Shakespeare, Trauma and Contemporary Performance examines how contemporary performances of Shakespeare's texts on stage and screen engage with violent events and histories. The book attempts to account for - but not to rationalize - the ongoing and pernicious effects of various forms of violence as they have emerged in selected contemporary performances of Shakespeare's texts, especially as that violence relates to apartheid, colonization, racism, homophobia and war. Through a series of wide-ranging case studies, which are informed by debates in Shakespeare, trauma and performance studies and developed from extensive archival research, the book examines how performances and their documentary traces work variously to memorialize, remember and witness violent events and histories. In the process, Silverstone considers the ethical and political implications of attempts to represent trauma in performance, especially in relation to performing, spectatorship and community formation. Ranging from the mainstream to the fringe, key performances discussed include Gregory Doran's Titus Andronicus (1995) for Johannesburg's Market Theatre; Don C. Selwyn's New Zealand-made film, The Maori Merchant of Venice (2001); Philip Osment's appropriation of The Tempest in This Island's Mine for London's Gay Sweatshop (1988); and Nicholas Hytner's Henry V (2003) for the National Theatre in London.

Garrett Sullivan explores the changing impact of Aristotelian conceptions of vitality and humanness on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature before and after the rise of Descartes. Aristotle's tripartite soul is usually considered in relation to concepts of psychology and physiology. However, Sullivan argues that its significance is much greater, constituting a theory of vitality that simultaneously distinguishes man from, and connects him to, other forms of life. He contends that, in works such as Sidney's Old Arcadia, Shakespeare's Henry IV and Henry V, Spenser's Faerie Queene, Milton's Paradise Lost and Dryden's All for Love, the genres of epic and romance, whose operations are informed by Aristotle's theory, provide the raw materials for exploring different models of humanness; and that sleep is the vehicle for such exploration as it blurs distinctions among man, plant and animal

This study deals with the central reflection figure of the fictional in Shakespeare’s history play Henry V: “mockery.” At the core of this analysis is the relation of “mockeries” and “true things” in Henry V. The play makes use of this relation to construe its own poetics, balancing truth and history with imitation and poetry in the sense of fiction. This study examines aspects of communication and translation, the role of the audience, concepts of possibility and necessity, and contextualises the play in early modern discourse on poetry and poetics.

"This is the first stage history of Shakespeare's King Henry V to cover the play's theatrical life since its first performance in 1599. Staging this play has always been a political act and the substantial introduction traces its theatrical interventions into conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to Vietnam and the Falklands crisis, offering a complete account of the play's fortunes: from its absence in the seventeenth century to its dominant position as historical spectacle in the Victorian period, through twentieth-century productions, which include the popular films by Olivier and Branagh. Together they raise vital interpretive questions: is Henry V an epic of English nationalism, a knowing and cynical piece of power politics, or an anti-war manifesto? The volume also includes the playtext, illustrations and detailed footnotes about major performance."--BOOK JACKET.

Just at the moment when conflicts between critical "isms" are threatening to turn the study of English literature into a game park for endangered texts, Graham Bradshaw arrives with a work of liberating wit and insight. His subject is double: the Shakespeare he reads and the Shakespeare that critics in the ranks of the new historicists and cultural materialists are representing (or misrepresenting). In writing on Henry V, Othello, The Tempest, and The Merchant of Venice, Bradshaw probes the complex dramatic thinking behind the plays. He is much concerned with Shakespeare's "dramatic rhyming," the manner in which different parts of the plays are brought to bear on one another within a complex design. Branching out from these readings, he shows how frequently politicized materialist readings expose and contradict one another in their partial and opportunistic samplings of Shakespeare's texts. Bradshaw argues that the plays can help us to historicize our present, if we allow them to test - instead of using them to "instantiate" - our cherished theories. Far more than elegant nay-saying, Misrepresentations moves toward a rich new conceptualization of cultural poetics, one responsive to our present critical situation and to the intricate designs of Shakespeare's poetic drama.
