    Explores expressionlessness, inscrutability, and emotional withholding in Black cultural productionArguing that inexpression as a gesture that acquires distinctive meanings in concert with blackness, Deadpan tracks instances and meanings of deadpan—a vaudeville term meaning “dead face”—across literature, theater, visual and performance art, and the performance of self in everyday life.Tina Post reveals that the performance of purposeful withholding is a critical tool in the work of black culture makers, intervening in the persistent framing of African American aesthetics as colorful, loud, humorous, and excessive. Beginning with the expressionless faces of mid-twentieth-century documentary photography and proceeding to early twenty-first-century drama, this project examines performances of blackness’s deadpan aesthetic within and beyond black embodiments, including Young Jean Lee’s The Shipment and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s Neighbors, as well as Buster Keaton’s signature character and Steve McQueen’s restitution of the former’s legacy within the continuum of Black cultural production. Through this varied archive, Post reveals how deadpan aesthetics function in and between opacity and fugitivity, minimalism and saturation, excess and insensibility

    Der moderne Industrie- und Finanzkapitalismus stellt für audiovisuelle Medien einen widerspenstigen Gegenstand dar: Da an sich immateriell und »unsichtbar«, müssen Filme in der Beschäftigung mit dem Kapitalismus narrative und ästhetische, mithin mediale Verfahren entwickeln, um das Thema für ihr Publikum sichtbar und damit wahrnehmbar werden zu lassen. In Anlehnung an Michel Foucault und Gilles Deleuze setzt sich Felix T. Gregor mit kapitalistischen Dispositiven wie Körpern und Subjekten, Raum und Zeit, Macht und Durchdringung sowie Krise und Exzess auseinander. Ihre filmische Sichtbarmachung führt so zu einer Sichtbarkeit des Kapitalismus, die das Potenzial einer ästhetischen Kritik besitzt.

    This paper engages with Herman Melville's short story Bartleby the Scrivener, as well as contemporary discussions thereof, so as to consider a peculiar concept of excess suggested to us by its main character. Our discussion focuses upon three of the most prominent contemporary Bartlebys: 'The Politicized Bartleby' of Slavoj Zizek, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri; 'The Originary Bartleby' of Gilles Deleuze; and 'The Whatever Bartleby' of Giorgio Agamben. On the basis of these interpretations we derive a concept of excess as the residual surplus of any categorical interpretation, the yet to be accounted for, the not yet explained, the un-interpretable, the indeterminate, the always yet to arrive, precisely that which cannot be captured, held onto nor put in place. This particular discussion of Bartleby is connected to a more general discussion of a management and organization studies that has become increasingly reliant upon literary texts. On this topic, we pass a not altogether optimistic commentary, itself informed by the excessive demand of adequately interpreting Bartleby.
