The process of formation begins with the study of chaos, a constantly renewed allusion to divine creation. This topos of the beginning - the white paper, the stain of paint, the cold clay, or the open gap between buildings - has been a core element of discussing art since Pliny, and it found its continuation in art theory. Yet, if form is removed from a thing, the opposite comes into play. The material aesthetic debate regarding formlessness has always been subject to the condition that matter is formless in itself. This volume contains contributions by internationally renowned scholars and attempts to understand the creation and deduction of form, which both play an equally important role when a work of art unfolds its potency

Poetry, or poiēsis, has long been understood as a practice of making. But how are experiments in the making of poetic forms related to formal making in science and engineering? The Limits of Fabrication takes up this question in the context of recent developments in nanoscale materials science, investigating concepts and ideologies of form at stake in new approaches to material construction. Tracing the direct pertinence of fields crucial to the new materials science (nanotechnology, biotechnology, crystallography, and geodesic design) in the work of Shanxing Wang, Caroline Bergvall, Christian Bök, and Ronald Johnson back to the midcentury development of Charles Olson’s "objectist" poetics, Nathan Brown carves out a tradition of constructivist, nonorganic poetics that has developed in conversation with science and engineering. While proposing a new approach to the relation of technē (craft, skill) and poiēsis (making, forming), this book also intervenes in philosophical debates concerning the concept of the object, the distinction between organic and inorganic matter, theories of self-organization, and the relation between "design" and "nature." Engaging with Heidegger, Agamben, Whitehead, Stiegler, and Nancy, Brown shows that materials science and materialist poetics offer crucial resources for thinking through the direction of contemporary materialist philosophy

The chapters in this work respond to important questions about the formal properties of French literary texts and the agency of form. A central feature of twentieth- and twenty-first century French and Francophone writing has been the exploration of how cultural forms (literary, philosophical and visual) create distinctive semiotic environments and at the same time engage with external realities. The aim of this volume is to explore how the formal properties of a range of texts inflect our reading of them and, through that exploration, to renew the engagement with form that has been a key feature of French cultural production and of analysis in French studies.

Can one set of basic laws account for both the recurring themes and the infinite variety of nature's designs? When it comes to shape and form, does nature simply proceed in the easiest, most efficient way? Complete answers to these questions are likely never to be discovered. Still, down through the ages, the investigation of symmetry and regularity in nature has yielded some fascinating and surprising insights. Out of this inquiry comes a specific branch of mathematics - the calculus of variations - which explores questions of optimization: Is the igloo the optimal housing form for minimizing heat loss? Do bees use the least possible amount of wax when building their hives? In The Parsimonious Universe, Stefan Hildebrandt and Anthony Tromba invite readers to join the search for the mathematical underpinnings of natural shapes and form. Moving from ancient times to the nuclear age, the book looks at centuries of evidence that the physical world adheres to the principle of the economy of means - meaning that nature achieves efficiency by being rather stingy with the energy it expends. On almost every page can be found historical discussions, striking color illustrations, and examples ranging from atomic nuclei to soap bubbles to spirals and fractals. Without using technical language, Hildebrandt and Tromba open up an intriguing avenue of scientific inquiry to an uninitiated readership, showing what can be discovered when mathematics is used to investigate the natural world.

Damit gerät das Prekäre nicht allein der »kleinen« Genres, sondern die konstitutive Prekarität des Gattungskonzepts überhaupt in den Blick Whenever we speak of genres, we usually mean stable categories like opera, the novel or the Western. However from the unity and stability of genres, dangers grow out of two historical forces: on the one hand, cultural evolution can move past them and make them obsolete. On the other hand, academic classifications of aesthetic manifestations are not immutable. Since they focus on the marginal, peripheral and precarious, the essays in this collection throw new light on genres, their conceptualization and their evolution. With this, the precarious moves into view, not just the precarity of »minor« genres, but the precarity of the concept of genre as such
