    This open access book is a result of an extensive, ambitious and wide-ranging pan-European project focusing on the development of children and young people’s cultural literacy and what it means to be European in the 21st century prioritising intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. The Horizon 2020 funded, 3-year DIalogue and Argumentation for cultural Literacy Learning (DIALLS) project included ten partners from countries in and around Europe with the aim to centralise co-constructive dialogue as a main cultural literacy value and to promote tolerance, empathy and inclusion. This is achieved through teaching children in schools from a young age to engage together in discussions where they may have differing viewpoints or perspectives, to enable a growing awareness of their own cultural identities, and those of others. Central to the project is children’s engagement with wordless picture books and films, which are used as stimuli for discussions around core cultural themes such as social responsibility, living together and sustainable development. In order to enable intercultural dialogue in action, the project developed an online platform as a tool for engagement across classes, and which this book elaborates on. The book explores themes underpinning this unique interdisciplinary project, drawing together scholars from cultural studies, civics education and linguistics, psychologists, socio-cultural literacy researchers, teacher educators and digital learning experts. Each chapter of the book explores a theme that is common to the project, and celebrates its interdisciplinarity by exploring these themes through different lenses.

    Zum kontext der Forschung -- Theoretischer und methodischer Rahmen -- Ethnographische Collagen und Ergebnisdarstellung Die Studie untersucht, wie neu zugewanderte Schüler*innen an einer Hamburger Sekundarschule integrativ, d.h. sowohl in Regelklassen als auch einer Vorbereitungsklasse, beschult werden. Anhand von ethnographischen Daten wird durch Auswertungsmethoden der Reflexiven Grounded Theory aufgezeigt, wie es zu Prozessen der Inklusion und Exklusion durch sprachliche Bildung kommt. Herausforderungen zeigen sich in strukturell-organisationalen Hürden, während sich Chancen durch das inklusive Selbstverständnis der Schule ergeben, die ihren Unterricht an eine diverse Schüler*innenschaft angepasst hat. So hängt die Möglichkeit der Teilhabe am Regelunterricht letztlich vor allem von Faktoren ab, die alle Schüler*innen gleichermaßen und nicht nur neu zugewanderte betreffen. Die Autorin Dr. Simone Plöger ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Fachbereich Interkulturelle Erziehungswissenschaft der Universität Hamburg. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören Inklusion, Diskriminierung und Diversität im Kontext schulischer Bildung, Migrationsbedingte Mehrsprachigkeit und sprachliche Bildung in Zeiten von Neuzuwanderung, Beschulung neu zugewanderter Schüler*innen und Ethnographie in Schule und Unterricht

    This book is based on a longitudinal study involving learners of English as a foreign language from their first year in primary education to their last year in compulsory secondary education. Some of the chapters report on the whole sample initially drawn from five primary schools and some are based on a sample of focal learners. These focal learners were followed in secondary school (grades 7 and 10). One of the main aims of the book is capturing change over time regarding the learners’ language perceptions and awareness, oral and written language development, learners’ attitudes and motivation, and their language learning trajectories. The longitudinal nature of the data also allows identification of internal and external factors on learners’ linguistic outcomes. The book draws on a wealth of data sources (self-reported data, classroom observations, institutional data, language tests and tasks), participants (learners, teachers, parents), several testing times and both qualitative and quantitative analyses. The book will be of interest to educators and scholars working on such areas as language pedagogy, language development and awareness as well as individual differences.

    In social debates about inclusion, the humane, the individual person, runs the risk of being lost from view, as the discussions are often only conducted on a systemic-structural level. However, aspects of concrete pedagogical and conceptual work and educational encounters are also affected. This volume is dedicated to the diversity of individuals in their respective contexts in the spectrum between inclusions and exclusions from different theoretical and practical perspectives. From everyday situations in German and American classrooms to school inclusion models and the Federal Participation Act to humane exclusions in the internationally networked digital age; from discourses on vulnerability, ethics and exclusion to the topos of the stranger in the educational inclusion debate, multiple perspectives open up.
