Why we must learn to tell new stories about our relationship with the earth if we are to avoid climate catastropheReading literature in a time of climate emergency can sometimes feel a bit like fiddling while Rome burns. Yet, at this turning point for the planet, scientists, policymakers, and activists have woken up to the power of stories in the fight against global warming. In Literature for a Changing Planet, Martin Puchner ranges across four thousand years of world literature to draw vital lessons about how we put ourselves on the path of climate change-and how we might change paths before it's too late.From the Epic of Gilgamesh and the West African Epic of Sunjata to the Communist Manifesto, Puchner reveals world literature in a new light-as an archive of environmental exploitation and a product of a way of life responsible for climate change. Literature depends on millennia of intensive agriculture, urbanization, and resource extraction, from the clay of ancient tablets to the silicon of e-readers. Yet literature also offers powerful ways to change attitudes toward the environment. Puchner uncovers the ecological thinking behind the idea of world literature since the early nineteenth century, proposes a new way of reading in a warming world, shows how literature can help us recognize our shared humanity, and discusses the possible futures of storytelling.If we are to avoid environmental disaster, we must learn to tell the story of humans as a species responsible for global warming. Zentral ist den Marx'schen Texten die Nähe von Trauma und Ökonomie; darin besteht ihre unerhörte Modernität. Zwar spricht auch Marx die Sprache der Metaphysik. Aber durch sie hindurch kündigt sich bei ihm eine Erfahrung an, die die ökonomische Ordnung als differentielles Gefüge von Texten entzifferbar macht. Es verlangt nach Begriffen, die ebenso »semiotisch« wie »grammatologisch« sind und nicht zuletzt mit einer »marxistischen Metaphysik« brechen. Heute treffen diese Begriffe auf das Diktat einer »globalisierten« Ökonomie, den Verfall des Politischen, auf Diskurse des Krieges, der Medien und der Psyche und nicht zuletzt auf die Bürokratien der Systemtheorie. Entscheidend sind jedoch nicht solche regionalen Verfassungen von Wissen, Technik und Macht. Entscheidend ist, wie sie hervorgebracht werden und welche »Arbeit der Differenz« sie praktisch dekonstruieren kann. Hier allerdings begegnen sich Marx, Heidegger und Derrida. Deren Rendezvous macht eine erneute Lektüre der Marx'schen Texte nötig - »hier« und »jetzt«, unter dem Diktat einer »Globalisierung« und nach dem Sturz staatlicher Systeme, die sich auf Marx beriefen. »Hauptanliegen des Werkes ist es, Marx' Text - singulär durch seine 'Dekonstruktion' der hegemonialen Sprache - einzubringen gegen die neoliberale Globalisierung. Die Dringlichkeit dieser Auseinandersetzung steht außer Zweifel, denn der Neoliberalismus 'lässt keine Zeit'. Das Verhältnis von Repräsentation und Alterität und das Problem des Raums in kolonialen und postkolonialen Zusammenhängen stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Studie. An der Schnittstelle von Ethnologie, Philosophie und Medienwissenschaft bestimmt Carena Brenner die Funktion der Ethnologie im Kontext dieser Politik des Räumlichen. Die Frage, wie raumübergreifende Bedeutungsproduktionen unter Bedingungen der Globalisierung ethnographisch erfasst und dargestellt werden können, arbeitet sie anhand einzelner Filme heraus. Die bisherige Historiographie zur afrikanischen Dekolonisation hat häufig entscheidende Süd-Süd-Beziehungen übersehen. Philmon Ghirmais Untersuchung nimmt daher antikoloniale Konferenzen und internationale Organisationen in den Blick, die in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren in Ghana und Ägypten stattgefunden haben bzw. dort ihren Sitz hatten. Anhand von breitem Archivmaterial aus afrikanischen - aber auch europäischen - Ländern zeichnet die Studie nach, wie afrikanische Politiker und Aktivisten aus Kolonien und bereits unabhängigen Ländern zusammentrafen, Verbindungen knüpften und gemeinsam Wege in die Unabhängigkeit sowie transnationale postkoloniale Ordnungsvorstellungen entwickelten. In the 1950s, Ghana and Egypt developed into centres of anti-colonial struggle. This volume describes the transnational networks which established themselves there, driving forward African decolonisation.

