    Der spatial turn hat in der Mediävistik zu neuen Ansätzen in der Frage nach Raumkonzepten im Mittelalter geführt, die die Abhängigkeit des Raums von Bewegung und Kommunikation seiner Bewohner und Betrachter dominant setzen. Bislang allerdings wurde kaum differenziert zwischen der philosophischen Raumdiskussion des Mittelalters und einer spezifisch literarischen Raumgenese. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll dieses Desiderat geschlossen werden durch eine konsequente Engführung von Erzählakt und literarischem Raum. Der zentrale methodische Zugriff erfolgt über den virtuellen Raum: Mit Erzählraum und erzähltem Raum erschafft der performative Akt des Erzählens grundsätzlich zwei virtuelle Räume, die nur für die Dauer ihrer Kommunikation und für die daran Beteiligten existent sind. Jede höfische Erzählung entfaltet ihre Räumlichkeit innerhalb dieser virtuellen Grunddisposition, was sich auch regelmäßig innerhalb der Erzählungen widerspiegelt. Das scheinbar moderne Konzept des virtuellen Raums kann so besonders in seinen Formen Erzählraum, musikalischer Raum und Erinnerungsraum historisiert und für eine Textinterpretation höfischer Epik im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert fruchtbar gemacht werden

    Zum ersten Mal wird in dieser Arbeit die narrative Bedeutung und Integration von Sprichwörtern der mündlichen wie der gelehrt schriftliterarischen Tradition in den höfischen Artus-, Gral- und Tristan-Romanen des hohen Mittelalters umfassend dargestellt. Sprichwörter spielen in den Romanen Wolframs von Eschenbach oder Hartmanns von Aue als ,Mikrotexte' eine wichtige Rolle: Sie ,bewerten' Handlungssequenzen, sind Träger der Didaxe und schaffen eine Brücke zwischen der fiktionalen Welt des Textes und der realen Welt der Rezipienten, indem sie das allgemein akzeptierte ,Weltwissen' des Publikums mit den erzählten Ereignissen spannungsreich verbinden. Die Arbeit diskutiert die Funktion von Sprichwörtern und Sentenzen im Mittelalter erstmals auf der Höhe der Diskussion, fasst die bisherige Forschung zusammen, schafft ein solides methodisches Fundament für die literaturwissenschaftliche Sprichwörterforschung und bietet Anschlussmöglichkeiten für die weitere Forschung

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Untersuchung steht das in der mittelalterlichen Literatur häufig anzutreffende Phänomen des Wilden, das dem Helden in ganz unterschiedlicher narrativer Ausgestaltung begegnen kann: So gehören neben wilden Tieren und wilder Natur auch die Wildleute des Mittelalters zu dem Motivkreis, der gemeinhin als das Andere der höfischen Kultur verstanden wird. Entgegen dieser einseitigen Lesart geht die Autorin an den Beispielen des Parzival, Busant und Wolfdietrich D den jeweiligen textuellen Repräsentationen des Wilden auf unterschiedlichen narrativen Ebenen nach und zeigt dabei, dass das Wilde keinesfalls nur als Gegenentwurf des in der Literatur inszenierten höfischen Selbstverständnisses in Erscheinung tritt. Vielmehr figurieren die vielfältigen Manifestationen des Wilden als anthropologische Konstante, was anhand kulturanthropologisch signifikanter Kategorien wie ,Kleidung', ,Essen'oder ,Sexualität' exemplarisch untersucht wird. Das Wilde - so die These - wird in den Texten unabhängig von ihrer jeweiligen Gattungszugehörigkeit als Konstituens des Menschseins inszeniert und tritt damit in ein komplexes Spannungsverhältnis mit den Eckpfeilern der höfischen Kultur. Dass die Differenzkategorien wilde/zam nicht absolut gesetzt sind, lässt sich darüber hinaus auch auf der poetologischen Ebene beobachten. Insbesondere der Parzival-Dichter Wolfram von Eschenbach erhebt wildekeit zum Erzählprinzip, dem die Studie anhand verschiedener Aspekte der Narration (z.B. Figurenkonzeption, Erzähltechnik und Metaphorik) nachgeht und so Strategien des "wilden Erzählens" herausarbeitet

Tracing different meanings and manifestations of liminality in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Orfeo, Sir Launfal, Thomas of Erceldoune and Robert Henryson's Orpheus and Eurydice, the volume offers a comprehensive theory of liminality rooted in structuralist anthropology and poststructuralist theory.     Medieval romances with their magic fountains, brave knights, and beautiful maidens have come to stand for the Middle Ages more generally. This close connection between the Medieval and the romance has had consequences for popular conceptions of the Middle Ages, an idealized fantasy of chivalry and hierarchy, and also for our understanding of romances, as always already archaic, part of a half-forgotten past. And yet, romances were one of the most influential and long-lasting innovations of the medieval period. To emphasize their novelty is to see the resources Medieval people had for thinking about their contemporary concern and controversies, whether social order, Jewish/ Christian relations, the Crusades, the connectivity of the Mediterranean, women's roles as mothers, and how to write a national past.
