"Bridging Discourses in the ESL Classroom is concerned with the nature of talk in multilingual classrooms. Examining the interactions between students learning in and through English as a second language and their teachers, this book identifies the patterns of discourse which support and enable both second language development and the learning of curriculum knowledge. These patterns are 'bridging discourses', combining the everyday language used by the student with the specialised language of the academic register. Drawing on second language acquisition research and systemic functional linguistic theory, in particular the work of Halliday and Vygotsky, Pauline Gibbons develops tools to view classroom talk through a powerful interdisciplinary lens. Putting forward an innovative new theory of classroom discourse analysis, this book focuses on applying theory to practice. This is an invaluable resource for all teachers, researchers and students of linguistics and education." -- Bloomsbury Publishing Part 1. Language, learning and learners: perspectives across disciplines -- Part 2. Inside two classrooms -- Part 3. Discourse contexts for second language development

"This collection introduces, theorizes, and illustrates the Writing-Enriched Curriculum (WEC), an approach to integrating relevant writing and communication instruction into diverse departmental curricula. The book organizes into three sections: "The WEC Approach," which tracks WEC's genesis, theorizes its approach, and explicates the model's component moves; "Accounts of Departmentally-Focused Implementation," which provides examples of the model's adaptive implementation in a range of institutional settings (including large research universities and small liberal arts colleges) and departmental contexts (including those in STEM fields, humanities, social sciences, and arts); and "Extensions and Contextual Variation," which evidences ways in which WEC extends pre-existing writing initiatives and forges constructive partnerships between idiosyncratic academic departments and programs. Themes taken up in this collection include the transformative potential of engaging academic departments in collectively examining their own tacit and explicit writing values, and ways in which the WEC model's decentralized and iterative processes circumvent factors that have long threatened the sustainability of writing across the curriculum and writing in the disciplines programming"--

Composition and the Rhetoric of Science: Engaging the Dominant Discourse calls for instructors of first-year writing courses to employ primary scientific discourse in their teaching and for rhetoricians of science to think about teaching scientific discourse as a literacy skill. Author Michael J. Zerbe argues that inclusion of scientific discourse is crucial because of this rhetoric's status as the dominant discourse in western culture. The volume draws on Lyotard, Žižek, Foucault, and Althusser to argue that while important theorists such as these

"With a stated objective that "any person can find instruction in any study," Cornell exemplifies academic diversity. The institution has a long tradition of excellence in writing and is home to one of the oldest academic writing programs. At the core of Cornell's approach is the idea that writing well is a concern that is not limited to one department or field, but is best approached in a multidisciplinary way

Thus, writing is taught at Cornell by faculty and graduate students in areas as varied as neurobiology, political science, and Near Eastern studies, among others. In the chapters of Local Knowledges, Local Practices, the faculty of this innovative program candidly share their visions, their practical pedagogical techniques, and the sometimes surprising insights they have gained."

"After ten years of teaching, one contributor describes the impact her involvement in the writing program had on her career as "a massive paradigm shift: teaching centered not on what I knew, but what somebody else needed to know."

A professor of urban studies also found something unexpected when he began teaching writing to first-year students: "In their concern to produce good writing, to get their ideas straight, and to think logically and use evidence honestly, the students forget to be careful ... As they struggle to write, they become freer to think

I like that!" Another seasoned academician observes, "Teachers, for their part, discover ways to reformulate abstract theoretical constructs into more accessible, useful, and interesting arguments for students to integrate into their own intellectual development. In so doing a teacher has the opportunity to both have an immediate impact on student understanding and to refine and extend the meaning and value of the more abstract work in his or her own writing.""

"The voices collected in this volume encourage faculty and administrators from all disciplines and all institutions to reclaim responsibility for teaching the field-specific writing they want their students to learn, and affirm the importance of good writing as integral to learning in all fields and at all levels of the curriculum."--BOOK JACKET.