Are artists and cultural institutions cultural translators? Which part do concepts such as that of trans-culturality play? The contributions collected in this volume focus on the subject of (trans-)cultural translation and build a bridge between art and the cultural sector, the so-called "cultural turn" being just as relevant as the findings of the latest studies concerning the areas of activity in the cultural sector and management. Besides trans-cultural phenomena in fine arts, music, literature and theater, the authors explore current issues of cultural education at festivals, in museums, theaters, libraries, concert and opera halls. In conclusion, the focus is on processes of cultural exchange and (inter)national cultural managements that also require their players to develop modified thought patterns. Sind Künstler und Kultureinrichtungen kulturelle Übersetzer? Welche Rolle spielen Konzepte wie jenes der Transkulturalität? How is photography connected to global practices? This is a first edited collection to trace the relationship between history, photography and memory in a global perspective on three interrelated levels: firstly, in the artistic and cultural production of pictures, secondly, in the decoding of colonial and contemporary photography, and thirdly, in collecting photographs in picture archives dealing with colonial, anthropological and family photography. The contributions sketch the contested field of global photography and trace the manifold intertwinements between historical and contemporary photographs.

Aufgewachsen zwischen Schweizer Überfremdungsangst und diasporischer Nostalgie: »Inder_innen der zweiten Generation« verfügten als Kinder kaum über Narrative für ihre Erfahrung der Mehrfachzugehörigkeit. Rohit Jain zeichnet nach, wie diese »unmöglichen« Subjekte inmitten von assimilatorischem Rassismus und warenförmiger Anerkennung in der Schweiz sowie in den diasporischen Räumen eines liberalisierten Indiens neue Lebensentwürfe erfinden. Migrations- und Flüchtlingsdebatten machen den Bedarf an neuen Arbeiten zur Wirkweise ökonomischer und rechtlicher Macht in Raum und Zeit deutlich, sofern aktuelle weltpolitische Konstellationen auch vor der Schablone vergangener Geographien des Kapitalismus begriffen werden.Am Beispiel südasiatischer Auswanderergeschichten aus dem 20. Jahrhundert skizziert Raphael Schwegmann die kolonialen und postkolonialen Verflechtungen materiell-technischer und diskursiver Globalisierungen zwischen Europa und Asien. While the very existence of global literary studies as an institutionalised field is not yet fully established, the global turn in various disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences has been gaining traction in recent years. This book aims to contribute to the field of global literary studies with a more inclusive and decentralising approach. Specifically, it responds to a double demand: the need for expanding openness to other ways of seeing the global literary space by including multiple literary and cultural traditions and other interdisciplinary perspectives in the discussion, and the need for conceptual models and different case studies that will help develop a global approach in four key avenues of research: global translation flows and translation policies, the post-1989 novel as a global form, global literary environments, and a global perspective on film and cinema history. Gathering contributions from international scholars with expertise in various areas of research, the volume is structured around five target concepts: space, scale, time, connectivity, and agency. We also take gender and LGBTQ+ perspectives, as well as a digital approach.

