange in Anspruch genommen zu werden. In autoritären Gemeinschaften und totalitären Systemen bekommt diese Unzuverlässigkeit von Schrift neue Virulenz. Dieser Band zeigt, wie die sowjetische Macht in den 1920er und 30er Jahren diesem Problem zu begegnen versucht. In Einzelstudien werden vor allem drei Strategien analysiert, die das politische System bemüht, um die ästhetische Vieldeutigkeit unter Kontrolle zu bringen: die Technologisierung der schriftstellerischen Arbeit, die von der Kinderliteratur bis zu den kanonischen Meisterwerken reichende Pädagogisierung und schließlich die Folklorisierung von Literatur und Kunst, bei der die Rezeption massenmedial gesteuert und ideologisch ausgerichtet werden soll.

In autoritären Gemeinschaften und totalitären Systemen bekommt diese Unzuverlässigkeit von Schrift neue Virulenz.     An original account of the importance of diverse forms of fiction in the early American republic-one that challenges the "rise of the novel" narrativeWhat is the use of fiction? This question preoccupied writers in the early United States, where many cultural authorities insisted that fiction-reading would mislead readers about reality. Founded in Fiction argues that this suspicion made early American writers especially attuned to one of fiction's defining but often overlooked features-its fictionality. Thomas Koenigs shows how these writers explored the unique types of speculative knowledge that fiction could create as they sought to harness different varieties of fiction for a range of social and political projects.Spanning the years 1789-1861, Founded in Fiction challenges the "rise of novel" narrative that has long dominated the study of American fiction by highlighting how many of the texts that have often been considered the earliest American novels actually defined themselves in contrast to the novel. Their writers developed self-consciously extranovelistic varieties of fiction, as they attempted to reform political discourse, shape women's behavior, reconstruct a national past, and advance social criticism. Ambitious in scope, Founded in Fiction features original discussions of a wide range of canonical and lesser-known writers, including Hugh Henry Brackenridge, Royall Tyler, Charles Brockden Brown, Leonora Sansay, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Montgomery Bird, George Lippard, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Jacobs.By reframing the history of the novel in the United States as a history of competing varieties of fiction, Founded in Fiction shows how these fictions structured American thinking about issues ranging from national politics to gendered authority to the intimate violence of slavery

    Der Erste Weltkrieg markiert einen Einschnitt, nach dem die literarischen Kräfteverhältnisse wieder neu ausgehandelt werden. Der Radikalisierung der literarischen Autonomie durch Avantgardebewegungen wie Dadaismus und Surrealismus stehen auf konservativer Seite nationalistische und katholische Gruppierungen gegenüber, deren Bedeutung im Streben nach der dominanten Position im literarischen Feld heute weitgehend vergessen ist. Hinzu kommen noch internationalistisch ausgerichtete Tendenzen sowie die Debatte um die Arbeiterliteratur. Die verschiedenen Positionen gruppieren sich um bestimmte literarische Zeitschriften, die das Spektrum der möglichen Stellungnahmen bündeln. Die Meinungsführerschaft beanspruchen zunächst die konservativen Kräfte, die die Literatur in ein ideologisches Bollwerk aus Nationalismus, Katholizismus und literarischer Tradition einbinden wollen, um sich von den als bedrohlich empfundenen Modernisierungsprozessen abzuschotten. Die Nachkriegsgeneration reagiert auf die gleiche Krisensituation mit einem Flottieren zwischen Katholizismus und literarischer Avantgarde. Erst im Laufe der zwanziger Jahre bilden sich mit der Gruppe um die »Nouvelle Revue française« und den Surrealisten die dominanten Pole heraus, von denen aus das literarische Feld zu seiner Autonomie zurückfindet. Schriftsteller wie André Gide oder Jean Cocteau erscheinen in ihren Implikationen in die verschiedenen Debatten in einem neuen Licht, bislang unterschätzte Autoren wie Jacques Rivière oder Philippe Soupault stehen im Schnittpunkt der Auseinandersetzungen, Jacques Maritains Rolle beim Eindringen des Katholizismus in die literarische Avantgarde schließlich blieb bislang nahezu völlig unbeachtet
