    A groundbreaking account of translation and identity in the Chinese literary tradition before 1850-with important ramifications for todayDebates on the canon, multiculturalism, and world literature often take Eurocentrism as the target of their critique. But literature is a universe with many centers, and one of them is China. The Making of Barbarians offers an account of world literature in which China, as center, produces its own margins. Here Sinologist and comparatist Haun Saussy investigates the meanings of literary translation, adaptation, and appropriation on the boundaries of China long before it came into sustained contact with the West.When scholars talk about comparative literature in Asia, they tend to focus on translation between European languages and Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, as practiced since about 1900. In contrast, Saussy focuses on the period before 1850, when the translation of foreign works into Chinese was rare because Chinese literary tradition overshadowed those around it.The Making of Barbarians looks closely at literary works that were translated into Chinese from foreign languages or resulted from contact with alien peoples. The book explores why translation was such an undervalued practice in premodern China, and how this vast and prestigious culture dealt with those outside it before a new group of foreigners-Europeans-appeared on the horizon.

    "Dieser Sammelband geht zurück auf eine gleichnamige Sektion auf dem XXIII. Deutschen Romanistentag 2013 in Würzburg, die von den beiden Herausgebern dort organisiert wurde. Bei den hier publizierten Aufsätzen handelt es sich um ausgewählte Beiträge dieser Sektionsarbeit." (Kapitel 1.5) „Philologie und Grammatik" steht in der aktuellen Wissenschaftslandschaft für zwei entgegengesetzte wissenschaftliche Herangehensweisen: Während die eine versucht, (ältere) Texte auch unter Hinzuziehung außersprachlicher Informationen zu rekonstruieren, fokussiert die andere ihr Interesse auf die innere Struktur von Sprache und deren Entwicklung. Doch beide Welten kommen sich in der praktischen Arbeit näher, als man denkt: Wenn beispielsweise in der Editionsarbeit mit Hilfe der Grammatik über eine Konjektur entschieden wird, wenn bei der Analyse historischer Texte deutlich wird, wie stark diese von editorischen Grundentscheidungen abhängt, wenn historische Grammatikbeschreibungen ediert werden oder wenn in historischen Textkorpora grammatikalische Information durch Auszeichnung digital verarbeitbar gemacht werden soll. Philologie und Grammatik als Titel dieses Bandes steht für die spannungsreiche wie fruchtbare Begegnung zweier Welten, die exemplarisch auf dem Feld der Romanistik stattfand, die darüber hinaus aber auch das Interesse anderer Philologien und Sprachwissenschaften finden dürfte.

    This edited book focuses on the role of different types of pedagogical solutions in the acquisition of the Japanese grammatical system by reviewing, assessing and measuring current theory and research. Findings from this research have implications for the way Japanese grammar is learned and taught in a classroom context. The editors and contributors address a number of questions around the role of Japanese grammar learning and teaching such as: what is the role of instruction in Japanese second language acquisition? What are the main findings of empirical research into the acquisition of Japanese grammar? Is any one particular pedagogical intervention or solution to the teaching of Japanese grammar more effective than another? What pedagogical options do we have for the teaching of Japanese grammar? This book offers a unique insight into its practical implications for Japanese language learning and teaching for applied linguists, researchers, language teaching professionals and curriculum developers alike. Alessandro G. Benati is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Studies at the University of Greenwich, UK, and Director of the Centre for Applied Research and Outreach in Language Education (CAROLE). He holds a PhD in second language acquisition from the University of Greenwich and is internationally known for his research in second language learning and teaching, with special emphasis on processing instruction. Sayoko Yamashita is Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Jissen Women’s University, Japan. She holds an Ed.D, and specializes in applied linguistics, SLA, and pragmatics. Her publications include Six Measures in JSL Pragmatics, “Politeness in classrooms-comparison between JSL and EFL classrooms” in Selected Research Papers in Applied Linguistics, and “Investigating interlanguage pragmatics ability” in Investigating Pragmatics in Foreign Language Learning, Teaching and Testing - Introduction -- PART I: Theoretical Perspectives -- Chapter 1.     This edited book focuses on the role of different types of pedagogical solutions in the acquisition of the Japanese grammatical system by reviewing, assessing and measuring current theory and research. Findings from this research have implications for the way Japanese grammar is learned and taught in a classroom context. The editors and contributors address a number of questions around the role of Japanese grammar learning and teaching such as: what is the role of instruction in Japanese second language acquisition? What are the main findings of empirical research into the acquisition of Japanese grammar? Is any one particular pedagogical intervention or solution to the teaching of Japanese grammar more effective than another? What pedagogical options do we have for the teaching of Japanese grammar? This book offers a unique insight into its practical implications for Japanese language learning and teaching for applied linguists, researchers, language teaching professionals and curriculum developers alike. Alessandro G. Benati is Professor of Second Language Acquisition and Head of School of Languages and Area Studies at the University of Portsmouth. He is internationally known for his research in second language learning and teaching, with special emphases on input processing theory and the processing instruction model. He has a strong publications record with 12 established monographs, chapters and articles in international journals (Language Awareness, IRAL, Second Language Research and Language Teaching Research). Sayoko Yamashita is Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Jissen Women’s University, Japan. She holds an Ed.D, and specializes in applied linguistics, SLA, and pragmatics. Her publications include Six Measures in JSL Pragmatics, “Politeness in classrooms-comparison between JSL and EFL classrooms” in Selected Research Papers in Applied Linguistics, and “Investigating interlanguage pragmatics ability” in Investigating Pragmatics in Foreign Language Learning, Teaching and Testing.

