    The current debates about the display of a crucifix in public buildings focus the larger discussions concerning the relationship between church and state. The political discussion seems to look at the cross as a symbol of the triumphal nature of Christianity, yet the traditions of both the NT and the OT suggest differently. With particular reference to the Fourth Servant Song (Isa 52) the symbolism of the cross refers to the admission of personal and collective guilt as well as to the hope God offers to the downtrodden. In the end it is a symbol of solidarity.

    Der Aufsatz erhebt und würdigt den Beitrag Joachim Jeremias’ zur Erforschung des antiken Judentums. Dafür werden Jeremias’ Monographien, Aufsätze und Wörterbuchartikel gesichtet, die häufig neben dem antiken Judentum auch der Palästinakunde, der historischen Jesusforschung oder dem frühen Christentum gewidmet sind, ferner seine einschlägigen Rezensionen judaistischer Literatur und verstreut zu findende methodische Bemerkungen zum Studium antiker jüdischer Texte. Berücksichtigt wird auch Jeremias’ organisatorisches Handeln mit Blick auf die Erforschung des antiken Judentums. Anhand eines Überblicks und ausgewählter Themen zeigt der Aufsatz Leistungen und Probleme der relevanten Arbeiten von Jeremias aus der Sicht gegenwärtiger Forschung zum antiken Judentum auf.

The literary adaptations of this story in the 20th century reduce this complexity and portray Samson as a more coherent other transferring Samson into the cultural boundaries of their own times. Thereby, Samson’s story is a continuous story of otherness. His portrait remains in between shame and honour, duty and emotion, patriotism and love and, subsequently, also between fool and hero.
