    The concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems has been used as a framework to explain entrepreneurial activities within regions and industrial sectors. Despite the usefulness of this approach, the concept is under-theorized, especially with regard to the evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems. The current literature is lacking a theoretical foundation that addresses the development and change of entrepreneurial ecosystems over time and does not consider the inherent dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems that lead to their birth, growth, maturity, decline and re-emergence. Taking an industry lifecycle perspective, this paper addresses this research gap by elaborating a dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem lifecycle model. We propose that an ecosystem transitions from an entrepreneurial ecosystem, with a focus on new firm creation, towards a business ecosystem, with a core focus on the internal commercialization of knowledge, i.e. intrapreneurial activities, and vice versa. Our dynamic model thus captures the oscillation that occurs among entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs through the different phases of an ecosystem's lifecycle. Our dynamic lifecycle model may thus serve as a starting point for future empirical studies focusing on ecosystems and provide the basis for a further understanding of the interrelatedness between and co-existence of new and incumbent firms.

    Researchers increasingly recognize that entrepreneurial employees, intrapreneurs, play a critical role in innovation. As with regular entrepreneurship, however, the value of intrapreneurial activity depends on the firm-specific and societal reward structures that intrapreneurs face. Ideally, these rules of the game are such that they reward intrapreneurship that is beneficial for the firm and the economy. When this is not the case, intrapreneurship can be beneficial for the firm but not for society, damaging for the firm yet beneficial for society, or downright destructive. We offer a taxonomy describing how society's rules and firm rules interact to produce different intrapreneurial outcomes.

    Intrapreneurs, entrepreneurial employees, constitute an important force behind innovations in the economy. Yet, what factors that promote intrapreneurship at the country level are an underdeveloped research area. This paper provides a seminal contribution regarding the methodological approach and the broad set of potential explanatory factors studied. Based on machine-learning techniques (LASSO and EBA methods), we investigate the influence of over 60 factors capturing institutional, demographic, cultural, and developmental factors. We find that the quality of government measured as impartiality, i.e., that the political institutions treat the citizens in a non-discriminatory fashion and do not favor some groups or individuals, and the level of human capital, measured as the average years of schooling, are the most important factors predicting the level of intrapreneurship across countries. Instrumental variable results support a causal interpretation. The findings emphasize the importance of policy to establish well-functioning and impartial institutions as well as to promote higher education.

    Die künftige Entwicklung am Arbeitsmarkt ist von drei Megatrends geprägt: Einer Verlagerung unternehmerischer Verantwortung und Risiken auf Arbeitnehmer, steigenden fachlichen Qualifikationsanforderungen und einem drastischen Rückgang des Erwerbspersonenpotentials infolge des demographischen Wandels. Von letzterem werden insbesondere fachlich gut qualifizierte Arbeitnehmer profitieren, aber auch für diejenigen, die über mittlere oder einfache Qualifikationen verfügen, werden sich die Chancen am Arbeitsmarkt deutlich verbessern. Damit diese Chancen genutzt werden können, muss allerdings verhindert werden, dass der demographische Wandel zu einer Explosion der Arbeitskosten und in der Folge zu einem massiven Abbau von Arbeitsplätzen führt. Darüber hinaus muss die in Deutschland traditionell starke Vermittlung von fachlichen Fähigkeiten durch eine Stärkung mentaler Fähigkeiten ergänzt werden. Fachkräfte für die Arbeit der Zukunft sind Fachkräfte mit unternehmerischen Kompetenzen.

    In Schumpeterian terms, entrepreneurship is a force of creative destruction, and entrepreneurs are risk-takers who pioneer an innovation - typically a technological innovation but also possibly an organizational innovation. Such entrepreneurs are often true-believers in the innovation, and proselytize for it in the marketplace and sometimes, in the case of what are today called intrapreneurs, within an organizational hierarchy. On this panel, we argue that industrial standardization, usually thought of as a staid field that limits, rather than promotes, innovation, is populated by multiple individuals who can be seen as entrepreneurs of standardization, either in a particular technical arena or on a broader, organizational level

    I explore the factors that determine whether new business opportunities are exploited by starting a new venture for an employer ('nascent intrapreneurship') or independently ('nascent entrepreneurship'). Analysis of a nationally representative sample of American adults gathered in 2005-06 uncovers systematic differences between the drivers of nascent entrepreneurship and nascent intrapreneurship. Nascent entrepreneurs tend to leverage their general human capital and social ties to organize ventures which sell directly to customers, whereas intrapreneurs disproportionately commercialize unique new opportunities which sell to other businesses.
