    To what extent can music be employed to shape one culture's understanding of another? In the American imagination, Japan has represented the "most alien" nation for over 150 years. This perceived difference has inspired fantasies-of both desire and repulsion-through which Japanese culture has profoundly impacted the arts and industry of the U.S. While the influence of Japan on American and European painting, architecture, design, theater, and literature has been celebrated in numerous books and exhibitions, the role of music has been virtually ignored until now. 0W. Anthony Sheppard's Extreme Exoticism offers a detailed documentation and wide-ranging investigation of music's role in shaping American perceptions of the Japanese, the influence of Japanese music on American composers, and the place of Japanese Americans in American musical life. Presenting numerous American encounters with and representations of Japanese music and Japan, this book reveals how music functions in exotic representation across a variety of genres and media, and how0Japanese music has at various times served as a sign of modernist experimentation, a sounding board for defining American music, and a tool for reshaping conceptions of race and gender. From the Tin Pan Alley songs of the Russo-Japanese war period to Weezer's Pinkerton album, music has continued to inscribe Japan as the land of extreme exoticism

    In der deutschsprachigen Literatur wird Mexiko zur Projektionsfläche für europäische (Ur-)Sehnsüchte, Gedankenbilder und Gesellschaftsutopien. Die Projektion ist dabei dezidiert eurozentristischer Art: Traditionelle Konzepte der Weiblichkeit werden mit jenen einer kindlichen Unschuld und Reinheit gleichgesetzt und die Eroberung der mexikanischen Geliebten so gerechtfertigt. Caroline Kodym untersucht das gemeinsame Muster der Projektionen als europäische Ursehnsucht nach dem verlorenen Paradies. Sie zeigt auf, dass sich aus dem ursprünglichen Mythos das Wunschbild einer natürlichen Gesellschaftsordnung und eines ursprünglichen, exotischen Naturraums entwickelt, der auch Raum für politische Wunschbilder und Abenteuer bietet

    Die Imaginationsmaschine des Kinos wird in der Moderne zu einem mächtigen Agenten der Repräsentation des Anderen. Populärkulturelle Motive mit garantiert hohem Schauwert bestimmen besonders publikumsträchtige Abenteuerfilme wie »Die Spinnen« von Fritz Lang oder »Das indische Grabmal« von Joe May. Als Weltgenerierungs- und Zeitmaschine erscheint das Kino als Mythendistribuent par excellence und verbreitet unter den Bedingungen einer als entzaubert apostrophierten Moderne massenwirksame Verzauberungen und Remythisierungen. Das Unbekannte, Fremde, Andere wirkt in der industriellen Moderne gleichsam an die Ränder der Welt zurückgedrängt, verschwunden ist es damit jedoch nicht. In einer kleinen Medien- und Kulturgeschichte des Anderen im Weimarer Kino wird anhand beispielhaft analysierter Filme verschiedener Genres den populären historischen Verarbeitungsmustern nachgegangen, in denen in dieser Zeit Rätselhaftes, Differentes und Heterogenes verhandelt wird

    In der deutschsprachigen Literatur wird Mexiko zur Projektionsfläche für europäische (Ur-)Sehnsüchte, Gedankenbilder und Gesellschaftsutopien. Die Projektion ist dabei dezidiert eurozentristischer Art: Traditionelle Konzepte der Weiblichkeit werden mit jenen einer kindlichen Unschuld und Reinheit gleichgesetzt und die Eroberung der mexikanischen Geliebten so gerechtfertigt. Caroline Kodym untersucht das gemeinsame Muster der Projektionen als europäische Ursehnsucht nach dem verlorenen Paradies. Sie zeigt auf, dass sich aus dem ursprünglichen Mythos das Wunschbild einer natürlichen Gesellschaftsordnung und eines ursprünglichen, exotischen Naturraums entwickelt, der auch Raum für politische Wunschbilder und Abenteuer bietet.
