    In addition to geographical and physical aspects, the city is also a poetic and subjective space in which individual worldviews meet, interact with each other and even transform. Fernando Toledo deals with urban space and its effects on identity and narrative representations in a context dominated by globalization processes and the development of so-called "ephemeral modernity". Through an innovative theoretical contextualization in literary studies, his interdisciplinary study offers a new perspective on contemporary German-language and Brazilian literature and their similarities and differences.

    Die Frage nach Identität ist in französischsprachigen Literaturen und Filmen aus dem Maghreb ein zentrales Thema. Aufgrund ihres Entstehungskontextes, der von der Kolonialisierung durch Frankreich geprägt ist, hinterfragen sie oftmals essentialistische Vorstellungen von Identität. Dabei fokussieren sie nicht nur kulturelle, sondern vor allem auch geschlechterspezifische Differenzen. Madeleine Löning analysiert am Beispiel eines Romans von Abdellah Taïa und eines Spielfilms von Nadia El Fani die Dekonstruktion von Identität in französischsprachigen Gegenwartskulturen des Maghreb. Im Vordergrund stehen die Kategorien Gender, Kultur und Klasse sowie ihre intersektionalen Wechselwirkungen.

Fernando Toledo befasst sich mit dem urbanen Raum und seinen Auswirkungen auf die Identität und die narrativen Repräsentationen in einem von Globalisierungsprozessen und der Entwicklung der sogenannten »flüchtigen Moderne« dominierten Kontext. Durch eine innovative theoretische Kontextualisierung in den Literaturwissenschaften bietet seine interdisziplinäre Studie einen neuen Blick auf die deutschsprachige und brasilianische Gegenwartsliteratur und ihre Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede.

    Erstmals werden mit diesem Buch visuelle Darstellungen von Migrant*innen im Kontext der Arbeitsmigration in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland anhand von Presse- und Privatfotografien untersucht. Für den Zeitraum von 1960 bis 1982 analysiert Claudia Valeska Czycholl in Spiegel und Stern kursierende Fremdbilder von Migrant*innen. Sie zeichnet diskursive Verläufe nach, fokussiert zentrale Stadien und Themen und identifiziert dominante Repräsentationsmuster. Zudem hinterfragt sie mittels fotografischer Selbstkonstruktionen von Migrant*innen diese hegemonialen Darstellungsweisen und hierarchisierenden Erzählungen von ›Uns‹ und ›Ihnen‹, von ›Wir‹ und den ›Anderen‹. Die Studie gibt so Einblick in tradierte Differenzkonstruktionen und stereotype Vorstellungen und liefert Materialien sowie theoretisch-methodische Ansätze, um sie zu hinterfragen.     This book collects twenty two previously published essays and one new one by Erich S. Gruen who has written extensively on the literature and history of early Judaism and the experience of the Jews in the Greco-Roman world. His many articles on this subject have, however, appeared mostly in conference volumes and Festschriften, and have therefore not had wide circulation. By putting them together in a single work, this will bring the essays to the attention of a much broader scholarly readership and make them more readily available to students in the fields of ancient history and early Judaism. The pieces are quite varied, but develop a number of connected and related themes: Jewish identity in the pagan world, the literary representations by Jews and pagans of one another, the interconnections of Hellenism and Judaism, and the Jewish experience under Hellenistic monarchies and the Roman empire.

    In looking at contemporary Iranian video art, this book examines artistic presentations of the self and the (de)construction of identity. Künstlerische Selbstinszenierungen in der zeitgenössischen iranischen Videokunst sind nicht zuletzt durch Identitätskonstruktionen im sowohl inner- als auch außeriranischen visuellen Diskurs geprägt. Im Zentrum dieses Buches stehen Arbeiten von Simin Keramati und Shahram Entekhabi, die in eine breit angelegte kunst- und kulturwissenschaftliche Analyse des Identitätsbegriffs in Iran des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts eingebettet sind.Julia Allerstorfers interdisziplinäre Studie berücksichtigt aktuelle Debatten um kulturelle Identität in migrativen und länderübergreifenden Kontexten und führt differenziert in performative und de/konstruktive Praxen der Selbstdarstellung in der iranischen Gegenwartskunst ein.

    Spätestens seit Germaine de Staëls Diktum von Preußens militärisch-philosophischem »Januskopf« ist Preußen eine Projektionsfläche für die unterschiedlichsten Fiktionen nationaler Identität. Das preußische Phantasma setzt sich aus einem Gewirr von Motiven und Narrativen zusammen, die sich verschieben und verzweigen, kombiniert und neuinszeniert werden. Hannelore Roth verfolgt die diskursive Vielfalt dieses Phänomens im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert. Anhand von bekannten und weniger bekannten Texten sowie der Debatte um das Berliner Schloss erkundet sie die performativen Strategien, mittels derer die Illusion einer geschlossenen Identität konstruiert wird und zugleich untergraben werden kann.

