Most of the classic DOE books were written before DOE software was generally available, so the technical level that they assumed was that of the engineer or scientist who had to write his or her own analysis software. In this practical introduction to DOE, guided by the capabilities of the common software packages, Paul Mathews presents the basic types and methods of designed experiments appropriate for engineers, scientists, quality engineers, and Six Sigma Black Belts and Master Black Belts. Although instructions in the use of MINITAB are detailed enough to provide effective guidance to a new MINITAB user, the book is still general enough to be very helpful to users of other DOE software packages. Every chapter contains many examples with detailed solutions including extensive output from MINITAB. Preview a sample chapter from this book along with the full table of contents by clicking here. This book focuses on repeated measures designs, and while other books on design of experiments typically only explain the computation involved in each design, this book provides comprehensive solutions to each repeated measures design (RMD) discussed beginning with the formation of research questions to step-by-step analysis using IBM SPSS to the interpretation of the findings. The author uniquely discusses how to conceptualize research problems as well as identify appropriate repeated measures designs for research purposes. Examples have been carefully chosen from a multitude of domains, including psychology, the social sciences, management, and sports science, to aid readers in understanding both the associated theories and methodologies. The book contains eight chapters, the first three of which deal with various fundamental concepts involved in the design of experiments, basic statistical designs, computational details, differentiating independent and repeated measures designs, testing assumptions, and the introduction of SPSS softwar. The remaining chapters address five important repeated measures designs that are frequently used by researchers, namely two-way repeated measures design, two-way mixed design, one-way repeated measures ANOVA, and mixed design with two-way MANOVA.. I present a novel experimental design to measure lying and mistrust as continuous variables on an individual level. My experiment is a sender-receiver game framed as an investment game. It features two players: firstly, an advisor with complete information (i.e., the sender) who is incentivized to lie about the true value of an optimal investment and, secondly, an investor with incomplete information (i.e., the receiver) who is incentivized to invest optimally and therefore must rely on the alleged optimum reported by the advisor. Due to its continuous message space, this experiment allows observing more differentiated behavior and therefore enables testing of more sophisticated theoretical predictions. I find that the senders lie by overstating the true value of the optimum to an average extent of about 148%, while the receivers suspect them to do so by only 56%. Moreover, my results indicate that the senders make strategic considerations about their potential to manipulate others when deciding about the sizes of their lies. However, I find that the size of the lie and the size of mistrust do not only matter from a strategic perspective but also have an impact on how people perceive their own behavior. Consistent with previous studies, my findings support the conjecture that lying costs increase with the size of the lie. Beyond that, I provide evidence for some endogenous preference for trust. Both players’ behaviors and beliefs are consistent over time. In addition, my classification of both players’ strategies is consistent with their self-assessment of their behavior within the experiment.

Behavioral biases often lead to suboptimal decisions, a vulnerability that extends to policymakers who operate under conditions of fatigue, stress, and time constraints and with significant implications for public welfare. While behavioral economics offers strategies like default adjustments to mitigate decision-making costs, deploying these policy interventions is not always feasible. Thus, enhancing the quality of policy decision-making is crucial, and evidence suggests that targeted training can boost job performance among policymakers. This study evaluates the impact of a behavioral training course on policy decision-making through a randomized experiment and a survey test that incorporates problem-solving and decision-making tasks among approximately 25,000 participants enrolled in the course. Our findings reveal a significant improvement in the treated group, with responses averaging 0.6 standard deviations better than those in the control group. Given the increasing prevalence of such courses, this paper underscores the potential of behavioral training in improving policy decisions and advocates for further research through additional experimental studies.

This book provides a protocol for conducting gauge repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) experiments. Such an experiment is required whenever a new test system is developed to monitor a manufacturing process. The protocol presented here is used to determine if the testing system is capable of monitoring the manufacturing process with the desired level of accuracy and precision. This protocol is not currently available in other books or technical reports. In addition to providing a protocol for testing a measurement system, the book presents an up-to-date summary of methods used to construct confidence intervals in normal-based random and mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) models. Thus, this comprehensive book will be useful to scientists in all fields of application who wish to construct interval estimates for ANOVA model parameters. It includes approaches that can be applied to any ANOVA model, and because it contains detailed examples of all computations, practitioners will be able to easily apply the methods. The book describes methods for constructing two types of confidence intervals: modified large-sample (MLS) and generalized confidence intervals. Computer codes written in SAS and Excel are provided to perform the computations. Appendices are included for readers who are unfamiliar with confidence intervals or lack a basic understanding of random and mixed ANOVA models