    Reveals the troubling intimacy between Black women and the making of US global powerThe year 1968 marked both the height of the worldwide Black liberation struggle and a turning point for the global reach of American power, which was built on the counterinsurgency honed on Black and other oppressed populations at home. The next five decades saw the consolidation of the culture of the American empire through what Erica R. Edwards calls the “imperial grammars of blackness.”This is a story of state power at its most devious and most absurd, and, at the same time, a literary history of Black feminist radicalism at its most trenchant. Edwards reveals how the long war on terror, beginning with the late–Cold War campaign against organizations like the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and the Black Liberation Army, has relied on the labor and the fantasies of Black women to justify the imperial spread of capitalism. Black feminist writers not only understood that this would demand a shift in racial gendered power, but crafted ways of surviving it. The Other Side of Terror offers an interdisciplinary Black feminist analysis of militarism, security, policing, diversity, representation, intersectionality, and resistance, while discussing a wide array of literary and cultural texts, from the unpublished work of Black radical feminist June Jordan to the memoirs of Condoleezza Rice to the television series Scandal. With clear, moving prose, Edwards chronicles Black feminist organizing and writing on “the other side of terror”, which tracked changes in racial power, transformed African American literature and Black studies, and predicted the crises of our current era with unsettling accuracy.

    Luminous essays on translation and self-translation by the award-winning writer and literary translatorTranslating Myself and Others is a collection of candid and disarmingly personal essays by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri, who reflects on her emerging identity as a translator as well as a writer in two languages.With subtlety and emotional immediacy, Lahiri draws on Ovid's myth of Echo and Narcissus to explore the distinction between writing and translating, and provides a close reading of passages from Aristotle's Poetics to talk more broadly about writing, desire, and freedom. She traces the theme of translation in Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks and takes up the question of Italo Calvino's popularity as a translated author.     „Philologie und Grammatik" steht in der aktuellen Wissenschaftslandschaft für zwei entgegengesetzte wissenschaftliche Herangehensweisen: Während die eine versucht, (ältere) Texte auch unter Hinzuziehung außersprachlicher Informationen zu rekonstruieren, fokussiert die andere ihr Interesse auf die innere Struktur von Sprache und deren Entwicklung. Doch beide Welten kommen sich in der praktischen Arbeit näher, als man denkt: Wenn beispielsweise in der Editionsarbeit mit Hilfe der Grammatik über eine Konjektur entschieden wird, wenn bei der Analyse historischer Texte deutlich wird, wie stark diese von editorischen Grundentscheidungen abhängt, wenn historische Grammatikbeschreibungen ediert werden oder wenn in historischen Textkorpora grammatikalische Information durch Auszeichnung digital verarbeitbar gemacht werden soll. Philologie und Grammatik als Titel dieses Bandes steht für die spannungsreiche wie fruchtbare Begegnung zweier Welten, die exemplarisch auf dem Feld der Romanistik stattfand, die darüber hinaus aber auch das Interesse anderer Philologien und Sprachwissenschaften finden dürfte.
