    This volume of original essays presents an overview of Popular Culture Studies as an ever-growing branch of American Studies while also reflecting the critical debates driving the field toward a more nuanced approach to contemporary culture more generally. Thus, many of the essays included take fresh perspectives on Black American culture, feminism, multiculturalism, and queer studies, among others, but they also provide critical updates on the global impact of U.S. American popular culture. If an understanding of U.S. Culture as Popular Culture in its national and international dimensions is one of the aims behind this publication, another is to conceive of cultural formations against the backdrop of shifting media environments. Placed alongside more traditional media such as literature and film, more recent phenomena including reality television, internet memes, and video games add considerable relevance to the critical appreciation of culture in the twenty-first century.

    Bouchra Khalili works across film, video, installation, photography, printmaking and editorial platforms. Originating from long and extended research, her interdisciplinary practice examines imperial and colonial continuums as epitomized by contemporary forced illegal migrations and the suppressed memory of anti-colonial struggles and international solidarity. Deeply informed by the legacy of post-independence avant-gardes and vernacular traditions from her native Morocco, Khalili's methodology develops strategies of storytelling at the intersection of history and micro-narratives. She suggests a meditation on the power of civil poetry as defined by Italian poet and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini and as practiced for centuries in Al-Halqa, Morocco's oldest tradition of public storytelling. Bouchra Khalili arbeitet medienübergreifend mit einem sehr charakteristischen Erzählstil. Diese Monografie erscheint anlässlich ihrer Ausstellung im Bildmuseet in Umeå, Schweden. Mit dem Wissen um die Avantgarden der Zeit nach der Unabhängigkeit sowie um die volkstümlichen Traditionen ihres Heimatlandes Marokko kombiniert Khalili in ihren Arbeiten verschiedene performative Strategien des Geschichtenerzählens. Diese narrativen Formen sind dabei sowohl von 'ziviler Poesie', wie sie vom italienischen Filmemacher Pier Paolo Pasolini definiert wurde, als auch von der Tradition der marokkanischen Al-Halqa inspiriert. Begleitende Essays ordnen die mit diesen Erzählweisen verbundenen Konzepte ein.BOUCHRA KHALILI (*1975) ist eine marokkanisch-französische Künstlerin und Professorin, sie lebt in Berlin. In ihren Arbeiten beschäftigt sie sich mit Film, Installation, Fotografie und Druckgrafik und entwickelt Strategien des Geschichtenerzählens.
