    Am Beispiel des Frühneuhochdeutschen Prosaromans "Melusine" des Thüring von Ringoltingen stellt die vorliegende Studie die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Druckerpraxis und Sprachwandel. Basierend auf einem Korpus von mehr als 30 Druckausgaben der "Melusine" über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 200 Jahren (aufgelegt von 1473/74 bis 1692/93) stellt die Untersuchung Faktoren für Varianz und Konstanz in den Drucken heraus, analysiert die Schreibsprachen auf Basis buchwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse und beschreibt Änderungen auf der Textebene. Durch die Betrachtung von Mikro- und Makrostrukturen des Textes lässt sich die Entwicklung der Textsorte "Frühneuhochdeutscher Prosaroman" exemplarisch darlegen. Ferner schafft die Differenzierung von Setzersprache, Druckersprache und Drucksprache einen angemessenen Rahmen, um das Verhältnis von Schriftsprache und gesprochener Sprache im Untersuchungszeitraum zu charakterisieren. Der interdisziplinäre Ansatz, der Sprachgeschichte mit Buchwissenschaft und Kunstgeschichte vereint, sowie die Beschaffenheit des Korpus stellen dabei ein forschungsgeschichtliches Novum dar

Basierend auf einem Korpus von mehr als 30 Druckausgaben der "Melusine" über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 200 Jahren (aufgelegt von 1473/74 bis 1692/93) stellt die Untersuchung Faktoren für Varianz und Konstanz in den Drucken heraus, analysiert die Schreibsprachen auf Basis buchwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse und beschreibt Änderungen auf der Textebene. Durch die Betrachtung von Mikro- und Makrostrukturen des Textes lässt sich die Entwicklung der Textsorte "Frühneuhochdeutscher Prosaroman" exemplarisch darlegen.     In the early modern Low Countries, literary culture functioned on several levels simultaneously: it provided learning, pleasure, and entertainment while also shaping public debate. From a ditty in Dutch sung in the streets to a funeral poem in Latin composed to be read for or by intimate friends, from a play performed for a prince to a comedy written for pupils – literary texts and performances often dealt with highly controversial topics of religion or politics, on a local or national, but also on a supranational scale. This volume sets out to analyse the role and function of literary culture in the formation of early modern public opinion, and proposes ways in which a modern scholar might approach early modern works of literature and other traces of literary culture to explore early modern public opinion making. The cases presented in this volume bring the Dutch and Latin literary cultures of the Low Countries in the focus of international debates on the history of public opinion.

    How ordinary forms of writing—including manuals, petitions, almanacs, and magazines—shaped the way colonial subjects understood their place in empire In Required Reading, Priyasha Mukhopadhyay offers a new and provocative history of reading that centers archives of everyday writing from the British empire. Mukhopadhyay rummages in the drawers of bureaucratic offices and the cupboards of publishers in search of how historical readers in colonial South Asia responded to texts ranging from licenses to manuals, how they made sense of them, and what this can tell us about their experiences living in the shadow of a vast imperial power. Taking these engagements seriously, she argues, is the first step to challenging conventional notions of what it means to read.Mukhopadhyay’s account is populated by a cast of characters that spans the ranks of colonial society, from bored soldiers to frustrated bureaucrats. These readers formed close, even intimate relationships with everyday texts. She presents four case studies: a soldier’s manual, a cache of bureaucratic documents, a collection of astrological almanacs, and a women’s literary magazine. Tracking moments in which readers refused to read, were unable to read, and read in part, she uncovers the dizzying array of material, textual, and aural practices these texts elicited. Even selectively read almanacs and impenetrable account books, she finds, were springboards for personal, world-shaping readerly relationships.Untethered from the constraints of conventional literacy, Required Reading reimagines how texts work in the world and how we understand the very idea of reading
