In this paper, we study foreign ownership as a vehicle for transferring gender norms across international borders. Specifically, we analyze how the wage differential between men and women in Swedish firms is affected by the degree of gender inequality in the home country of foreign investors. The results suggest that gender norms of the home country matter-the gender wage gap in foreign-owned subsidiaries appears to increase with the degree of gender inequality prevailing in the investors' home market. This finding is identified from within job-spell variation in wages and proves robust across a series of specifications.

I examine how one central aspect of the family environment - sibling sex composition - affects women's gender conformity. Using Danish administrative data, I causally estimate the effect of having a second-born brother relative to a sister for first-born women. I show that women with a brother acquire more traditional gender roles, as measured through their choice of occupation and partner. This results in a stronger response to motherhood in labor market outcomes. As a relevant mechanism, I provide evidence of increased gender-specialized parenting in families with mixed-sex children. Finally, I find persistent effects to the next generation of girls.

Sustainable growth has emerged as a critical policy challenge worldwide. We investigate the influence of conventional gender norms on fertility and economic growth to explain the phenomena recently observed across high-income countries. To this end, we construct an overlapping generations model with endogenous fertility and labor supply, incorporating gender norms and R&D activities. We demonstrate that conventional gender norms can impede fertility and economic growth. Specifically, when gender norms are sufficiently conservative, income growth stagnates and population erosion eventually occurs. Conversely, when gender norms are sufficiently less conservative, the economy follows a sustained growth path characterized by simultaneous growth in both population and income per capita. Our results underscore the need to address and correct gender norms to achieve sustainable growth and improve welfare.

As the measurement of public opinion and attitudes toward gender issues has gained increasing attention in gender policy and research, the accurate design, implementation, and analysis of survey data has become paramount. In this paper, we examine the impact of the gender of the interviewer on survey responses in Latin America and the Caribbean, both individually and in the aggregate, using data from the LAPOP surveys (2012-2018). We also present a formal model that illustrates how the gender of the interviewer may influence responses and derive an optimal adjustment in survey design and analysis to account for this bias. Our findings highlight the substantial influence of social norms on gender opinions, revealing that respondents are more likely to overestimate men's abilities in politics relative to women's and to accept domestic violence when interviewed by men rather than women. Two key actions emerge as a corollary: survey firms should always provide the gender of the interviewer in their data, and researchers should adjust for this bias in their analysis. Without implementing these recommended practices, survey data may not accurately reflect what individuals in the region think about gender issues, potentially skewing behaviors and public policy.

I perform a narrow and wide replication of the labor force participation analyses in Bertand, Pan, and Kamenica (2015), which finds a negative relationship between realized and predicted female breadwinning and wives' labor force participation. Their results replicate in a narrow sense, even when samples from the same data sources cannot be perfectly reproduced. In the broader replication, I test whether the results are robust to two standard adjustments from labor economics: using hourly wages rather than annual earnings to estimate potential relative income, and using predicted rather than observed earnings or wages for husbands just as for wives. Both adjustments decrease the magnitude of the estimated negative relationship substantially. When combined, they yield a positive coefficient in a cross-sectional analysis, and a precise null when couple fixed effects are incorporated in a longitudinal analysis. This replication casts doubt on the conclusion that wives leave the labor force when they become likely to outearn their husbands.

Using the 41-year division of Germany as a natural experiment, we show that the GDR's gender-equal institutions created a culture that has undone the male breadwinner norm and its consequences. Since reunification, East Germany still differs from West Germany not only by a higher female contribution to household income, but also because East German women can earn more than their husbands without having to increase their number of housework hours, put their marriage at risk or withdraw from the labor market. By contrast, the norm of higher male income, and its consequences, are still prevalent in West Germany.