Zentral ist den Marx'schen Texten die Nähe von Trauma und Ökonomie; darin besteht ihre unerhörte Modernität. Zwar spricht auch Marx die Sprache der Metaphysik. Aber durch sie hindurch kündigt sich bei ihm eine Erfahrung an, die die ökonomische Ordnung als differentielles Gefüge von Texten entzifferbar macht. Es verlangt nach Begriffen, die ebenso »semiotisch« wie »grammatologisch« sind und nicht zuletzt mit einer »marxistischen Metaphysik« brechen. Heute treffen diese Begriffe auf das Diktat einer »globalisierten« Ökonomie, den Verfall des Politischen, auf Diskurse des Krieges, der Medien und der Psyche und nicht zuletzt auf die Bürokratien der Systemtheorie. Entscheidend sind jedoch nicht solche regionalen Verfassungen von Wissen, Technik und Macht. Entscheidend ist, wie sie hervorgebracht werden und welche »Arbeit der Differenz« sie praktisch dekonstruieren kann. Hier allerdings begegnen sich Marx, Heidegger und Derrida. Deren Rendezvous macht eine erneute Lektüre der Marx'schen Texte nötig - »hier« und »jetzt«, unter dem Diktat einer »Globalisierung« und nach dem Sturz staatlicher Systeme, die sich auf Marx beriefen. »Hauptanliegen des Werkes ist es, Marx' Text - singulär durch seine 'Dekonstruktion' der hegemonialen Sprache - einzubringen gegen die neoliberale Globalisierung. Die Dringlichkeit dieser Auseinandersetzung steht außer Zweifel, denn der Neoliberalismus 'lässt keine Zeit'. Die vorliegende Untersuchung beruht auf der These, dass die Iberische Halbinsel des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts in entscheidendem Maße durch ihre verbindende Lage zwischen Mittelmeer und Atlantik geprägt ist. Vor dem Hintergrund der divergierenden Forschungstendenzen von atlantischen Globalisierungstheorien (Humboldt, Chaunu, Braudel, Gruzinski) und romanistischer Literaturwissenschaft (Spitzer, Auerbach, Curtius, Gumbrecht) leistet die vorliegende Untersuchung einen Beitrag zu einer neuen, ästhetischen und literarischen Globalisierungsgeschichte (Ette). Auf der Basis eines raumsemantisch entwickelten, ästhetischen Atlantikbegriffs werden kanonische Texte des spanischen Siglo de Oro wie Góngoras "Soledades", Tirso de Molinas "Burlador de Sevilla" oder "La celosa de sí misma", aber auch Cervantes "Celoso extremeño" und diverse Pikaroromane neu gelesen. Dabei entsteht nicht nur eine philologische Phänomenologie der ersten modernen Phase der Globalisierung. Die Verbindung von philologischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Paradigmen (Barthes, de Certeau, Ortega, Gabilondo, Gilroy) erweist sich auch als höchst produktiv. Das spanische Siglo de Oro gewinnt so eine neue ethische, ästhetische und theoretische Aktualität.

Dörfliche Idylle oder Trugbild?Ländliche Landschaften stellen die Ur-Topographie des Idyllischen dar, die Idylle selbst hat aber kaum eine Mimesis des realen Landlebens zum Ziel. A close look behind the scenes of the boardrooms: interpretations of the actions of managers (and logics related to space) versus the cultural-spatial »other« in the context of international corporate takeovers. Deutungen der Wirklichkeit stellen nicht nur ein Ergebnis soziokultureller Prägung dar, sondern geben zugleich Aufschluss über Dynamiken gesellschaftlicher Prozesse. Die basalen Deutungsmuster der Wirklichkeit weisen zudem Raumbezüge auf, die im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung von Unternehmensübernahmen (Mergers & Acquisitions, M&A) stehen. Denn auch unternehmerisches Handeln, das oftmals als »Black Box« erscheint, unterliegt gesellschaftlicher Prägung.Martin Schalljos objektiv-hermeneutische Rekonstruktion der Dynamik von Nähe- und Distanzproduktionen in länderübergreifenden M&A verspricht sowohl eine Vertiefung der theoretischen Perspektive auf Managerhandeln im globalen Kontext als auch wertvolle Erkenntnisse für eine praxisnahe Sichtweise auf transnationale Kooperationen und kulturelle Faktoren, die bei M&A zum Tragen kommen.

Biographical note: Alfred Nordheim (Prof. Dr. rer. nat.) lehrt Molekulare Zellbiologie an der Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte analysieren die genetische Regulation zellulärer Prozesse der normalen und pathologischen Organfunktion bei Säugetieren. Klaus Antoni (Prof. Dr. phil.) lehrt Japanologie an der Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Geistes- und Religionsgeschichte Japans, die Kulturtheorie sowie das Verhältnis von Religion und Ideologie im frühen und modernen Japan.
