Klappentext engl.: "Figures de l'excès chez Marie Darrieussecq, Virginie Despentes et Marina de Van by Dominique Carlini Versini examines textual and visual images of the excessive body that run through the narratives of contemporary French women artists. From the 1990s onwards, a tendency towards excess has been observed in French fiction. On the one hand, young female writers have portrayed the body in a particularly crude manner. Meanwhile, a new trend has developed in film characterised by explicit or violent images of the body. The monograph's original approach is to compare the strategies of the two mediums to generate an embodied aesthetic experience while demonstrating that this formal experimentation goes hand in hand with a poetic reflection on the (material, cultural and symbolic) boundaries of the body"--

"The cinema has often showcased the muscular male body, most notably in genres invoking classical Greco-Roman culture, whether peplum, epic or sword-and-sorcery. This book reassesses the classically-inflected action film as a significant cinematic form, often marginalized in media studies, that transcends such reductive labels as camp or kitsch. The focus is on the depiction of heroic masculinity, often characterized as reactionary or fascist, yet far more varied and contradictory, especially in relation to femininity and non-whiteness. These diverse representations of masculinity offer a major contribution to debates on maleness within and beyond academia that has been largely unexplored. In particular, Hercules in his many incarnations is one of the most important mythopoetic figures, on a par with King Arthur, Robin Hood, Tarzan and James Bond, informing popular cultural interpretations of manliness and the exaggerated male form"..

"This is the first book-length study to systematically and theoretically analyse the use and representation of individual body parts in Gothic fiction. Moving between filmic and literary texts and across the body-from the brain, hair and teeth, to hands, skin and the stomach-this book engages in unique readings by foregrounding a diversity of global representations. Building on scholarly work on the 'Gothic body' and 'body horror', 'Gothic Dissections in Film and Literature' dissects the individual features that comprise the physical human corporeal form in its different functions. This very original and accessible study, which will appeal to a broad range of readers interested in the Gothic, centralises the use (and abuse) of limbs, organs, bones and appendages. It presents a set of unique global examinations; from Brazil, France and South Korea to name a few; that address the materiality of the Gothic body in depth in texts ranging from the nineteenth century to the present; from Nikolai Gogol, Edgar Allan Poe, Roald Dahl and Chuck Palahniuk, to David Cronenberg, Freddy Krueger and The Greasy Strangler."--Cover page 4

    1. Introduction: Affirmative ethics, wilfulness, and affects as forms -- 2. Urban wanderer and wilful performances: Head-on (Gegen die wand) -- 3. Housing wilfulness: Wadjda -- 4. Lived body, affects and cars: Friday night (Vendredi soir) -- 5. Conclusion: Affirmative aesthetics. While the idea of women who stay at home and men who dominate the streets may seem outdated, binary considerations of gender, space, and power still proliferate in contemporary cinema. This open access book adopts a fluid approach to space designed to accommodate wilful, affirmative, and imaginative perspectives of gender on screen. Through close analysis, or micro-analysis, of Messidor (Alain Tanner, 1979), Vendredi Soir (Claire Denis, 2002), Wadjda (Haifaa Al-Mansour, 2012), and Head-On (Fatih Akin, 2004), this book looks for light, textures, rhythms, movement, and sound that give shape to affirmative forms, forms that contribute to rewriting bodies and spaces--such as cars, homes, and city streets--that reject traditional gender and power structures. Wilful women drive this book forward, through movement and pauses, imagination and desire, persistence and dissimulation, eroticism, performance and abjection