    The 1990 reunification of Germany gave rise to a new generation of writers who write in German, identify as both German and Jewish, and often also sustain cultural affiliations with places such as Russia, Azerbaijan, or Israel. This edited volume traces the development of this new literature into the present, offers fresh interpretations of individual works, and probes the very concept of "German Jewish literature." A central theme is the transformation of memory at a time when the Holocaust is moving into greater historical distance while the influx of new immigrant groups to Germany brings other past trauma into view. The volume's ten original essays by scholars from Europe and the U.S. reframe the debates about Holocaust memory and contemporary German culture. The concluding interviews with authors Mirna Funk and Olga Grjasnowa offer a glimpse into the future of German Jewish literature. Contributors: Luisa Banki, Caspar Battegay, Helen Finch, Mirna Funk, Katja Garloff, Olga Grjasnowa, Elizabeth Loentz, Andree Michaelis, Agnes Mueller, Jessica Ortner, Jonathan Skolnik, Stuart Taberner.     Transnationalism has become a key term in debates in the social sciences and humanities, reflecting concern with today's unprecedented flows of commodities, fashions, ideas, and people across national borders. Forced and unforced mobility, intensified cross-border economic activity due to globalization, and the rise of trans- and supranational organizations are just some of the ways in which we now live both within, across, and beyond national borders. Literature has always been a means of border crossing and transgression - whether by tracing physical movement, reflecting processes of cultural transfer, traveling through space and time, or mapping imaginary realms. It is also becoming more and more a 'moving medium' that creates a transnational space by circulating around the world, both reflecting on the reality of transnationalism and participating in it. This volume refines our understanding of transnationalism both as a contemporary reality and as a concept and an analytical tool. Engaging with the work of such writers as Christian Kracht, Ilija Trojanow, Julya Rabinowich, Charlotte Roche, Helene Hegemann, Antje Rávic Strubel, Juli Zeh, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, and Wolfgang Herrndorf, it builds on the excellent work that has been done in recent years on 'minority' writers; German-language literature, globalization, and 'world literature'; and gender and sexuality in relation to the 'nation.'     This special issue focuses on literary texts by African writers in which the protagonist returns to his/her "original" or ancestral "home" in Africa from other parts of the world. Ideas of return - intentional and actual - have been a consistent feature of the literature of Africa and the African diaspora: from Equiano's autobiography in 1789 to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 2013 novel Americanah. African literature has represented returnees in a range of locations and dislocations including having a sense of belonging, being alienated in a country they can no longer recognize, or experiencing a multiple sense of place. Contributors, writing on literature from the 1970s to the present, examine the extent to which the original place can be reclaimed with or without renegotiations of "home".

Simon Herzhoff zeichnet dieses Vorgehen detailliert nach und verhandelt darüber hinaus die Frage, wie man gemeinsam (politisch) handeln kann. Dabei bezieht er Theorien kollektiver Intentionalität, die Philosophien Cornelius Castoriadis', Ernesto Laclaus und Chantal Mouffes sowie architekturphilosophische Ansätze mit ein.

    The “transmigration of souls is no fable. I would it were, but men and women are only half human.” With these words, Ralph Waldo Emerson confronts a dilemma that illuminates the formation of American individualism: to evolve and become fully human requires a heightened engagement with history. Americans, Emerson argues, must realize history’s chronology in themselves—because their own minds and bodies are its evolving record. Whereas scholarship has tended to minimize the mystical underpinnings of Emerson’s notion of the self, his depictions of “the metempsychosis of nature” reveal deep roots in mystical traditions from Hinduism and Buddhism to Platonism and Christian esotericism. In essay after essay, Emerson uses metempsychosis as an open-ended template to understand human development.In Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman transforms Emerson’s conception of metempsychotic selfhood into an expressly poetic event.     Identity: Fragments, Frankness is a rich and powerful essay on the notion of identity and on how it operates in our contemporary world. In contrast to the various attempts to cling to established identities or to associate identity with dubious agendas, Nancy shows that an identity is always open to alterity and its transformations.Against cynical initiatives that seek to instrumentalize the question of identity in an attempt to manipulate sentiment against immigration, Nancy problematizes anew the notions of identity, nation, and national identity. He seeks to show that there is never a given identity but always an open process of identification that retains an exposure to difference. Thus identity can never operate as a self-identical subject, such as “the French.”Ultimately, for Nancy, one does not have an identity but has to become one. One can never return to a self-same identity but can only seek to locate oneself within difference and singularity. Nancy shows the impasse of a certain conception of identity that he calls the “identity of the identifiable,” which refers to some permanent, given, substantial identity. In opposition to such identity, Nancy offers the identity of whatever or whoever invents itself in an open process of exposure to others and internal difference. Hence, an identity is never given but “makes itself by seeking and inventing itself.” One does not have an identity, but is an identity.Identity is an act, not a state.This important book will provide much-needed philosophical clarification of a complex and strategic notion at the center of many current events and discussions.

Anhand von Prospekten aus 90 Jahren zeigt er auf, welche internationale Wahrnehmung Akteur*innen aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Tourismus für ihre eigenen und andere Staaten anstreben. Dabei eröffnet er neue Einblicke in zeitgenössische Weltbilder - und stößt auf Ambitionen der Abgrenzung zwischen Nachbarstaaten, Legitimation von Imperialismus, koloniale Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen sowie grenzüberschreitende Identitäten.

    Since the 1990's, there has been unparalleled growth in the literary output from an ever more diverse group of Latinx writers. Extant criticism, however, has yet to catch up with the diversity of writers we label Latinx and the range of themes about which they write. Little sustained scholarly attention has been paid, moreover, to the very category under which we group this literature. Latinx Literature Unbound, thus, begins with a fundamental question “What does it mean to label a work of literature or an entire corpus of literature Latinx?” From this question others emerge: What does Latinx allow or predispose us to see, and what does it preclude us from seeing? If the grouping—which brings together a heterogeneous collection of people under a seemingly homogeneous label—tells us something meaningful, is there a poetics we can develop that would facilitate our analysis of this literature? In answering these questions, Latinx Literature Unbound frees Latinx literature from taken-for-granted critical assumptions about identity and theme. It argues that there may be more salubrious taxonomies than Latinx for organizing and analyzing this literature. Privileging the act of reading as a temporal, meaning-making event, Ralph E. Rodriguez argues that genre may be a more durable category for analyzing this literature and suggests new ways we might proceed with future studies of the writing we have come to identify as Latinx.
