For Fernando Francés, Francisco Leiro "is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of how art can be synonymous with a commitment to life experience and autobiographical thought. Today’s society has adopted a passive, indifferent and egotistical position towards the misfortunes and miseries that occur across the globe. Leiro adopts a committed stance. He immerses himself in the reality of massacres, injustices, murders and rampant violence and imprints them on his sculptures where, whether we like it or not, we come face to face with the crude reality, with piles of dead people, innocent people who are beaten, workers who sweep away human remains from the ground or clean up after a disaster caused by humanity."

This engaging publication examines the prodigious body of work of American sculptor Manuel Neri (b. 1930) through the unique perspective of one of Neri's former students. A near-contemporary of other notable California-based artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud, Neri is best known for his large-scale figurative sculptures that combine classical figuration with the dynamic mark-making of Abstract Expressionism. The book traces the compelling yet often contradictory thematic arcs of Neri's powerful work and his greater impact on the field of sculpture. At the heart of the publication are Jock Reynolds's personal reflections on Neri and his legacy as a teacher, adding insight and intimacy to the scholarly understanding of the artist. Photographs of Neri in his studio, archival images, and installation photos of the related exhibition at the Yale University Art Gallery round out the book. With its blend of art history and personal reflection, this unique book offers valuable insight into an important, understudied California artist. "The Expressionist Figure' documents a collection amassed over more than 60 years and recently gifted to the Walker, which includes some 80 superlative works on paper that focus on the figure. Dating from 1900 to 2018, the drawings span more than a century of artistic experimentation in the US and Europe and were executed in mediums ranging from graphite, ink and crayon to pastel, gouache and collage. Among the artists represented are Milton Avery, Max Beckmann, Christo, Chuck Close, Edgar Degas, Willem de Kooning, Otto Dix, Marlene Dumas, Arshile Gorky, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, William Kentridge, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, René Magritte, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Claes Oldenburg, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke, Egon Schiele, Ben Shahn, Zak Smith and Andy Warhol. Published on the occasion of the first exhibition of this collection, this luxurious volume includes full-page color reproductions of each drawing along with a catalog entry detailing the history of each object. Also included are an essay by the collector on his passion for drawing, and curator Joan Rothfuss' deeply researched short essays on 14 individual works. Both beautiful and substantive, 'The Expressionist Figure' is a testament to the pleasure of building a collection and the rewards of sharing it."--Publisher's description

Artistes exposés : Sergey Bratkov, Cadu, Laurent Champoussin, Miguel Chevalier, Robert Combas, Thomas Fougeirol, Franz Gertsch, Mireille Gros, François Halard, Eva Jospin, Roni Landa, Sergey Melnitchenko, Ursula Palla, Richard Peduzzi, Antoinette Poisson, Arne Quinze, Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger, Rayyane Tabet, Eloise van der Heyden, Nives Widauer
